Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
by JaredFromLondon on May 28, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with them not issuing the Amber Alert because it didn’t meet the requirements, there’s a reason why there are strict requirements for issuing it because authorizes are worried that a cry-wolf syndrome would develop and people would chose to ignore it like they do car alarms. There’s a petition that wants the Amber Alert issued immediately anytime after a child under 16 is missing… that would mean you’ll get like 6 Amber Alerts a day in a place as large and dense as the GTA.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
they issued a bill in the Legislative yesterday to remedy those requirements…based on that petition…I think it was presented….not sure if it got much steam

by blindfolded tank driver on May 28, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Errr
They can’t change it, there’s a copyright issue because Amber Alert is copyrighted in the United States and it’s being used in Canada with the copyright holder’s permission (which I believe is the US government), so they will either have to get permission from the American government or rename it to something else
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
I’m no lawyer, but copyright laws are a wacky game, especially across borders, and Canada is well known for poor laws about its abuse.
I’m sure the bill asked for changes in procedures on how the police determine when to issue it. I have no idea if they can pass it or will, it’s likely a MPP make nice nice with the people of their riding and trying to look go in the media. It likely goes nowhere anyhow

No, the bill asks to change the requirements for issuing an Amber Alert.
Anyway I don’t support changing it from its current form to what they want right now, seems to be an emotional knee-jerk response to a tragic case if you ask me. Also, there are already questions and doubts as to the real effectiveness of the Amber Alert.

Here's another
THREE TO TANGO
The original VHS jacket of this movie (about a guy who pretends to be gay) says: “Oscar Novak will finally come out of the closet and declare that he is, well, straight.” The Czech jacket (when translated back to English) says: “Oscar Novak will finally leave the toilet and declare that he is good and straightforward.”

The one about the movies was some girl who does it for a living but is a native English speaker commenting on how badly some of the others were translated. The one about warm and gay was just from a discussion in a newspaper about commonly mistranslated words. I agree though. I don’t see how someone could confuse them but then again I tend to underestimate the stupidity of the general population.
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
something else interesting
the person speaking (the player) and the individual who translated are not robots. I think they understand the difference between “warm” and ‘homosexual." If not, well then I’ll stand corrected.
That, and why would an NHL team be asking a player if he was “warm”

I don’t see why the NHL thinks that people want to watch afternoon games or why they’re playing on back to back nights in a Cup Final when players are already badly beaten and bruised and could benefit from a break between games. Hopefully Saturday’s game doesn’t go into a long OT.

Its not that the NHL thinks people want them, its so they can fit into NBC’s schedule so as to not piss them off. Not sure why we cater to a network that could give two flying craps about us but we do.

The Cougars relocated there from Victoria. :( Of course, they were absofriggingly godawful for a few years before that. I think they still have the record for least points in a WHL season.

Interestingly enough, the original Victoria Cougars that won the cup in 1925 eventually became the nucleus for the detroit red wings.

I’ll never bandwagon with Rangers. I hate them. And I hate Lundqvist. More than any other hockey player
Небо № 7
Most excellent. Sometimes I wish he played for a team other than the rangers so I could be a fan of his.

She made a movie called Southland Tales in 2006.
Southland Tales grossed USD $275,380 in limited release at the North American box office, and $81,028 elsewhere, making a worldwide total of $356,408,38 falling far short of the film’s $15–17 million budget. It should be noted that this was with the film playing on only 63 screens (a standard art house release is 300 screens).

It wasn’t marketed right. Alot of people who hadn’t seen it thought it was some kind of religious Armageddon show.
