by JaredFromLondon on May 28, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with them not issuing the Amber Alert because it didn’t meet the requirements, there’s a reason why there are strict requirements for issuing it because authorizes are worried that a cry-wolf syndrome would develop and people would chose to ignore it like they do car alarms. There’s a petition that wants the Amber Alert issued immediately anytime after a child under 16 is missing… that would mean you’ll get like 6 Amber Alerts a day in a place as large and dense as the GTA.

Errr

They can’t change it, there’s a copyright issue because Amber Alert is copyrighted in the United States and it’s being used in Canada with the copyright holder’s permission (which I believe is the US government), so they will either have to get permission from the American government or rename it to something else

No, the bill asks to change the requirements for issuing an Amber Alert.

Anyway I don’t support changing it from its current form to what they want right now, seems to be an emotional knee-jerk response to a tragic case if you ask me. Also, there are already questions and doubts as to the real effectiveness of the Amber Alert.

The one about the movies was some girl who does it for a living but is a native English speaker commenting on how badly some of the others were translated. The one about warm and gay was just from a discussion in a newspaper about commonly mistranslated words. I agree though. I don’t see how someone could confuse them but then again I tend to underestimate the stupidity of the general population.

the person speaking (the player) and the individual who translated are not robots. I think they understand the difference between “warm” and ‘homosexual." If not, well then I’ll stand corrected.
