Burke has also said he wanted to leave himself wiggle room for when the cap goes down next year. Which Burke do we believe?

wiggle room doesn’t mean he’s not spending to the cap…he’ll limit term, like a GM should. 2010-11 you also might see a lot of high salary players on the Marlies…

who do you have in mind?

All the players I hate are gone (Raycrap, Moore and McCabe) so there’s nobody I’d really like to see punished by being sent to the Marlies.

it’s only punishment if they suck. Why should the big team swallow guys pulling in big salaries if they aren’t performing.
Personally I have no hate for Moore when he was here playing, the contract thing was dickish, but we all know Burke wasn’t resigning him anyway.
Beauchemin would be a good one too…likely overpriced.

My hate for Moore is personal. Went to high school with the guy and he was a conceited jerk.

well, that makes sense. I’d hate him too if he was a dick to me personally too.

I’d like Bouwmeester, because I think that likely Kabby will be gone and he fills that gap. And it’s not because I think the twins are terrible. If we got stuck with them, they’d anchor our 2nd line for years.

The twins, both point per game players, would anchor our SECOND line?
Did I miss the memo on the new first line we got? Because last season it consisted largely of Matt Stajan (who is shit), Poni, and Antropov.

Also the first line last season wasn’t near good enough.

The first line last season was a second line masquerading as a first line.
The Sedins would make the Leafs much, much better offensive team, and a much better team in general.
This team can’t keep the puck out of their own net. I don’t see them trading Kaberle or Kubina this summer. Just my gut feeling. Might as well add two dynamic offensive players who can keep the play out of our end as much as possible. Putting a guy like Hagman with the Sedins scratches me right where I itch. That’s a first line. Hell, even Blake.
Grabbo can centre your second line with Blake and Poni. Third line of Mitchell, Stempniak and Stajan on the wing. Fourth line of Mayers, May (if he stays), and, well, I don’t know, whomever. And this leaves no spot for Tlusty, who I think is ready to make the jump.
If Kabby or Kubina are moved this summer, make a play for Bouw.
Otherwise, unload salaries of Kabby and Kubina next summer, and get ready to throw a Brinks truck at Rick Nash.

that’s where my interest in the twins lags, is the potential for guys like Nash. Sure, the Sedins instantly give the Leafs a proper top line, but does it prevent us from chasing a guy like Nash. If not, then game on, sir, let’s have us a twin parade and helping of Nash dessert.

Rick Nash’s point totals for his four seasons:
54, 57, 69, 79
Daniel Sedin:
34, 32, 31, 54, lockout, 71, 84, 74, 82
Henrik Sedin:
29, 36, 39, 42, lockout, 75, 81, 76, 82

exactly…he has lacked a true playmaker setting him up…at least the twins play well with each other. They are very good, but Nash can be great

The Sedins were 14th and 15th in NHL scoring. They outscore their opposition, they play tough minutes, they make guys like Anson Carter 30 goal scorers. If the Leafs’ sign them it’s because the Canucks are idiots.
And no way Nash is allowed to get to UFA status by Columbus so he’d have to come as part of a trade.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
that’s another thing, I agree that both the Canucks and the Jackets are fools if they let the Twins and Nash go…I’ll be stunned if Florida lets Bouwmeester go without a fight, but of all of them, he is the most likely to move.

It all comes down to the player wanting to stay. People say that Nash wants to stay, and he loves the city, and he very well might, but mos players arnt going to say they willingly want to go to another team. Columbus could throw the world at him and he might not take it because he wants to play somewhere else, for a contender or a favourite.

Burke tells the Star he’s spending to the Cap. Well, that isn’t going to be too hard.
He’s already got $40M committed and needs to sign at least five forwards, give Grabbo a raise, and land a back-up goalie. That’s an average of $1.8M per position.
I bet he rounds out the lineup with the likes of Todd Marchant, Travis Moen and Brett Hedican on smallish two year deals.
