Islanders VP on the Cost of Moving Up at the Draft

Chris Botta (Isles VP): Any way the Islanders keep the first overall pick and also acquire the second or third overall picks?

Keyser: Anything is possible, I guess. If I’m Tampa Bay, I’m setting my minimum price at Josh Bailey, the 26th pick and the Islanders’ first round pick in 2010. And I don’t think that’s even enough to get a deal done because of the uncertainty of where the 2010 first pick could be. If the Islanders have a decent season and that pick next summer is, say, 8 or higher, the other team has made a bad deal. The Islanders would get the best player in the trade, easily. Tough to see a deal like that coming together.

So three first round draft picks. That’s a hefty price to pay.

And that’s just to move from 2 to 1. Safe to say we’re not getting the Isles’ pick.

You got that backwards. They were guessing what it would take for the Islanders to acquire Tampa’s #2 pick while keeping their #1.

Luke Schenn essentially cost Toronto two first round picks. By that comparison, I would say that having both Hedman and Tavares is definitely worth that.

Luke Schenn cost us a first, a second and a third.

Uh, I’d trade Josh Bailey and my first for the 2nd overall pick in a heartbeat.

Josh Bailey will be a great third liner shut down player.

Especially when you know that the 2nd overall pick is either Tavares or Hedman.

…and next year’s first which is also likely a top five pick.

And that’s a starting point…

Well Josh Bailey sucks, and if all it takes to turn Josh Bailey into Victor Hedman is next year’s first I think you pull that trigger.

The only way that could backfire is if the Islanders win the draft lottery and miss out on Taylor Hall.

This sounds about right. A high first, a good prospect, and next year’s first.

Wouldn’t be far off from the Leafs dealing next year’s first, a second, and a good prospect if we had such a thing… while keeping out #7 pick.

He’s probably right that it’s not enough.
