Yesterday saw a lot of news about the Kontinental Hockey League hitting the wire. The league's draft saw three Leafs get drafted including Jiri Tlusty and Mikhail Stefanovich. Mirtle also noted that the league has a couple of teams in financial trouble including Khimik.
This card (back here) is a teaser for a post I hope to write soon. I was at the Jays game on Saturday and in between watching Alex Rios tease Jays fans with a 4-for-4 day I found a vending machine that sells old packs of cards for $0.50 - $1. I was transported to my youth and grabbed a bunch of packs. This one is from OPC's 91-92 collection.

Financial trouble? Move ’em to Hamilton!
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
The entire KHL moving to Hamilton would be awesome.

And yes, that rip is because the gum that comes in the pack got stuck to the card. Also, almost 20 year old gum? Not tasty at all.

Why didn’t you buy me a pack of old cards with gum in them? :(

I’ll get some the next time I go see the Jays. You can pick them up the next time you come to Toronto.

Seriously, it disintegrated. I’ll mail you some with some other stuff I got at a Leafs game this year.

Reason #253 it stinks to live where hockey isn't king
I found a vending machine that sells old packs of cards for $0.50 – $1.
I’m near speechless. What a beautiful thing. Are your streets paved in gold, too? Tell me more.

heh
The best part is that it was a vending machine selling baseball cards in a baseball stadium and it still had hockey cards in it. I probably bought more than I would have because I’d had some wobbly pops but I am definitely hitting it up next time I go.

I’m assuming said machine is at the SkyDome – care to share where, precisely?

I forget where exactly but it’s down the third base line near the fence (managed to see Hill’s homer just as it cleared the fence) right by an ATM.

What exactly is the implication of being drafted by the KHL – I assume they can’t kidnap Tlusty (for example) and make him play in Russia, so does drafting him mean that the team that picked him has his KHL rights, if and when he chooses to join that league?

While I wouldn’t put kidnapping entirely past the KHL it does essentially mean what you said. If Tlusty gives up on playing in the best league in the world (or the AHL) then that team has his rights.

Tlusty wakes up groggy, his feet are bound; he’s in a dank, musty room.
A note on his chest reads:
Congratulations. You have defected to Vityaz.

Please don’t give loser domi any more Tlusty slash-fic ideas.
