The Draft Board: Victor Hedman
In preparation for the NHL Draft, we're going to run down the top 15 players as ranked by the ISS and have our users vote for how good they think each player is to help us prepare our draft board. Since PPP doesn't write features for the site anymore I'm going back to back to bring you draft coverage. Up next the ISS #3, Victor Hedman.
6'6" and 225lbs at the age of 18, Victor Hedman is, to quote fellow Swede Borje Salming, a "big fellow". Roughly the size of Chris Pronger, Victor Hedman doesn't have a mean elbow or skate blade in his body. He's a silky skating goal scoring shutdown defenseman in the mold of Niklas Lidstrom, and that's why Hedman could go #1 overall if the Islanders decide against Tavares.
Hedman's been spending his time playing for MODO of the SEL which is a professional league for adults, not a junior league. In two seasons in the Elitserien Hedman has the following stat line:
| GP | G | A | Pts | +/- | PIM |
| 82 | 9 | 16 | 25 | 23 | 96 |
Not too shabby at all. He did however have a poor showing at the WJHC where it was rumored he was playing with a shoulder injury:
All the advance billing given to the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder put expectations in the stratosphere -- and try as he might, not even Hedman could reach them. In six games for Sweden, Hedman was a plus-4, but had just 2 assists and three minor penalties. He also was booed unmercifully by the Canadian crowd every time he touched the puck in the gold-medal game after throwing a punch at Team Canada forward Angelo Esposito.
So PPPers how good do you think Victor Hedman is? Weigh in on our poll and then defend yourselves in the comments.

I’ll boldly say he’ll be an all star…solely based on the fact that if Komisarek got into one, than this guy is going to be in several…if you meant end of season first and second team All Star, then I’m screwed. He might blossom into that, and definitely be at least a #3

If at his peak Hedman is only a #3 d-man I think you’d have to say picking him 2nd overall was a bad choice.

I remember when Pronger was acquired at his draft,by Burke and company….the quote by one well respected scout was"they just traded the next Larry Robinson".If Hedman wants to aspire to being the next whoever,Robinson isn’t all that bad a choice. It all depends on who drafts him.He will be ruined in Long Island and possibly the same fate awaits in Tampa or Atlanta.Colorado may be in the market to trade up one spot if the Isles take Tavares first.

i'm saying All-Star
as he’s certainly got the skills to compete and I don’t think that whoever drafts him will be disapointed. He’s a sure fire lock to be dressing for an NHL club come October.
That said, as you’ve pointed out Chemmy, he bears a lot of resemblance to Pronger, perhaps Chara as well. He’s a big body who can skate and put up points, but he’s not “generational” given we’re seeing players of his ilk in the league already/still.

i dunno, don’t watch any SEL to say one way or the other.
What i do know is that when he was on the ice at the juniors, you knew he was there, and it wasn’t only because he was blocking out the sun. He hit hard, and some players adjusted their game to a more east west approach rather than barreling in on net when he was out there.
he changed the game, but again, he’s not the first d-man in the league to do that, and he won’t be the last. He’ll be great for sure, but a d-man has to be something more than great to be a “generational” talent.

by blurr1974 on Jun 2, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
indeed
perhaps he could become a generational talent, but it’s way too difficult to pinpoint that in a defenseman, let alone before he’s even played one NHL game. If he is as smart as they say, and can think the game like Lidstrom, then yes, generational. But even aside from that, he seems to be a top pairing defenseman to start with.

I said Generational
I only saw him a bit but he skates amazingly well. Period. Not for a big guy but for any guy. I can see that he was injured during the WJHC and I am not that worried about his lack of mean streak since Lidstrom is neither big nor mean but is still top 5 defenceman of all time.
I love the skill set.

he seemed a little whiney to me at the WJC……. which is neither here nor there on his talent level, but an observation.

I think his WJHC showing was definitely not optimal and that might push him down to 2nd or even 3rd given how well Matt Duchene’s been playing.
Keep in mind though, Tavares and Duchene play against teenagers. Hedman plays against grown men in Sweden’s top pro league.

I’ll be awaiting more of these commercials. G-Spots if you will. And this time, I won’t be lying when I say I’ve seen a particular G-spot.

copying Ron McLean…
G now sponsors Don Cherry’s segment, and the first one they sponsored Ron concluded with a statement about their “G spot”

Admission time: I haven’t watched a minute of the Stanley Cup finals except for the second period of Game One. I haven’t been a very good hockey fan lately.

I went with first line pairing. Mostly because whichever team gets him (Isles/Lightning) will most likely ruin the first 3-4 years of his career.
At least until someone else buys the team and moves them/fixes management.

I would say more Lightning than Islanders. At least the management of the Isles are stable (Gordon as coach, Snow as GM), even if ownership has its problems.

i think ownership has sorted out it’s own problems by realizing it can run the team by committee. it’s main issue now is in regards to it’s stadium and cash flow problems.
Charles Wang may be a special kind of crazy, but that guy is committed to keeping that team afloat.

no. one can only lose millions after millions of dollars before the process gets stale i imagine.
the ball is in Nassau county’s court though. He’s got every right to be asking for a new stadium. The horror stories you read about that place…

I don’t think Wang even wants money from the city/town/whatever, he just wants them to re-zone some land that he’ll buy so he can put down a new arena, shopping mall, office space and apartments.

wow...
really?
if that’s the case then he’s better than most owners. heaven forbid you let the guy develop an area…

Yeah
The main problem appears to be the environmental impact and the fact that the Town of Hampstead has a lazy person in charge (Kate Murray) of the project.
Wang doesn’t want any money he just wants permission to get going on a 10 year infrastructure project.

Yes, Bergman is Toronto’s main European scout. Do you know who else he likes or mentioned? Does Borje Salming promise underwear to all Swedish prospects drafted/signed by Toronto?
