The vote has been counted. I’m just having fun with this because there’s no way it happens. Either that or Peter Chiarelli is some kind of voodoo mastermind. Still, what happens with the cap is like a train wreck in the middle of an airport and everything is an oil tanker.

Why?

Basically handing over your two biggest chips. If it was Kaberle for him sure, but you can’t send both.
Disappointed since 1984
Plus, what happens if you can’t get Kessel signed? Then you’ve given away your best D-man and a high pick in a loaded draft for pretty much nothing.. No, no, nothing about this deal adds up…

good point
but let’s remember this is just the initial offer.
What way can Burke take it to make it more palatable?

As people have been saying, take the 7th pick off the table. Or insist on another piece from Boston, though right now I can’t think of who or what that could be that Boston would also consider giving up

I was watching the All Access draft specials last night
and they had Kessel’s draft day, and they followed him around.
He seemed like a goofy kid with some spirit. Not any false humility, but not high on himself. He knew what his strengths were.
When kids were asked how they saw themselves, every forward said “solid two way player.” Kessel said he’s a sniper and he’ll light the lamp for you. Nothing wrong with telling the truth.

The 7th overall pick.
Kabs for Kessel straight-up? I’d do it. But to throw in the pick? That’s like Kabs and Cowan for Kessel and that seems way too much for an RFA.

Don’t trade within the division. Ever.
I know we’ve established Burke isn’t afraid to make little moves, but this is not little at all.
Also, I ♥ Kessel, but I wouldn’t pay this much for him, not without a few more pieces coming back. Maybe take the Bruins first rounder and Bitz or Wheeler

Kessel? Lets see...
…0.5 points per game over three years, most of them coming last year when Boston was the best team in the East. You would have to be a complete friggen idiot to make this deal.
Drop the draft pick and it’s an OK deal.
The Lesson of Jason Blake
In Jason Blake’s contract year, his shooting percentage went up by half. Here’s a short history of Blake’s year by year shooting percentage:
2003-04 9.2%
2004-05 9.1%
2005-06 9.9%
2006-07 13.1%
Spot the outlier.
After signing his boffo deal, he shot a paltry 4.5% in 2007-08. Last season, in a partial return to form, the Albino Assassin’s shooting percentage returned to the norm at 8.3%
Let’s have a look at Kessel’s shooting percentage. In his three seasons in the NHL he put up 6.5%, 8.9% and a whopping 15.5%
Spot the outlier.
I don’t think Kessel’s shooting percentage is sustainable, does anyone else? The team that acquires him is likely to double his salary and see his goal production drop.
That’s just one more reason I wouldn’t do this deal.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
Thanks mf. As usual, excellent work.
And as I said in the CC, this deal as proposed is not happening, even if that means I have to kill everyone on earth to ensure it doesn’t.

Wamsley (from EOTP) made a good point about getting him signed first because what if the Leafs trade for Kessel and a team gives him an offer sheet that sets the market for him?
I guess you could take the picks but if you have your heart set on Kessel you should have it set before hand.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Cox is actually saying the LEafs would get Kessel and a pick. I’d be fine with that return. Sure, his % was high, but that was a goal every two games at age 21.
If he reverts to his norm and his shooting percentage drops by 5% Kessel is a 20 to 25 goal man.
That’s amazing for a 21 year old, but it’s not worth $4.5M/year.
