Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Rumour: Tomas Kaberle to Dallas for Matt Niskanen and the 8th overall pick.

More on Niskanen here. Here is a write-up from Defending Big D:
Matt Niskanen: 43 games; 4G, 12A, 16 Pts; minus 12 rating. Matt Niskanen is perhaps one of the most frustrating players in the NHL to watch. At times it seems he knows exactly whats going to happen and heads off a play before it had time to develop; other times he’s completely lost and chasing the puck. He lacks the confidence at times to step in and play the body, instead opting to take swipes at the puck as the skater speeds by. Showed promise last season but it’s become apparent that he was playing over his head and was being covered up by the veterans on his team. Grade: D-

higher pick...

but Niskanen has a lower ceiling than Kessel.

Still, package the 7th and 8th and Kubina for 4th from ATL, or dare to dream, 3rd or 2nd overall

I think 7th, 8th, and Kubina is too much for #4. For #2 however…

If Burke can get into the Top 3

he better take Duchene. He won’t, he’ll take Hedman, I know, but I think I’d rather have Duchene…

Well,, I’d rather have Tavares. Still, I’m getting all worked up over nothing…

If the leafs have a hope of contending without years of crappy seasons and high draft picks, they need to be able to take a kid like this and develop him. Pull the trigger.

7, 8 and Kubina I would say is overpaying for #2 even. That’s basically Cowen, MPS and a cup-winning vet for uh.. hedman? duchene? tavares? no thanks.

8 looks fantastic to me actually (kulikov, oel). Niskanen is still young though (21/22 I believe), and he’s not bad, per se. Plus, he’s also signed for next season, whereas Kessel is not, and is looking at upwards of 3.5/4 mil at least.

I think it would be worth dealing the 7 or 8th pick in a package to move up to 4th or 5th. Maybe because I want the Leafs to have two Schenns. Maybe.

he could be the next Cam Neely/Wendel Clark. True power forward type.

Or, he could be the next Brad Isbister…

If either of the first three picks are truly “generational talents” and could be franchise players then any deal to get them would be worth it.

Ask yourself what you you trade for Malkin or Crosby or Ovetchkin or Lecavallier?
Two first rounders plus an overpaid but serviceable veteran defender seems cheap to me.
