Is That The Kid You Want?
- 1st pick and 7th overall - your new Maple Leaf, Nazem Kadri! Toronto Sports Media, Torontoist, Toronto Mike and NHL.com all welcome the new hope to the ACC.
- But what does it all mean? Where's the meat? Leafs-centric draft analysis comes from Down Goes Brown, Maple Leaf Hot Stove, TSM and the ever adroit mf37.
- Strange to think, I know - but there were other teams drafting yesterday too. Here in order then, is what's being said (mostly) around the SBNation about the top 30 *deep breath* - Islanders (Tavares), Lightning (Hedman), Avalanche (Duchene), Thrashers (Kane), Kings (Schenn), Coyotes (Ekman-Larsson), Stars (Glennie), senators (Cowen), Oilers (Pääjärvi-Svensson), Predators (Ellis), Islanders (de Haan), Sabres (Kassian), Panthers (Kulikov), Ducks (Holland), Wild (Leddy), Blues (Rundblad), Canadiens (Leblanc), Rangers (Kreider), Devils (Josefson), Blue Jackets (Moore), Canucks (Schroeder), Flames (Erixon), Capitals (Johansson), Bruins (Caron), Ducks (Palmieri), Hurricanes (Paradis), Blackhawks (Olsen), Lightning (Ashton) and the Penguins (Despres).
- Essentially, the world's gone Sweden mad. The Fanhouse reports of the rise of the Three Crowns. Not that Sleza is too happy about the whole thing.
- The wires were aflame yesterday with rumours of trades abounding and then turning to whispers in the wind. Maple Leaf Hot Stove looks at the ones that got away.
- One that very much didn't get away - Pronger the the Flyers. Broad Street Hockey and The Hockey Writers debate this act of aggressive lunacy.
- At some today, spare a thought and give generously to our sister-in-arms, Wrap. And you thought YOU had a slightly disappointing Friday.
- Nineteen more picks before it comes back round to us again - what'll the second and subsequent rounds bring?

Leopold is a UFA too. So it’s Bouwmeester for a third rounder…weird.
You should wash your beard, then shave it off, nail it to a Frisbee and fling it over a rainbow.
worse…his rights before July 1st, because they are in the same boat as all teams after that for a thrid rounder…Calgary will need to dump a ton salary under the cap for this guy

Kaberle is under contract for two more years so his return should be closer to Pronger (at least relatively) than Bouwmeester who has said he won’t sign until July 1

Burke said he was waiting for Bouwmeester to move before he’d deal Kaberle. So maybe now we see some action.

I can’t believe what the Flyers gave up for Pronger. It amounts to 3 1st rounders and Lupal for a older player that wants a big deal.
So switch this to Kaberle .. he’s younger, under a good contract, a puck mover which are in higher demand, and he can get better — and unlike Pronger he won’t disrupt your team chemistry.
All of the sudden the Kessel + 1st rnd for Kaberle isn’t such a great deal anyway.

hfboards is freaking out that we took him and we’re not picking a goaltender. Which is funny because this is one of the worst drafts for goalies apparently.
although, the fact that they don’t even have a nameplate for him, is really kinda putting up all sorts of “HELP” signs. I really wanted Rajala too. Just watch the Wings take him, as they did Ferraro and Tatar. :( They’re having a good draft.

Clarification
I didn’t get scared off. I had plans for later that night. But even had I not, I likely wouldn’t have stayed around, simply because I don’t enjoy reading reactionary, unresearched statements about how the draft and Burke were total failures. As I said last night, if I wanted that, I’d read the msm. I come here for something more intelligent. I was severely let down.
"If this is another one of your lectures about how we should all blah blah blah and whatever, well you can save it because we all know it by heart."
I stand by my statement. People panicked when they didn’t like that Kadri got selected and reacted poorly to that choice. In typical fashion, we let our hopes get too high for miracles and dreams of greater things. Burke isn’t the only great GM in this league, and it’s not like Kadri is some one armed kid who learned to skate using socks on a gym floor. The kid is highly regarded, but amongst a lot of people who like the Leafs, after months of listening to dreams of Schenn 2.0, Cowen and even Tavares, having the Leafs get none, obviously rubbed a lot of the team’s fanbase the wrong way. For the record, I like the Kadri kid, not my first choice (I doubt it was Burke’s first choice, despite the jersey with his name on it), so like a lot of people I was a bit shocked at his choice. There’s a reason I am typing here and not working as a NHL GM, Burke and Co. are far better at understanding talent than I.

I’m disappointed that Burke didn’t move Kaberle, but I think the potential to move him for a king’s ransom still exists once Bouwmeester is signed. Pronger to Philly had a huge ripple effect.
Pension Plan Puppets*
* Blog contains less than 2% puppet content by weight.
I think the Kaberle deal changed with the Pronger deal, and will likely drive a lot of eastern teams to offer more for Kaberle and maybe even Kubina in hopes of keeping up with the Philly deal. It likely makes any of Kessel/Kaberle talk seem moot and will likely allow Burke to demand more.

I don't care from panic
I expect more from the people here. Honestly, I didn’t know a lot about him before the pick, so it isn’t like I was all “He’s the best pick EVAR!!!!” but the fact that other people didn’t know anything and freaked out , while proclaiming other picks to be totally wonderful (while knowing just as little about them as they did about Khadri) ruined the draft for me. Not the fact that Burke didn’t trade up, not the fact that Schenn 2.0 went to LA, but the fact that I didn’t get insightful commentary from people here. I will lower my expectations going forward. I expect nothing now.
"If this is another one of your lectures about how we should all blah blah blah and whatever, well you can save it because we all know it by heart."

I'm way late to this party...
But honestly, aside from some initial disappointment on my part because Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson was passed over (who was no secret my favourite prospect, even over Brayden Schenn), I did not freak out or say this draft was a disaster all due to Nazem Kadri. I’m not sure who you’re referring to specifically in regards to ultimately being disappointed in this community, but I’m sorry if you feel like you have to lower your expectations now.
I stand by my stance that I wasn’t overtly negative, unnecessarily reactionary, or unrealistically staking Burke’s entire reputation on trading up for Tavares. I don’t want to put words in other people, but for many, the draft was the righteous culmination or penance if you will for enduring another losing (albeit fun for me) season. Right from the get go, no matter what the Leafs did, I’m sure there would have been someone complaining or being wholly dissatisfied with the end result. It was inevitable.
While I don’t put much stock into this draft right now, I can’t say the same for other Leafs fans. Certainly, the hype didn’t match their ridiculously high expectations (one that was in part set by Brian Burke’s numerous public soundbites), but sports is an emotional, if not irrational following in itself. While I roll my eyes when people utter ridiculous statements like Burke is a hack, the Leafs rebuild is a disaster, etc., I also shrug my shoulders. Logic isn’t always the prevailing course of action when we put so much stock into something. I disagree with many thoughts, but in the end, I say my piece about why their opinion might be flawed and I move on.
Hopefully, people know my expectations for Burke and the Leafs by now. Burke has several more years under the helm as president and GM of the Leafs and to lose faith in him after barely one year doesn’t make sense to me. Having said that, I’m not all satisfied with his performance up till this point, but that’s okay. It’s a process. Again, if Burke can’t rebuild this team without the aid of lottery draft picks and superstar players landing on his lap, then frankly, why are the Leafs paying him the big bucks? I have no qualms with how the team is going about their business, and I will continue to have minimal qualms if the rebuild continues earnestly.
As I think about it, I don’t know why I spent so much time writing a response like this for a seemingly non-issue. Maybe I felt you were being a tad unfair depicting how my emotions ran gamut throughout the night when I didn’t feel unreasonable about them at all. Maybe I’m being paranoid and looking into this way too much (actually, I don’t think this is a maybe at all…sigh, I need a life). Whatever the reason, I felt a need to explain myself and perhaps, better understand where you’re coming from, too. I hope this doesn’t come out as if I’m calling you or anyone else out because that’s not my intention.
In any case, the absolute last thing I want to do is make someone feel unwelcome, trivialize their opinions, and intimidate them into repeating a certain mantra of thought. But I also don’t want to feel guilty or bad about holding a specific viewpoint, whether it be fueled with emotion, logic or both. Now, to get off my soapbox and end this ridiculously long, unnecessary rant. Apologies for taking up valuable space and time in what amounts to being equal parts melodramatic and equal parts head-scratching.

i ran for the hills
because self professed draft experts declared Kadri a failure like he was the second coming of Daigle.
Then, people started reading up on the guy, and lo and behold, he’s kinda good. Maybe they like him…
i’m pretty sure i’m buying a Kadri jersey in a few years. and so will just about everyone else.
also, i’m glad Burke didn’t trade Luke Schenn.

Welp, this wasn’t the rollicking excitement for draft day that I’d hoped, but I have good feelings about that kadri fellow. His highlight stuff is pretty damn cool and he seems to have a level head on his shoulders with a lot of local-ish support.
Kudos to Burke and team, I know they tried their damndest to make a big splash but being a GM is a hard bizness. You have to rely on the willingness of other GMs to deal fairly and based on the rumours that were coming out they were trying to absolutely pants BB. Glad he told them all to stuff it rather than do something we’d ALL regret!
