5 worst trades since the Lockout - I guess I'll Do it
As per my response on DGB's post about the sweet suffering of the Flyers Fans.
Here we go. I compiled a short list on what trades should be voted the worst since the lockout.
I probably missed a few stinkers, feel free to write some in!
Just a note: I did not include any trades that involved picks who eventually developed into great players. That is just unfair - and as we have seen - nearly impossible to predict.
Cheers

I voted for the Luongo trade, however...
My pick would be for Ottawa trades Dany Heatley. (TBA)

Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycoft

I almost put that one on there. Although Rask is superior to Pogge, and my 75 year old grandma has a better glove hand than Racrap, we could not have known that at the time.
Didn’t quite make the cut.

I thought it was a horrible trade at the time because giving up a prospective star goalie for a goalie that was third in the depth chart in Boston and had just come off a horrible season was a gross overpayment. His weaknesses were already displayed in the 06 season and it was the arrogance of JFJ wanting to reclaim a player he had originally wanted to draft that led to the move.

Not to mention that he was an RFA…

that was imediatly given a new, terrible contract before he could prove that he was even worse than when he played in boston

All true (and actually when they made the trade, I thought "Damn, I think Rask is better than Pogge’)
But again, we couldn’t be 100% sure that that was the case. Of course, with all the bad moves JFJ made, I could have done a top 5 for the worst moves he made as a GM.

The only thing that I can think of that he did right was signing Kaberle to that sweet contract…
Pretty sure that was an accident.

we drafted Rask in the first round.
there was never a doubt in my mind he was better than Pogge.

Thornton was an unpopular move at the time but Sturm has been an important piece on that team and Thornton’s departure allowed Boston to bring in Savard who filled Joe’s shoes pretty well.
Boston’s worst recent trade is Versteeg for Bochenski.

agreed
100% Chemmy i’m with you on that – that was the best trade in retrospect. a) Thornton doesn’t understand the meaning of “playoffs” and b) Bruins are a 1st place team now.
Jesus didn’t need a brother to be great. Neither does Luke Schenn.
Currently, the Luongo trade is tops
give it 4-5 years and the Pronger trade will be the worst trade in history

in recent history maybe…but all time? Johhny Buicyk from Detroit to Boston for a minor role player whose name has been lost to history.

None of the above
None of these trades are that bad. Sure in retrospect you can see that some of them were imbalanced, but at the time it would have been reasonable.
Bertuzzi was a big-time player at the time.
Sharp was languishing, not playing the way he did last season.
Thornton trade was necessary for Boston. They had to do something.
Hagman a bit of a steal, but not that bad.
Pronger trade: he got traded for the same guy he got traded for last time. So clearly it is not that uneven. I am unclear on which and how many draft picks were involved. That might push it over the edge.

Pronger for Lupul, Sbisa, 2010 first round pick, 2011 first round pick, 2010/11 conditional third round pick

who was more ripped off?
just curious – are you guys saying Flyers got ripped off or Ducks?? i think the Flyers got ripped off big time so hopefully that’s what all of you are saying as well….

Everyone thinks the Flyers gave up a lot. Ducks got a great deal.

Bertuzzi was formerly a big time player, it was clear he was past his prime and a bit of a project when that trade happened.

2009 and 2010 first round picks and a conditional pick that becomes another first rounder if Pronger is re signed by Philly…plus Sbisa and Lupul

I voted for Hagman for a 7th
and here’s why:
The player he is now, I’d say his going rate would be a 2nd or 3rd rounder.
- The Thornton trade, at the time, seemed to be a complete hose job, but a few years on, and Boston seems better for it.
- Chicago’s pick up for Sharp (a 3rd rounder) isn’t all that unreasonable. Not sure where it fell, but if it was a high 3rd, I’d say that’s a hair below value, but not insane.
- The Luongo trade looks bad because Bertuzzi was the big piece coming back. He went off the rails quick, but Allen is a great top 4 guy. Big body who can skate and hit. Luongo wasn’t resigning in FLA, so at least they got something out of the whole thing.
- Reserving judgment on the Pronger trade, but it sure looks overpayed right now. However, if he gets them to the finals, I’d say it was worth it.

Luongo was negotiating w Florida and expected to resign. Bertuzzi’s game was already is disarray. That was an absolutely horrible trade.
Yeah, Bert’s game was gone and he was having back trouble.

I don’t EVER recall seeing anything remotely trustworthy saying Luongo was expected to resign.
Jokinen was locked up long term in an effort to convince Luongo to sign long term., but I recall him not wanting to sing for more than a year or two. He wanted to ensure he was signing with a contending team before limiting his options.
then, boom, traded.

he was negotiating, Luongo expected to resign, if Keenan didn’t see it happening.
Allen was in the trade partly because of Kraijcek. He’s a better defenseman than Kraijcek but not nearly good enough to balance out the trade when you look at Luongo vs. Bertuzzi and Auld.

I often wonder if the Luongo trade was some kind of crazy f-u from keenan to ownership or something like that. Not even keenan’s man-crush on bertuzzi should have justified that trade.

I suspect so….

The Thornton trade is bad
because apparently he wasn’t shopped around the league before he was traded, meaning the return wasn’t maximized. Doesn’t matter how decent the return turned out to be, it could have (and probably would have) been better if properly shopped.
That’s a good point. Although it worked out in the end, I’m sure there were several teams who would have overpaid for Thornton’s services.
good point
i sort of take back what i just posted above – they maybe could have got more back for him
