I’m still really confused about this situation. I wonder what we’re missing on this conversation. Seems to me BB would have done well to hear Murray out. If we could’ve moved back 2 spots for a roster player and still taken Cowen… I’m just so very puzzled.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the kid we picked, but i’ll be wondering for some time what murray was offering.
thing is
the point of moving down in a draft is making sure you get who you want, when you know that they’ll be available lower down. Once Burke knew he wasn’t going to get who he wanted it didn’t matter if Murray was offering Dany Heatley or Nick Foligno (my thinking is that it would likely be a pick coming our way). Passing up on the guy you’re looking for in order to take more reaches in later rounds is not the right way to draft in the first round, in my opinion.
Thish ith awful. Why would they thteal our proshpect?

Actual Transcript After the Video-
Burke: Drainage! Drainage, Brian, you boy. Drained dry. I’m so sorry. Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, that’s a straw, you see? You watching?. And my straw reaches acroooooooss the room, and starts to drink your milkshake… I… drink… your… milkshake!
[sucking sound]
Burke: I drink it up!
Brian Murray: Don’t bully me, Brian!
[Burke roars and throws Murray across the room]
Burke: Did you think your song and dance and your superstition would help you, Murray? I am the Third Revelation! I am who the Lord has chosen!

Thisis funny every time I watch it.
But still, why not hear Murray out? What harm is there is staying quiet for five more seconds?

Maybe it just hadn’t changed and Burke wasn’t interested?

Wait a second, at the very end does anybody else hear somebody say “They would have dealt him the goalie”?
Maybe they already knew the offer… The Sens don’t have any minor league goalies, but were they offering up Brian Elliot?

Good thing he didn’t take it. Elliot’s not a good goalie.

Agreed. He’s a poor man’s Justin Pogge.

who is this Pogge guy you’re talking about?

It wouldn’t be a complete shock for the Sens to be offering up Elliot. The guy is obviously never going to be anything more than a backup and they’ve already got Leclaire. Not that the Leafs would ever bite on that, but if I were Murray, I’d see if I could flip him too.

Yeah, it actually would make total sense. The Sens have three goalies at the NHL level (Leclaire, Auld and Elliot) and the Leafs need a backup.
Of course, with Gustavsson still in play it would be an easy deal to turn down for Burke. But you can see why Murray would have floated it.

But we would have ended up with Cowen, who by not immediately refusing to sign in Ottawa showed us his true colors.

The willingness of top prospects to be picked by teams other than Toronto is a disturbing trend.

goes back to the original point
Burke didn’t want Cowen. He wanted Kadri.
What was Kadri ranked, 12th? Makes sense to try and stay in the top 10. I just can’t believe GM’s would tip their hand as to who they’re drafting…

depends on what draft ranking you look at. McKenzie had him going 8th as did ISS

too many conflicting draft reports.
May as well toss a dart and pick whoever it lands on…

comes down to Burkie taking the guy he wanted at 7th, I think he was just informing Murray that since he didnt want to deal, he’d have to find a plan B

At The Draft
Initially, it looked like every time Burke shook someone’s hand, he was making a deal.
After a while, it became a little clearer that he was using the handshake to tell the other GM’s to politely go fuck themselves

I’m pretty sure Burke and Murray had talked trade in detail previously and when Burkie asked Murray in the end on what he wanted to do, he probably realized Murray was going to try and bargain with him again and figured it wasn’t worth it – so close to announcing their pick.
Yeah, they probably discussed a trade and then Burke decided on Kadri over Cowen.

It seems like Burke was just checking to see who Murray wanted. Murray wanted Kadri, Burke wanted Kadri, so Burke said, fine, no deal. I like how at the beginning Murray says “We’ll flip you” and it kind of sounds like, “Well, flip you!” You tell’em Murray!

Penalty
You lose a 5th-round pick for not editing out McGuire talking at the end. (“That’s him…[Burke is a MONSTER]”). Aside from that, I love this clip and pretty much all of the Burke audio from draft day.
Was it last year’s draft, or a year before, where they have him going up to a GM, shooting the bull, they’re both looking up at the draft board, and the other GM is like, “We don’t really have anything to talk about right?” and Burke goes [not exact words, obviously]: “Yeah, I just had to give them something interesting on this mic.”)
