We should have laminated this for our wallets - a comparison chart of draft rankings.
BM=Bob MacKenzie; THN=The Hockey News; ISS=International Scouting Service; RED=Red Line Report; and MCK=McKeen's
EDIT: Bigger version of chart (that you can actually read) is here.

It just shows how all over the place the rankings are. Does McKeen’s (MCK) have both Tavares and Hedman ranked at 2?

So to be clear, only Red Line Report, the service that ranked Tavares #3, thinks Leblanc is better than Kadri.
Good work RLR, keep Eklund-ing for those clicks.

Wow, that came out really small.
Here’s the original link: http://democraticspace.com/draft-rankings.gif – if you click on it, you should get a larger, more legible view.

Pick #7 – Kadri: 8, 8, 8, 9, 17? WTF
Yeah that RLR sure got that one right…

Central Scouting is just as shitty. That’s why we normally use ISS, and also why I was excited when Bob McKenzie had Rajala at 50 for the Leafs.

I think it’s good that we have four or five places NHL prospects can be compared to throughout. I know RLR really emphasizes they and Central (I think) are the only professional scouting services in the business, but who knows how much of that is posturing by Kyle Woodlief.

Am I missing something?
Why doesn’t McKeen’s include every number? For example, both Tavares and Hedman are ranked #2, there is no #4, etc.
Do they just do aggregates and rank? Cause, I thought they ranked players themselves.

I didn’t get it either.

I don’t read Mckeen’s so I have no idea. Just thought it was a cool chart.

probably means that they’re both ranked at about the same level of ability…

Red Line Report… weren’t they the ones who came out first to proclaim Duchene #1 overall?

Does anyone have that as a spreadsheet? I typed out the data on the top 20 ranked skaters from everyone except CSB because I didn’t worry about NA vs. Euro. Then I compared the actual draft order to their picks. If a scouting report said someone would go first and they did, they got a score of zero. If they said someone would go third and they went first, or vice versa, they got a two for being off two picks. I averaged that out and got the following:
Bob McKenzie 3
The Hockey News 4.9
ISS 3.65
Red Line Report 5.15
McKeen’s 4.2
I’d like to expand this deeper but don’t want to type it out.

Someone show this list to that dolt Mark Seidel..
It shows the exact opposite of what he was trying to feed us regarding the Canadian teams drafts.
LeBlanc consensus ranking was 16 and he was drafted at 18.
Nattinen consensus ranking was 37 and he was taken in the third round.
Kadri consensus ranking 9 and he was taken 7th.
Ryan and Blacker both rated lower than Nattinen and drafted ahead of him.
I rest my case.
by robert ethan on Jun 29, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Which case was this?
Kadri is a SLOWER LANDON FERRARO…
by robert ethan on Jun 28, 2009 10:51 PM EDT
or was it this
As for Landon Ferraro, I detect his Dad’s hand in his post season "slippage" in the draft rankings.by robert ethan on Jun 29, 2009 12:28 AM EDT
or maybe this
I stand by my estimation that he (Landon Ferraro) is the best prospect outside of Tavares and Hedman.by robert ethan on Jun 29, 2009 2:01 AM EDT
or finally this
The Leafs use a #7 overall pick to take Kadri and the Habs get LeBlanc (who is more highly rated) at #18, but the Leafs clearly did better. Right.by robert ethan on Jun 28, 2009 10:31 PM EDT

The case that Seidel's rating of the Canadian team's drafts in the National Post..
…prominently displayed here, is full of crap. He gave the Leafs an A+ and the Habs a B- based on his perception that Montreal reached for Louis LeBlanc. In Seidel’s words, Habs “reached for the local kid at #18 while ALL SCOUTS had him rated lower”. He didn’t mention Nattinen, but clearly from the list above, if any team “reached” for their picks according to the prevailing opinion, it was the Leafs not the Habs.
No biggie, but I hate it when some “expert” feeds the public unadulterated crap, and probably gets paid for doing it.

Pick #7 – Kadri: 8, 8, 8, 9, 17? WTF <—- that’s reaching? What the hell numbers are you looking at? He went 1 pick ahead of where people predicted? How is that a reach?

i'm guessing
it’s because the Wings would have waited and drafted him in the 6th round, because they’re GENIUSES!

we all do if you’ve seen a lot of the other posts/comments on the site. Your draft analysis though of the Leafs reaching for Kadri makes no sense..

..it wasn’t my intention to slag the Leaf’s draft, or suggest that Kadri was a big “reach”. My issue was with the article by Seidel and the reasoning he used to come up with his grades. It was totally off kilter, and it seems obvious the guy didn’t spend any time researching his conclusions. He just threw crap out there, and it was printed by the National Post for some unfathomable reason.

…I think it is obvious that Montreal’s first two picks in the draft were generally ranked higher than they were taken, but their best pick probably came in the fourth round with the Russian Alexander Avtsin. He scored at close to same pace in the Russian III League last year as Filatov did the year before, and he is about twice the size. Scored at nearly exactly the same clip as Filatov’s linemate Kugryshev in his draft year in the league. Kugryshev was a second round pick in 2008, and Avtsin towers over him. Better scoring than Loktionov who was also drafted in 2008, and lit up the QMJHL last season. He is the size of Grachev, but Grachev played in a different league in his draft year. Seems to be a very similar type of prospect though. Then they got Mike Cichy in the seventh round, who was MVP of the USHL in the regular season and playoffs as well as being MVP of the Junior Hockey Challenge tournament. Cichy is only a couple months older than Louis LeBlanc and John Moore who were first round picks out of the USHL this year, and he outperformed both by a considerable margin in that league.

Nobody cares about Louis Leblanc or the Habs.
Kadri was ranked 8, 8, 8, 9, and 17. The people who ranked him 17 had the worst average of any of the scouting services and were the only scouting service to not get a SINGLE ONE of the top three picks right.
