Background Details of Failed Kessel-Kaberle Deal
Apparently Bruins' GM Peter Chiarelli is one of three things:
1. An idiot
2. The World's Biggest Optimist
3. A Recreational Drug User
There really is no other explanation for thinking that Kaberle + 7th was going for Kessel + a late 1st rounder.

chiarelli smokes crystal meth.
kessel and kaberle are both skilled at their respective position. but kaberle’s been at it longer and more consistently than kessel, not to mention a scoring winger is way easier to replace than a puck moving defenceman. and kabby’s very cheap compared to other d-men of his ilk (signed for another 2 years). kessel’s looking for the going rate, and has yet to sign.

The obvious difference being that the Leafs are going into a rebuild and the Bruins are coming out of one.
Burke was very clear that he wanted to make a big splash of a deal on draft day. And he didn’t, at least in part because he was on the phone with Chiarelli for much of the preceding 48 hours. To put it bluntly, Burke failed at what he was supposed to do. Did you see his face when the #5 pick was being made?
Yeah, Chiarelli might have spun his tires a bit, but he had nothing to lose. Burke did. Again… advantage, Chiarelli.

I don’t think it’s trolling to suggest that, perhaps, this situation involved a bit of executive gamesmanship. It’s striking that nearly every comment in here assumes that he was seriously expecting to make the most lopsided trade since… well, I won’t bring it up. But I really doubt Chiarelli was expecting lightning to strike twice in the same place.

I don’t know how else to spell this out.
Burke said repeatedly in the press that he was planning to make a dramatic move on draft day.
Burke spent at least 48 hours negotiating a major deal that had ZERO chance of actually happening.
Chiarelli was the cause of that waste-of-time.
Chiarelli’s team plays in the same division as Burke’s.
Maybe not so much a positive for Boston, just a bit of attrition against a division rival, which equals an advantage.

here's a thought
every GM wants to move up. Every GM wants to make a big splash. Only one GM works in a city where every word uttered about hockey is treated as news. I understand you viewing this as failed because your a Bruins fan. Maybe you don’t like the Leafs, that wouldn’t be a shock. There are just as many Leaf fans upset that Burke didn’t do what he said, and feel the draft day was a failure because of it.
We’re used to Toronto media spewing sound bites on repeat. Just because Burke said he wanted to make big moves to improve his team, doesn’t mean no other GM wanted to do the same. All GM’s want to improve their team. Obviously, those in the top 5 felt they had a better chance at improving through the draft than through trades.
As far as the “working the phone” argument. It’s ridiculous to think only one man knows how to use the phone, but perhaps that’s why Chiarelli got hired in the first place? He can use a phone?

I realize that there are always multiple trades on the table, but anyone who has ever had a white-collar job knows what happens when one issue is demanding your attention. You delegate the less important things, and focus on your “blockbuster”. At the very least it’s a distraction, at most it can sandbag your entire strategy.

Burke…wanted to make a big splash of a deal on draft day. And he didn’t, at least in part because he was on the phone with Chiarelli for much of the preceding 48 hours.
So status quo is an advatage for Boston because Burke didn’t have call waiting? riiiiight.

Do you think Burke only spoke to Chiarelli? How long do you think the phone calls were? It’s not like they were trading recommendations on Boston restaurants.
It takes two to tango so I am not surprised that no team wanted to deal with Burke. 4 of the top 8 teams are in disarray and no GM wanted to sacrifice the cheap young talent that is required to win in the NHL.
And while Chiarelli was on the phone with Burke he also didn’t address any of the Bruins faults while the Flyers added Chris Pronger so now he’s fallen down in the Eastern Conference pecking order. Oh, and he still has cap trouble and he still has an RFA with a bum shoulder. Advantage Burke.

Again, there was no pressure on Chiarelli to make a dramatic draft-day trade. The Kessel deal was the only rumor going around, and it was an obvious non-starter from the beginning.
I have to wonder: did you guys actually think the deal was going to happen?
by bostonblueline.blogspot.com on Jun 30, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no, because as it came to us it was Kabby and the 7th over all for Kessel, and we knew Burke wouldnt pull the trigger on that, by the time the facts came down it was already a broken deal
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
by JaredFromLondon on Jun 30, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly, the deal was obviously a non-starter yet there was an awful lot of back-and-forth between Burke and Chiarelli over something that clearly would not happen.
And, given Burke’s position, that kind of distraction is not the least bit helpful. That is the entirety of my point. It seems obvious enough, not sure why there’s so much defensiveness over it.
by bostonblueline.blogspot.com on Jun 30, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps you should read this that explains how draft day deals are made. Burke can work multiple deals at the same time. That’s one of the reasons Nonis and Fletcher were at the draft too. They weren’t there just to shake hands and look pretty.
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
by furcifer on Jun 30, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The article doesn’t address the fact that trade happen like a row of dominos. Nothing Nonis and Fletcher did would have mattered if Burke was sitting on a blockbuster for two days prior.
Again, I’m not saying anything here that isn’t obvious. Burke wasted a bunch of time on nothing. He didn’t get into the top-5 as he declared he wanted to. Chiarelli didn’t move Kessel, but that wasn’t going to happen anyway. That’s all.

Again, I have to ask… did you at ANY point think that deal was actually going to happen? I can’t speak for everyone on the Boston side, but the general sentiment was that it was obviously a ridiculous offer and would never happen.
Snippet from a personal email, dated June 25:
“No telling what the Bruins are going to do tonight. TSN has them making a ridiculous offer to the Leafs which will undoubtedly be rejected. "
Imagine my surprise to turn on the TV before the draft and STILL hear about frantic negotiations between the teams. At that point my immediate thought was, “Chiarelli is fucking with this guy. There’s no way this deal happens.”

1. Chiarelli is a genius and only called Burke to “fuck with him” and waste his time.
2. Burke sat on hold for 48 hours
3. Chiarelli can use a phone better than Burke.
4. GMs can only work on one trade at once other wise they might get confused and make a deal like Raycroft for Rask…hey wait.
5. GMs like throwing out ridiculous deals just for shits and giggles.

really doesn’t matter what the intent and purpose behind Chiarelli’s actions are, if Burke so much spent an ounce of effort on something that was never going to happen, then he failed in that regard
maybe bostonblueline is exaggerating Burke’s failure turning that 49% on his test to a 20% epic failure but 49 is still under 50 and that’s a fail no matter what school you go to

Oh my god. That was the point of the article. The GMs don’t do everything themselves. Burke wasn’t just sitting chatting to Chiarelli all day long crossing his fingers the deal would be made. He was at the draft table before any other GM. He went from table to table talking to them trying to get deals done or at least starting discussions for future trades. He picked up his phone and called other GMs. He didn’t just sit there twiddling his thumbs, playing jacks or chewing on straw.

Because it came to us as Kaberle and the 7th for Kessel. Even if it included swapping firsts it doesn’t make sense for Burke to trade Kaberle considering what he said in the past which is why I doubt that he didn’t make other trades because he was occupied by Chiarelli.
Burke did a lot of talking at the draft. I saw him talk to about a dozen GMs and the conversations were quick. It’s not like he left the draft, turned off his phone, and sat in a room with Chiarelli.
