Habs acquire Gomez
Chemmy edit: Habs trade Chris Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, Doug Janik and Pavel Valentenko to the Rangers for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto.
Ryan McDonagh is the Habs' best prospect, from Hockey's Future:
"McDonagh has it all and is expected to play a key role in the Canadiens' fortunes for the next decade. If not a number-one blueliner, he would be considered a 1A, with the talent to easily stake a long-term claim on the first defensive pairing."

This is a salary dump for the rangers, and a number one center for the Habs. Honestly, a good move…

On Twitter, Sean Leahy is wondering if this is to make room for Heatley?

its a good deal for all parties to be honest, which I don’t like at all. Sather dumps one of his bad contracts. The Habs get a top six forward for a 3rd liner forced into a top six spot.

Gomez gets $7.3M per season, straight up. Same cap hit every year until something like 2015…
Not sure how Lecavalier’s contract is structured, but honestly, wouldn’t any team rather have Vinny over Gomez?

The habs have 15 players signed, none of which were involved in this trade, so now I guess he’s got 18 signed and still has some cap room.
Higgins is an RFA, so I wonder if the Rangers even bother to qualify him? I’m becoming more and more amazed this trade passed muster with the league.

Why wouldn’t the league approve this? Do you really want the NHL front office micromanaging the propriety of trades? They let the Leafs eat a whole bunch of dead TBL salary just so they could pick up another draft pick, why would they stop Gainey from making a bone-headed trade?
Why Wouldn't the League Approve This?
Because this:
They let the Leafs take all that salary on so Tampa would meet its requirements to earn revenue-sharing, but took away an equivalent pick because the Frogren deal was considered illegal (even though the issue was settled in November and he was allowed to play for the Leafs all season).
Resident Capologist
Um, they (completely unfairly) stripped Toronto of that very pick, Fehr. AND did not penalize Tampa in any way for their involvement………
"We've had an ongoing problem with Grabovski this year." Bob Gainey, 4/04/09
They still didn’t veto the trade outright, but I see why Leafs fans would be pissed. No reason to let them eat the salary but not keep the pick. I’m the last person you will ever find defending the NHL front office, hence the reason I don’t want them micromanaging trades. I’d rather just let GMs do their thing, with the occasional bad trade, than let the NHL office make determinations regarding the “fairness” of trades.
I can’t believe you said that…

Well I think the NHL punished the Leafs for unfairly gaining an advantage. I wonder how the punishment would look for unfairly sand-bagging your own team. Would they force the Habs to take an extra 2nd round pick in compensation?
so the leafs take on a bunch of useless players who will in no way ever help them, loose a half decent prospect for a 4th rounder which is anything but a guarentee and the habs take on a potential 30 goal 40 assist man who could help them out greatly at the center position where they are notably weak, abit with a giant contract and the Habs are the sandbagged ones?
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
by JaredFromLondon on Jun 30, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Well the Habs threw in a top prospect for absolutely no reason. I thought that was the original complaint with the trade. The Leafs may have taken a financial hit but the deal with TBL didn’t have much of an impact in terms of hockey product. I don’t think either deal is really a problem, I’m not trying to defend how it all worked out. I’m just saying there is zero reason that the league should get involved with this current trade.
and there was zero they should have gotten involved in the Leafs trade, which they did, it was a mock serious comparison
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
by JaredFromLondon on Jun 30, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
If the Leafs unfarly gained an advantage through the Frogren contract, why was he allowed to play for the Leafs all season until right after the Tampa trade? And the league and the PA settled the contract issue back in November.
Either the contract was illegal all along, in which case Frogren never should have been allowed to play for the Leafs, or the contract was legal, in which case we were indirectly penalized for taking salary from the Lightning in that deal.
Resident Capologist
It’s my understanding that Frogren was allowed to play last season because the NHLPA grieved the NHL’s decision to veto the contract (similar to a player being allowed to play if a team/NHLPA greieve a suspension).
Unfortunately, it was ultimately determined that the Frogren bonus payment contravened the CBA and the Leafs were fined $500K and a 4th round pick.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Sadly no. I would have to conclude he couldn’t get the info. Having seen the NHL constitution (Thanks Balsillie!) and the powers of the Commissioner to arbitrarily punish teams, it’s not surprising that the Leafs wouldn’t provide further comment.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
Again, I’m not defending the NHL I’m just saying there is no reason they should take any action with respect to the Gomez trade.
i didn’t say they should, my point was that they approved it to begin with.
Higgins, as an RFA, is the main piece of this deal. There is also the top ranked prospect.
If Higgins doesn’t sign tomorrow, then this is a $7M a year centerman for a prospect. That sounds out of whack to me. Especially when the league stated it didn’t like the TBL/TOR trade…

This is a bad trade because of Gomez’s contract but it’s not unreasonable. The NHL was mad that the Leafs took on the contracts of guys that had season ending injuries in return for an extra mid-round draft pick. I think it was all inconsequential ultimately but I can see why the league wouldn’t want that behavior to be repeated. This is a trade of players for players; even if it’s bad I don’t see why the NHL would step in. They watched TBL completely devalue Dan Boyle and did nothing. Why would they step in here.
A season ending injury is quite the same as an unsigned RFA on the eve of free agency, don’t you think?
And you keep saying “step in.” The league HAS to approve all trades, they’re already involved, and already stepped in. And it’s still NOT my point.
The optics of this trade reek. I’m a fan of neither team, and quite frankly, if MTL wants to take on an anchor of a contract, more power to them. I just find it hard to believe that someone working in the league office saw this contract and didn’t think it looked awfully unbalanced, like a straight salary dump.

So should the Bouwmeester trade be voided? How about the trade for Malone’s rights last year? Rights get traded all the time… because they have value… especially an RFA situation where you don’t just get negotiating rights but you get the right of first refusal. You don’t have to like the trade but it’s not nakedly one-sided or done for financial reasons (not the financial reasons that upset the NHL with the TOR/TBL trade).
if you think this was a trade for Higgins rights, then you’re absolutely right.
It wasn’t, but whatever…

And they approve trades just to make sure both teams actually want the trades to happen and to make it official (see DGB’s Brian Burke Mic’d up post for an example of why). They are not supposed to be micromanaging trades determining the relative value of the returns. The league has never played that role, and shouldn’t start now. Approving the trade by certifying that the paperwork is in order is different from stepping in and being involved in the trade. The Church says “I now pronounce you man and wife” but doesn’t tell you who you have to Marry.
hahaha...
DGB’s satirical column is most definitely a resource used to determine league bylaws..

I think you missed my point with the DGB reference. It’s the interwebs, this post will be here for all eternity (until the nuclear Armageddon).
no, i got it
it’s still funny…
Anyhoo, my whole point is the optics of this trade makes me wonder why this trade as allowed to pass. I assumed you understood that I was referring to (as lot’s of folks here did) the leagues need to comment on and involve themselves in the TBL/TOR trade. In essence Bettmann felt it prudent to state that the TBL/TOR trade stunk and he didn’t like it. This trade, which is a salary dump (and if you say otherwise you’re HIGHLY overvaluing Higgins) is quite similar to the aforementoined trade that was so rotten, the commish needed to get involved.
You, as a Caps fan (I can only assume, btw, Fehr is awesome…serious, love him) don’t see that as an issue. It’s no big deal when anyone, league or otherwise (such as yourself) involves themselves in the Leafs business. Given that this is an MTL/NYR trade, it’s their business. And so, no one really feels compelled to point out the same thing as they did in the TOR/TBL trade. It’s a salary dump, and it stinks.
I’ve yet to stick my nose into MTL or NYR message boards, because I don’t care. I’ve seen the comments on a habs board (which basically boil down to their assumption this is the coming apocalypse) but since it doesn’t really involve the Leafs, oh well. I don’t really feel compelled to get involved.
However, history has shown us that if the Leafs were involved, so would everyone else, including the league offices, and quite possibly a Caps fan or two. :)

the theme arc of that thread
begins on two points:
Please not Gomez
Please not a lot of Salary.
Then it goes downhill…

HEY YOU GAIZ
Remember when we used to wish Gainey would come run the Leafs?
Bullet. Dodged.
7.5 M cap hit for five years for a guy outscored by Fistpump.
Remember the media had a field day when Dryden couldn’t land Gainey? “ken we are disappoint!”

Too bad, so sad
Higgins had overactive hormones and Gainey was so pissed he dealt him. But all year, the sane media covering the hillbillies has encouraged Gainey to make the team bigger, the reliance on the power play and hot goalie strategy wasn’t working. On a positive note, this deal ensures that Vinnie will be playing in our new arena when Tampa moves to Quebec City in 2011. Oh, revenge is a dish best served cold, on ice.
Honestly, if you’re not on twitter, you’re missing out. Hockey fans from around the world are gathering to destroy the Habs over this one.

This is amazing. Habs fans are despondent and DGB is running rampant.

WIN
In fairness to Gainey, if you made a list of best Hispanic-Alaskan players in the NHL today, Gomez is in the top five.
Go through all of them but I hope you don’t have to go to the bathroom.

He’s also in the bottom 5

Mirtle was valiantly defending him, and I agree with him that Gomez is a good player and can be a number one centre. But he’s definitely not a $7+ million player for the next five years type player. Just a peculiarly bad trade.

I think in Montreal, surrounded with the right guys, he’ll excel. As a non-francophone, I’m not sure how much pressure will be put on him to be a team leader and voice to the media.
In New York they were Center heavy with Drury and him both competing for minutes. Gomez feeding a guy like Kovalev will do wonders for both, that’s my worry…

Yeah I am starting to fret that our celebrations may be a tad premature. Gomez is not a bad player by any means.

Yeah he’ll have fun skating in circles out there by himself I guess. But still, I just worry about getting my gloat on. I’ll worry for the rest of us though, you guys have fun! heh

Imagine how you’d feel if Burke traded Poni and Tlusty for Gomez.
That should put it in perspective a bit.
Hah, true! The more I look at it now, that contract is just so ludicrous there’s no way it can turn out to be a great deal for the Habs. At best they break even BUT that would take really high levels of production from Gomez and probably Kovalev. Probably not likely to get both going consistently.

actually
yeah… that’s some awesome speed and offensive danger

No doubt the guy is overpaid, but VERY few players aren’t.
We’re lucky with Kaberle being underpaid at market value, but it’s impossible to find players who are a bargain

With Hossa a UFA he’s the 7th highest cap hit in the league, and at 5 more years. Check out the list, and while some around him aren’t great deals either, it kind of puts it into perspective just how horrible his contract is.
that Campbell one makes me cringe every time I see it…

Antro is a stiff, Poni is soft and overrated, and Blake is a joke of a player according to every other fan right?
They all outscored Gomez and they played on the 7th worst team. And none of them have contracts running 5 more years at $7.3M per.

It’s just that why would you include a top prospect and a useful player to get this type of albatross contract? You’d think Bob would have the leverage here.
that is peculiar.
were I a habs fan I’d hate this, that said, I don’t love it from our perspective either…

I'd really love to know how this trade went down
It honestly seems something straight out of DGB’s blog or JFJ’s memoirs. I really want to know how high Sather started before they met in the middle.
Gomez isn’t worth a 7th rounder based on his contract, let alone one of McDonagh or Higgins.
You have to imagine they started from a baseline of Gomez and Higgins and worked up from there.
Which is awesome, because it means Sather actually had the sheer balls to ask for Gainey’s top prospect to even it up.

My God
It’s like the day of retarded GMs, and that doesn’t even include the Pronger deal.
Ottawa wants Dustin Penner as part of the package dating back to Sens’ GM Bryan Murray’s days in Anaheim with Penner and as much as Edmonton would like to move Penner and his $4.25 million cap hit, Heatley’s $7.5 million is a tough nut to crack.
They want Penner? Jeesh.
And Habs going after Havlat and Gaborik, God I’m going to love it when the $15 million dollars the Habs have devoted to their top two offensive players nets them under 20 goals.
Edmonton should just do it… getting rid of Penner for a proven scorer like Heatley is awesome. Just find some poor sap (Atlanta?) to take Souray.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
This is awesome!
Gainey could have tried to trade for Vinny or sign the Sedins. Instead, he makes a trade for Scott Gomez, a decent but severely overpaid player. And just when our supply of delicious Hab fan tears was running low…
And Penner in Ottawa is high comedy.
