A Toronto-based group with a proposal to bring a second NHL team to the Greater Toronto Area says the team would be named the Toronto Legacy and would play out of a 30,000-seat facility built at Downsview Park.
The new facility would have multiple ice pads for public skating, with more seating than the Air Canada Centre. And the team would offer 25 per cent of its proceeds to seven national charities, including Carnegie's Future Aces Scholarship Foundation.
Talk about pie in the sky. Simmons was, bear with me, right. These guys have not even talked to the NHL about an expansion team, they announce it during the Stanley Cup Final, and they didn't talk to the NHL about it. I bet Herb Carnegie just went up on a death list alongside Jim Balsillie.

on the Fan they just talked about how they talked in the Press Conference about being the Leafs little brother.

If by “the Leafs little brother” you mean “the Leafs bitch” then I could support that. Then again, that position has already been filled by the Sens.

Little bit insane. 30 000 seat arena, huge complex with ice rinks, hotel, condos, a pond etc. and they haven’t talked to the NHL yet.

The half-glass stadium is pretty cool….until you realize that in the layout drawing the glass portion is facing West, and any afternoon game would be blinding for those fans sitting on the opposite of the stadium. And the fact that having the sun shining directly on the ice surface would cause the ice to melt making for a horrible skating surface.

The half glass was near the ice?

If they have attendance issues, would the media report the glass being half-empty or half-full?

Check out the jersey on their website, doesn’t look half bad. Sorta looks like what you’d see at a “heritage” type game

They’re pulling numbers out of the ether.
A stadium that’d be the biggest in the NHL by 8,500? $50 tickets sound great, but they’re going to be in the third tier nosebleeds where the only thing to do will be to get drunk, cos you sure as hell aren’t seeing the game.
I don’t see any business giving a quarter of it’s profits away and staying afloat long term. It’s also a pretty cynical marketing tool. Publicising fundraising events is different, but people who give money to charity out of the goodness of their hearts don’t generally let the world know about how nice they’re being doing it.
It’s just PR bullshit to make themselves look nicer than big bad, old MLSE. A lot of people with too much time, money and marketing people on their hands.

It gives me the impression of a college presentation for some hypothetical business. The renderings looked like they cost $50, and the site map looks like it was made in Microsoft Visio over the course of a weekend. And the ‘logo’ is basically just a smattering of everything Toronto+hockey.

What is this shit?
“boys and girls”. “a young man’s dream became the hope of Canada”, “future aces”, giving the best seats away, 3 jerseys including the Leafs and the visiting team??? WTF?
Is that what they plan on announcing before the game? I definitely think this is a campaign of some kind.
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
If you get to the end, which I must say took some effort, you hear children cheering as if the speaker was talking to them before they got into the stadium.
If they want to call the young kids future ace after Herb’s charity; why not call the team the Toronto Aces? They could even buy the Alaskan ECHL team to go along with the name.

Scattered Thoughts
-Congratulations for actually making the Columbus Blue Jackets sound tough.
-30,000 seats is insanity. Consider that on some weeknight games against the Tampas and the Islanders of the NHL, there were unused seats in the ACC. How in the holy hell do they plan on getting 30,000 people to go see the Legacy and the Thrashers on a Wednesday?
-More to the point, where would the financing for this pipe-dream of an arena come from? People are losing their minds at the suggestion that Balsillie will use public money to reonvate Copps? How much would building a 30,000 seat stadium and entertainment complex cost? Half a billion?
-I would also like to propose my “vision” for a team in Toronto. We have confirmed financing of the $500 in my savings account, but we are in negotiations with several extremely excited investors to raise that amount to infinity. .
The team will operate out of a 60 year-old dilapidated arena in Don Mills, although renovations will cost $10 to sand the splinters out of the wooden bleachers. We have designed a wonderful jersey that will consist of several Maple Leafs practice jerseys we found at Value Village, but with a sharp red pinnie overtop.
Our team’s goal will be to provide commitment to sportsmanship, a commitment to excellence, and to teach the lessons that numerous university students learn every year (and that the people who presented the Toronto Legacy never learned); namely that it’s not a good idea to do a shitload of drugs the night before your presentation is due, because while you might think it’s the greatest thing in the history of ever, to everyone with at least 4 brain cells it looks like a half-assed piece of crap thrown together at the last second by a pretentious douche.

well done
well done indeed
but its true and funny, a bunch of investors with $1 billion to put into an NHL franchise can’t afford to spent more then 20 bucks on their official presentation?
Gotta wonder

Do you think the arena plans came down because they just realized that Downsview is owned by the federal gov’t?
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
hahaha
Probably. Every single proposed sports building in city history has started out being at Downsview. The Argos, TFC, the National Soccer Stadium. Every single one gets built somewhere else.

The PR firm behind this reps Ruby Dhalla and the Miss Universe Pageant.
Not exactly a stunning list of blue chip prospects or they type of thing that inspires their ability to secure $1B in financing.

Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
they hired the same people?
A Nation of Masochists a blog dedicated to Toronto sports fans, who are continually punished but keep coming back for more.
No, they didn’t hire him, he’s running the bid.
The actual bid was headed up by a PR exec named Andrew Lopez. His previous clients include Dhalla and the Miss Universe Canada Pageant. His company is called, “Be The One Communications” and he runs it with a gmail account (andrewlopez66@gmail.com).
I think that pretty much tells us all we need to know about the seriousness of this so-called $1B dollar deal.
