PPP Montreal Invasion
The Itinerary:
Friday, 4pm - Delta Centre-ville Hotel Lobby
Our hotel is pretty close to the Bell Centre, and will hopefully be less crowded than the exterior of the arena which should allow us to say hello and whatnot without a lot of false positives. I'll make PPP hold up a sign like "In accordance with Megan's Law I'm required to notify you of my intent to move into your neighborhood" so you'll know it's us. From there we'll stampede to the Bell Centre around 4:30 to give people time to arrive. [Directions]
Friday, Post-draft: Hurley's Pub
PPP and I are heading to Hurley's where the other SBNation bloggers will be gathering. You're all welcome to attend. Should be a good time. General mayhem elsewhere to follow. [Directions]
Saturday, 9am - Delta Centre-ville Hotel Lobby
We'll stage out of our hotel lobby again in case anyone didn't find us Friday night or drank so much that they forgot our names and faces. At 9:30 we'll slide over to the Bell Centre for round 2 of the draft. You're on your own after the draft, I plan to go antiques shopping. (Just kidding. Someone call the cops and bail me out if necessary before 7pm so I don't miss the free beer giveaway).
Saturday, 8pm: Peel Pub
It's only fitting that a PPP gathering happen at a bar whose initials are "PP". The Peel Pub Presents: Pension Plan Puppets Price-free Pint Partaking Party (The PPP: PPPPPPP). That's right. Show up at 8pm and PPP and I will buy you a beer. There should probably be some sort of legal disclaimer on this but basically if there are any questions or concerns about our offer I hate you. [Directions]
You'll notice that the Peel Pub is on Rue Ste Catherine, so when we're bored of the Peel Pub we'll go see a donkey show or pay midget strippers to stab each other to death or something, who knows?

Skinnyfish, PPP, and I are staying at the Delta Centre-ville hotel (777 University Street, MontrĂ©al, Quebec H3C 3Z7). We got the room on Hotwire which is like Priceline sort of. The room was $79 a night and 3.5 stars if you want to try and swindle your way in there. We’ll be there Friday and Saturday night.
SkinnyFish and I need tickets to the draft. Anyone have any ideas?

Well, Me and a friend of mine(and a friend of his, more on why I make this distinction below) are busing in on Friday.
We will be in Downtown MTL around 1:30-2PM on Friday afternoon. The bus terminal is only 1.79 miles(Mapquest) from the Bell Centre.
Neither of them are staying overnight and are busing back home just after Midnight(my friend is playing in that CBC ball hockey Tournament in Ottawa on Saturday.)
If I am having a really good time (drunk) I will probably look for last minute plans to crash somewhere… if I can’t I’m busing back that night as well.
Now the reason I made the above distinction is my buddy is an Oiler fan, but I seem to remember that the guy he is bringing is a Habs fan.
Wrap is looking to get a track on tickets and wants to know who is going for sure. Not sure if they assign specific seats, so the plan is try to get a block of tickets so we aren’t isolated all over the arena.
Friday Afternoon we all need to meet up somewhere before marching into the Bell Centre.
That’s all for now
PS I believe the tickets are supposed to be free and have not been released yet, don’t bother looking at those bullshit sites.

Dear Fan,
Thank you for taking the time to write and express your interest in the Montreal Canadiens.
We don’t have any information concerning the way the public will be admitted for Entry Draft 2009 in Montreal. We invite you to visit frequently the website of the Montreal Canadiens at www.canadiens.com . As soon as details are being made available it will be posted on the website of the Montreal Canadiens. And I even talked to HF29, and seriously, it’s utter chaos. And apparently they are bit behind getting out press cred stuff out. I am still waiting to hear if I have the go ahead.

Last year apparently they released them and you could claim up to four. So I am thinking everyone needs to claim 4. So we have extras. And if we cover everyone we can sell the extras for like 10 bucks. Is that wrong?

Montreal Bars
For those of you interested:
There is sort of two downtowns in Montreal, separated by a few blocks. My guess is you guys will be staying around Crescent/Bishop, since that’s the more common bar strip and will be near the Delta (great hotel by the way).
Bars on Crescent:
Brutopia: My personal favourite, it’s a microbrewery, cheap prices by Montreal standards. Their raspberry blond is my favourite beer here, reminds me of KLB’s raspberry. For cing a sept (their happy hour, typically 5 to 7), beer is $5, add 50 cents for normal prices.
Hurley’s: beside Brutopia, great bar, great live music, beer usually runs $6 a pint for Quebec brands (i.e. St Ambroise, Belle Gueule, Unibroue, etc), while typical draughts run for $7 and imports will be $8.
Thursday’s: similar to Hurley’s
Winston Churchill’s (or Winnie’s). Great patio that gets the most sun, prices similar to Hurley’s.
Les 3 Brasseurs: another microbrewery that has real good, affordable food.
Mad Hatter: more of a younger crowd, drunken time kinda place, it’s moved locations 3 times now and I have yet to visit the new one to be able to give you a good enough description, it’s across the street from Brutopia.
Bars on Bishop (one block west of Crescent)
McKibbons: one of my friend’s favourite, has a good dance floor for the ladies. Prices are again identical to Hurley’s. Has a nice size patio.
Irish Embassy: another good Irish pub, these prices are a little bit more expensive (about 50c – $1 more per pint), but has a nice size patio).
Le Social: newish pub that a friend’s relative used to own, so I used to visit it a lot when it was starting up. Have not been since he sold it, and when I was going didn’t get much business.
Other notable bars:
Peel pub (obviously on Peel, a few blocks east of Crescent). I’m sure you all know this place.
McLean’s – couple down from Peel, real good place, I like it a lot. Great food, good prices.
St. Elizabeth: in a dumpier part of town, near St. Laurent, this place has the most awesomest patio in the world, you really have to see it to believe it.
St. Sulpice: on St. Denis, this place has the biggest patio I’ve seen outside of the Docks. Great prices too (typically the St. Denis/St. Laurent area has cheaper prices than Crescent/Bishop).
Foufounes: off St. Laurent, is a shady bar but dirt cheap with decent heavy music.
That’s all I can think of for now, if anyone has specific questions or wants to know about food or something, let me know.
Hope you all have fun, I’m upset I’m going to miss it.

love le st sulpice. spent new year’s eve there once – $45 all you can drink, and they weren’t f-ing around. round of 3 shots each please? no problem. it got ugly.
we also went there after the leafs-habs game at the bell centre in jan 04. we ended up getting thrown out by the end of the night, although i don’t remember what for exactly. i do remember heckling the francophone bartenders all night, asking them why the habs were so shit, and also stepping up to the mic while the acoustic guitar guy was on a break and announcing to the bar that “the leafs rule, habs suck balls.” good times.

When I’m in Montreal I drink at Miami, a dive bar on the plateau. It’s skanky, but it has cheap drinks and usually plays great music.
Foufounes is another good place to drink.

For Completeness
The other “downtown” is based around St-Laurent, which is about a fifteen or twenty minute walk from Crescent. It’s less touristy but more scene-y, but has some great places.
You start at St-Laurent and Sherbrooke. If you go south, you’ll have nothingness for a bit, then a bunch of shady strip clubs and bars in which to pick up CEGEP kids, and then Chinatown – so we’ll not be talking about that.
Going north, solid options are:
Vol de Nuit: just at the start of the Cobblestones. Lots of room inside, plenty of tables on the outside. Average price for beer, so around twelve bucks for a pitcher.
(Intermezzo – in the walk between these two places is a burger joint called “Buns”; if you need food, go there)
Bifteck: dirty bar frequented by the McGill population, although most of them will have left town at this point. Five shots for fifteen bucks, small pitchers of Boreale for nine. Free popcorn, cheap pool upstairs, TVs.
Pistol: small hipster bar, where you have to order “food” (a three-dollar veggie tray) with alcohol for their license. Good sandwiches, run by Sam Roberts’ brother.
Copacabana: similar to Bifeck, but grungier and more Franco. I like it a lot more. It also has a surprisingly good and varied scratch kitchen menu, if you need some late-night food in a bar.
Frappe: two floors, nice outdoor patio on the roof with a large TV there, somewhat expensive.
Champs: Montreal’s premier sports bar, with several million TVs. Aside from that, it sucks.
There are also a whole host of clubs along that strip, if that’s your thing. There’s also Schwartz’s, which is Montreal’s best smoked meat (open until 230, I think) and the Main, which is only good because it stays open later than Schwartz’s.
For the Crescent strip, lordosis is right on. Add that 3 Brasseurs is a chain of microbreweries, but a pretty good one – it’s also got lots of room upstairs and takes reservations for dinner, so it makes a good staging area. Mad Hatters is nothing special, and a young crowd – but it has a nice small rooftop patio. Le Social has turned more into a club recently, but can be fun. St. Elizabeth does indeed have the best patio around, but I still get lost going there (and I lived in Montreal for six years) – and you’ll never get a seat if it’s remotely nice out.
Someone asked in another thread about not liking Molson – you shouldn’t have a problem with that. The city’s Molson distributor also does Keith’s, so if a bar has one on tap they’ll very often have the other as well. Likewise, if your bar serves Boreale, it will probably serve Moosehead too.
As for recommendations, the places I’m sure to hit when I have friends in town are, on Crescent, Brutopia, Hurley’s, and Boustan for after-drinking food (best Lebanese fast food in town; ask for a Creation) and on St-Laurent, Copa and Schwartz’s.
Lastly, if you’re staying at the Delta Centre-Ville (where I spent much too much of my life), your two closest bars are O’Hara’s and Le Vieux Dublin – in both cases, walk about five minutes north on University and you’ll run into them. O’Hara’s has no real appealing qualities aside from it’s 30 seconds closer than the other place. Old Dublin used to be one of my favourite places in town; legit Irish character, good crowd that goes/works there, and a killer whiskey selection. They would also have no problems if you ordered pizza directly to the pub. Having said that, they moved (around the corner) about six months ago, and I haven’t been since (I haven’t had time).

Food
If you’re looking for restaurants around the Bell Centre, the big three are Le Keg, Baton Rouge, and Brasserie Brunoise. All three can take/are designed for larger groups, and take reservations. Le Keg is like the Keg in Toronto, but nicer decor (and more expensive). Baton Rouge is like a poor man’s Le Keg, but with the addition of mediocre ribs. Brasserie Brunoise is the mass-market version of a celebrated Monteal restaurant, and is quite good both food and value (esp. compared to the other two).
If you want something fancy and but don’t want to blow the bank, Deca77 is nice – and if you’re all about blowing the bank, Queue de Cheval is right there. As was I mentioned elsewhere, the 3 Brasseurs on Crescent (there’s also one closer to the hotel at McGill College and St Catherines) is pretty good food, and great for groups of any size.
There are a bunch of restaurants along St Catharines, but I’d avoid them. If you must, I hear Mister Steer isn’t that bad, and Nickels (owned by future Habs owner Celine Dion) is the same anywhere. There are also a few Basha locations, and they’re identically OK.
Along Crescent there are a bunch of restaurants, but in all cases you’re paying a serious premium for location, and none of them are that great (except Boustan, which I can’t stress enough is key after a night out along that strip). There’s also a BBQ place (Bofinger) up the street from the Delta, which is tasty but in no way French.
Also remember that you can’t turn right on a red light (but you shouldn’t be driving anyways), that you can buy beer at convenience stores, that the SAQ (LCBO) closes earlier than you’d think, and that you can walk anywhere you’d be interested in going.

Excellent job
Very nicely done, you and I should charge them for being tour guides.
I just want to add, I love bofinger, great pulled pork sandwiches and quite affordable.
Boustan fucking rocks. BEST DRUNK FOOD EVER
Basha is great too.
And finally, I can’t believe I forgot this, but you all MUST visit Bar-B-Barn. Located on Guy, it has the best ribs in the world. It is a staple of a friend and mine to hit this place for ribs (special price happens before 5) before Leaf games here. Their menu is their placemat, you can have chicken, or ribs. I’ve only ever had the ribs. Come in 3 (baby), 6 (half) or 12 (full rack). I can eat a fair amount, and have done the 12 a couple times, but it isn’t a walk in the park. I really suggest the PPPers go there at least one night. Beer prices are decent too. The special is 3 ribs (often comes with 4 or 5), fries/onion rings, spanish rice, pop for $9.99. Regular prices are 3 for $10.99 (and no drink), 6 for 14.99 (I think) and 12 for ($18.99 I think). But seriously worth it. Great sauce.
Damn I’m hungry now.

…is that in a building that holds 21,000 that they could only have a ‘limited number of tickets.’
I realize that the lower bowl and ice level will be draftees, family, media, NHL officials and Team Reps… but doesn’t that still leave at least 17,000 seats?
And WTF is up with not having walk ups?
