I'm glad it's not about goals

Orr, Exelby and Komi combined for 3 goals last year. Even if you add in Colin Stuart’s 5 goals in 33 games….

Kubina had 14.

Sooo, here’s hoping these guys will be better at preventing goals.

I'm not sure why we're glad about it being not about goals

When we’re apparently whittling down around 80 goals from last season’s production of 250.

The Leafs have possibly got 25-30 goals coming from their additions… maybe 40 if we’re lucky.

That means we’re down to 210 goals. That would put us 24th in the NHL… which is where we finished last season defensively.

We also haven’t fixed the thing that was the main culprit behind giving up so many last season – goaltending – (yet)… so I don’t know why we’re ecstatic at this point.

From where I sit all the Leafs are is tougher. We aren’t a lot better defensively, and our goaltending and offense is worse than last season.

They’ll be more physical but finish slightly behind where they did this season. I’m sure some people are ok with that, but I don’t really get it – and I don’t think it lines up with Burke’s M.O.

Well...

Toskala is coming off Hip Surgery… and we don’t have Gerber anymore… so that leaves us with Pogge and Reimer as backups?

That’s worse than last year… yeah.

I’m just not sure what the point is in being all amped about next season at this point just because we signed Colton Orr and Mike Komisarek.

I actually got a comment into the Spin-
Ok, people, for the last time, over the last 15 years, the Leafs are definitely the most competitive overall Canadian team, including solely against Canadian teams. Don’t believe me? Do some reading for a change.
http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2009/4/5/823851/perspective-or-your-team-sucks-too
Got it? So Burke did exactly what he said he would do, and turned the Leaf defence into the most feared in the East overnite and made the team much, much tougher.
In all likelihood our offence is going to take a hit, but we might sign the Monster and have a ton of cap to spend on offence after next year, while waiting for Kadri, Mitchell, et al to finish developing.
We are well on the way, and I am getting truly, truly tired of the endless mindless chattering of Leaf-haters around here, who, day after day, show up to tell the world how they expend energy posting about a team they hate. You are very, very sad people, and when the Cup comes, I expect every single one of you to show up here and apologize profusely. Whatever team it is you actually cheer for, you’re about to be intro’d to a world of hurt when you cross our blueline.
You really, desperately need a new crop of commenters, Damien. These ones are the worst-sounding broken record I’ve ever heard in my life.

No, I agree Philly has a better defensive core than the Leafs. But in terms of toughness, Toronto won’t be pushed around by many teams, including the Flyers. Schenn, Finger, Frogren, Komisarek, Exelby, and Oreskovic.

Jeez, that’s not a lot of offence when you actually write it down.

I’m willing to believe that Frogren and Oreskovic aren’t quite in Burke’s plans. Still, in terms of roster players who provide offense we’re down to a pick 2 of Kaberle, White, and Van Ryn. Although I’m confident Finger will produce a bit more with increased opportunity.

I see what you did there. Honestly, 20 goals for Kulemin is what I’m thinking as max and 15 or so for Tlusty. Tlusty will have an adjustment period, considering he won’t be playing in his customary 4th line anymore (thanks again Maurice!).

i think you can add about 5 goals to each of those totals

Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option

by JaredFromLondon on Jul 1, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That depends on where Kulemin and Tlusty are slotted. Kulemin can easily be the team’s designated two-line player, ie. Steen, and he’ll thrive in that role at the expense of goals.

As the resident numbers geek and stats man, I think a lot of us would love to have you do a nice, long post about our potential offence next year, taking in possible prospects, etc. I’m just not worried- if we play nasty, get a little more tuned to Wilson’s defensive play, and get our goaltending in order, the offence will come in time.
And we were still 10th in scoring last year, not at the bottom of the league.

I agree

with Blurr that Cammy is a good player, worth 5 mil, maybe worth 6 mil a year but as mf37 already pointed out, we already have a small fast forward in Jason Blake who can score when he is willing to step it up. I’m not too concerned about getting more speedy puck-handling forwards, maybe a bit more size.

So even if Cammy is worth 6 mil a year, he’s not worth that much to the Leafs simply because he won’t be that great of a fit. Just my 2 cents.

Also Gainey had like 34 mil to throw around for next year, Leafs at 16… so hard to compete with them in offering large contracts relative to cap space.

I get what you're saying

I really do. But I guess you have to take the bigger picture. Tucker was awesome as a Leaf, yet was hated by every other team. We were happy to have him, others never wanted him no matter what.

There are reasons players are hated by other teams and their fans; it’s because they do their job so well. I know for a fact (and it’s obvious by the all-star vote) that Komisarek was beloved by the habs fans, yet hated by us, Bruins fans, etc. Hopefully we’ll soon see why his own fans love him, and why others hate him. Maybe he’ll become a Leaf cult hero like Tucker, a previous hab that became a Leaf.

I heard that too

And I’m in Montreal. But keep in mind the whole team fell off in the 2nd half, attributing one act to Komisarek’s decline doesn’t quite seem justified. Remember, Kovalev (their alternate captain) got sent home for a few days, their star goalie got benched, other shit happened too. The habs were a mess, it’s not hard to figure out it probably affected the whole team, and especially those considered leaders like Komisarek.

Putting on my tinfoil hat here. Burke and Wilson’s standing on US national team played a huge part for Komi. But if he doesn’t make the team, what kind of attitude does this guy bring? Or let’s say he does make the team, but has a terrible tournament that leads to Wilson benching him or whatever. We all saw firsthand what happened to Bryan McCabe at the Olympics and his play afterward…

I can’t see the Oil moving on Kaberle. Their D already includes Souray and Visnovski (tying up a nice $11M in cap space). Kabs doesn’t bring a skill they’re lacking.

Schremp is likely done this year. He’s no longer waiver exempt and is way way way down on the Oilers depth chart. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up on another AHL team out of the Oiler’s system by the end of the year.

Anyway, I like the Colton Orr and Komisarek signings, I get the feeling that Komi will be one of those players I hated his guts as a Hab but love as a Leaf. OK with the Kubina trade, kinda thought we’d get more for him though, hopefully Exelby is as much of a destroyer as I hear he is.

Ana – Bobby Ryan (he’s Burke baby from draft day, he would love to have him on this team)
LA – The obvious Braydon Schenn + Teubert rumor he’ll all dream for.
Van – Elder or Obrien and may’be Schneider (in case Gustavsson flies for Dallas)
Min – Harding and Boogard.
Bos – Kessel and Sturm or Colborne.

Komisarek can be a legitimate All Star...

…if he is given the right role. He isn’t the goon that he was typecast as in Montreal. They stuck him in that role because he was the only legitimate heavyweight in a rotating cast of soft undersized Euros and Quebecois. Mike has at least as much offensive skill as Kubina had, and hopefully will be allowed to exercise it in a similar fashion in T.O. In Montreal he got 0 powerplay time, despite the fact that he scored as many points even strength as any of the other Hab defensemen. Or a lot of the “offensive” blueliners in the league like Chara, Phaneuf, Zidlicky, Hamhuis, etc. At the U. of M. Komo was the second leading scorer behind J.M. Liles of all the CCHA defensemen in his sophomore year before he turned pro. He was a year or two younger than Liles as well. In his rookie pro season in the AHL, he was the top scoring rookie defenseman in the league and a mid season All Star before being called up by the Habs. Since then he has been shackled.

“Komo your job is to clean up after Alexsander and Jean-Pierre who are both about 5-9 and 165 pounds and haven’t been on their own side of the centre ice line in the past three years.”. Little wonder that Mike didn’t even bother making the Canadiens a counter offer before July 1.

by robert ethan on Jul 1, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

I actually kind of agree with most of your sentiments. At the same token, Komisarek did a lot of underhanded and cheap moves that enraged a lot of players from the other side. While that’s a good thing in terms of getting his opponents riled up, I rather not have a prominent member of the d-core running around and risking stupid penalty minutes and/or retaliation on other players for his dumb dumb moves. I also don’t think he has a lot of offensive upside at his age and will be very surprised if Komi can match Kubina’s point totals (Kubina was a 40 point scorer, which Komi has never reached ever at any level of pro hockey).

Komisarek on the PP? Really? 12 career goals does not a PP quarterback make. Not to mention, he had the second lowest point total (the lowest being a 5th defenseman) in the Montreal back end.

He was expected to be a defensive defensemen (not a goon, you don’t become #2 with a goon’s role), and that’s what he’s good at, expecting any more will only lead to disappointment.

by ronniech on Jul 1, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, I’m a fucking liar. He had the third lowest point total (the lowest being Ryan O’Byrne, and come on now, if you can’t outscore him, you’re not fit for the NHL) out of any of the defensemen who managed to play more than 30 games (note: the two behind him in points have at least 10 fewer games under their belt).

by ronniech on Jul 1, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Komisarek. Outside of the Leafs games and four playoff games I haven’t seen much of Komisarek.

The point about his offensive potential is very interesting.

Hilarious

From cbs.sportsline.com (Wes Goldstein)

The Canadiens have lots of free-agent money to spend, but they seem to be intent on using it to become a modern-day version of the Smurfs. One of Montreal’s biggest problems in recent seasons has been a lack of size, so they’ve addressed that by trading and signing pipsqueak forwards in the last 24 hours.

...Komisarek..

..My computer doesn’t always allow me to reply directly to the thread I want, so if this pops up at the bottom, don’t get mad.

If you look closer at Komisarek’s offense…in the EJHL, when he was 16, at Michigan (averaged nearly a point per game as a soph), and in the AHL (top scoring rookie D man in 2/3 of a season there), you can see the potential. Also if you watch the guy on the ice.

He scored about as many even strength points as Andrei Markov, Sheldon Souray, and Mark Streit in the two seasons he played alongside them and played a full year. But Mike killed most of every powerplay (Montreal had few other defensemen who could) and never saw the ice during a man advantage, because they had to use the runts like Brisebois, Bouillon, Streit, Dandeneault, Gorges, etc. somewhere. Most “offensive” defensemen score anywhere from half to two thirds of their points with the man advantage. Komisarek hasn’t had a powerplay point in his career in Montreal so far, I don’t think. But he still scored around 20 points per season in his last two full seasons. Double that with PP time and you have Kubina’s 40 points. His even strength point totals in those two years are pretty close to what most of the big name offensive defensemen in the league managed.

This is from a guy who is 6-5, 245, and didn’t start playing ice hockey until he was 12 years old. On Long Island no less. Mike is 27, but he is far from his prime. Probably the equivalent of a 22 year old 6-0, 190 pounder who has been playing the game since he was 4 or 5 years old.

You guys got a bargain at the price..

Komisarek can score 40 points a season, given the opportunity, and still be one of the best shutdown defenders in the league. But whether he gets that opportunity remains to be seen. Hopefully Burke offered him the prospect, in addition to an extra 500k per season or whatever it was. As for Mike being a “cheap shot” artist, I don’t know where that is coming from. He has always been a standup guy in the games I’ve seen, and is squeaky clean off the ice.

by robert ethan on Jul 2, 2009 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

we got a shut down d-man for $4.5M a year...

not sure he’s a bargain, but I’d say his contract is reasonable.

As far as what Burke offered him, i don’t imagine it extended much beyond term and salary. Wilson’s the coach, and Burke, being the type of guy he is, will defer to his coach on who plays what. I’d agree on all the other points. I don’t think Komisarek was a cheap shot artist. He was dirty, nasty and a pain in the @$$ to play against. Now we don’t have to.

Thanks for the input though. Some great stats to chew on.

I’m fairly sure Burke will have speak to Wilson about the players he wants to target. Ultimately, Burke’s the man, but there’s no point in having a brilliant front office staff without listening to their opinions. So it’s possible that part of the sell was on how Wilson sees Komisarek as a player and how he intends to use him.

..Komisarek played 56 games in the AHL directly out of Michigan, before he joined the Habs. He was 20, and scored 30 points in 56 games. That was better than Ian White, Carlo Colavaccio, Dan Hamhuis, and a lot of other much smaller “offensive” defensemen managed in the league as 20 year old rookies. He scored more points as an NCAA sophomore (at the same age) as Jordan Leopold, J. M. Liles, and a lot of other “offensive” defensemen who are about half his size and played the game twice as long. It was only when he came to Montreal that he was regarded as strictly a stay at home crease clearer. I think he just got tired of it.

…do you mean Jason Blake, blurr?

I don’t see much similarity there. Blake is like 5-9, 165 pounds, and was over 30 before the Leafs even signed him. Not sure when he started playing hockey in his life, but having cancer in your mid 30s isn’t the best way to prolong it, obviously. I really don’t see your point.

by robert ethan on Jul 2, 2009 1:22 AM EDT reply actions

i do mean Jason Blake

he didn’t turn pro until he was 26. The argument for him being signed was that because he was so late to the NHL game, although he was 34, it was like signing a 29 year old…

time will tell regarding Komisarek, but considering he’s been playing a certain style for this long in the pros, the chances of him being re-imagined into an offensive dynamo are slim and none.

also, re the below (signed at 34 and with cancer,) i know that. I’m a Leafs fan.

by robert ethan on Jul 2, 2009 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

Blake started playing the game when he was a lot younger than Komisarek. In Minnesota. If you want to compare the two, how about this….
Komisarek as a 19 year old 6-4, 240 pound defenseman scored 30 points in 39 CCHA games.
Blake, as a 21 year old 5-10, 170 pound forward scored 32 points in 36 CCHA games.
