wow...

…I know the dood screwed up the RFA qualifying offers, but this feels like he’s been on his last rope for a while and despite assembling a solid young team (being terrible so long helps, see Pittsburgh). Tallon screw ups:
- signing Brian Campbell to an epically expensive contract, and he was barely even top 4 on defense.
- signing Huet without an escape plan for Khabibulin.
- RFA deals that have them floating over the cap, and no plan to get out by the season’s start???

But the khabibulin issue really helped them get as far as they did because when khabi went down in the playoffs they didn’t have some random goalie in net.

but now they have nothing in net, Huet alone will take them out of contention

the hawks got extremely lucky with their goaltending last year. if someone had grabbed khabi when he was put on waivers, or if he had gone to russia as was rumoured, they would have been f’d. huet was very mediocre.

by daoust on Jul 14, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Tallon’s mistakes really lie in the signing of Marian Hossa for 12 years. Now the new GM has to step in and find cap room because no one would take on a 12 year contract with someone who is already 30. This becomes even harder when you realize their captain Jonathon Toews and Patrick Kane both need contract renewals next year and will be seeking a much larger amount than what they are currently earning. Tallon should have only signed Hossa to a 1-2 year contract if at all so that they could keep the core of their team intact much like the Pens did.

More importantly both Patrick Kane and Jonathon Toews are RFAs next summer and Chicago has fuck all for cap space.

Leafs fans: this is a very very very important lesson in when to load up for a title run. Wait for your young guys to develop and lock them up before you start throwing money around.

Chicago’s window to win a cup might seriously close next summer. Think about that.

no question, they’ve buggered things up. kane and toews scoring 70 pts each while only earning $850,000 really helped to cover up the $11.5M they spent on goaltending and campbell’s ridiculous contract.

by daoust on Jul 14, 2009 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Philly sort of did the same thing. They had a great young core and they took on a pile of salary to make a run at the Cup that’s significantly shortened their window.

Meanwhile a team like Anaheim moved useful assets at their peak value and while they may not be a contender next year they’ve got a good young core and a ton of first round picks.

i’m not sure what philly’s up to. they’re over the cap, they have a tonne of big, long-term contracts (pronger, briere, timonen – all $6M+ cap hit for at least the next 4 years), and their goalie is ray emery on a 1-yr contract for $1.5M. clearly they’re going to have to spend more on goaltending next year, not to mention coburn’s an RFA next year as well. big problems…

by daoust on Jul 14, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Finding deals is key to winning – that Selanne for 1 mill contract really hwlped Anaheim the year they won. This is why having a deep well of prospects to draw from is key – you have to be ready to let older, more experienced players walk when they get too expensive, an be able to replace them with cheap young guys. I am very glad that Burke refised to overpau, especially for someone like Cammaleri who could be taking someone else’s sspot, when they’re younger and better. Campbell is untradeable so unless they stash him in the minors, I think he’ll be taking Keith’s place next year.

there’s some good ‘reporting’ in the actual article too…

They could resume now that the Leafs have added depth on defense, but if not, Burke said he will explore other options to upgrade an offense that was nearly as bad as the defense for Toronto.

Goals against – 30th. Goals for – 10th. Nearly as bad, for sure.

Regarding Schenn - What's the Consensus?

IIRC, there was some discussion early last season regarding Schenn: should he be sent back down, would it hamper his development to have him play in the NHL, would he hit the rookie wall, was he strong enough, etc.

I don’t get to see the Leafs but a few times a year (when they play the Caps), so I don’t have a good frame of reference to assess his development.

What’s the thoughts of you that see a lot of the Leafs? Did he acquit himself well throughout the season? What are your expectations from him this year.

Full disclosure: Caps fan here, but do like the Leafs.

by fat_daddyo on Jul 14, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He did well and his strength was above average. He was able to hold his own in fights and take out star players when they tried to go wide (if you do a quick youtube video search he laid claims to Ryan Smyth, Evgeni Malkin and Dvorak to name a few).

Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform?

by RapleSyrup on Jul 14, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did he acquit himself well throughout the season?

I’d say so. Well enough that people are talking about him being the future Captain. That’s the highest endorsment possible.

by general borschevsky on Jul 14, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea

He made stupid mistakes here and there but honestly, no worst then most of the blueliners. As most have pointed out, he’s only 19, so he’s going to get bigger and smarter with experience.

As for development going properly or being hindered, I honestly think its still too soon to tell.

Schenn really needs to work on his shot. That’s hands-down the worst part of his game.

As for keeping him in the NHL, the worst side of that was it burned one-year of his entry level contract. He’ll hit UFA status one year earlier, likely just when the Leafs are really competing for the big prize. As per the comments about Chicago earlier, this is something to keep an eye on.

I was one of those that thought Schenn should have been sent back down at the beginning of the season if not for development then to shelter him for an extra year before he becomes a RFA. However, he did not look out of place at all. Sure, he made some rookie mistakes but he has a very calm and poised demeaner. He didn’t make the same type of mistakes under pressure as a veteran like McCabe did.

I definitely think he can improve on his shot and I also look forward to him being more physical next year. Would love to see him take the body like he did on Malkin more often. Hopefully his bigger frame will smash some opponents through the glass.

I guess we’ll never know if starting him with the big club hindered his development or not but he sure looked damn good as one of the best defencemen we had (though that wasn’t exactly hard last year).

Finger?

The CBS article says something like: the three big new additions join a Leaf blue line that already has Schenn, Jeff Finger and Tomas Kaberle… Since when is Jeff Finger a notable on the Leafs blueline? I mean, I am one of those who thinks he did a good job in ont getting noticed too much, probably is paid too much, but whatever…but why is he in the same sentence as Schenn and Kaberle? Maybe there is an outside/objective view that he is a top four calibre guy?

From Behindthenet.ca

What about defensive forwards like John Madden and Jay Pandolfo who line up against the other team’s top line? Do they qualify as ‘strong opponents’?

Overall, Madden and Pandolfo have negative On/Off-Ice +/- ratings. A player who faced them would appear to have not faced strong competition. But keep in mind what it means to be a ‘defensive forward’ – it implies skill on only one side of the equation: goal-prevention. There is very little risk of allowing a goal when you’re facing a defensive line, as opposed to lining up across from Sidney Crosby. If Madden and Pandolfo also had among the best offensive skills in the NHL, they’d be superstars, as opposed to candidates for Defensive Forward of the Year.

Aww crap, I did a whole post about Leafs at the horse track and I didn’t even make a reference to Montreal Canadiens being shorter then jockeys.

If you guys are not happy with Savard, ship him to Toronto.
How he is not part of the Canadian Olympic team camp is beyond me. How does fuckin Dan Cleary make it or Andy McDonald make it and not Savard.

Not happy with Savard? hahahahahahahahahahaa…. hoooo boy.

Lucic made the camp, that was cool. I think Savard may have turned down the national team at some point in the past and now they’re being stubborn. It’s not like Canada is lacking in the center department.

Yeah

Since Gretzky came along playing in the Worlds has been a huge issue and he hasn’t been there that I recall.

And like you said, Canada has one or two kind of good centres.

Meh

He’s not going to the Olympics anyway so why bother? Better to look at guys that are actually on the bubble including this year’s candidates for the Rob Zamuner role (why God why?) to see if they can do the job.

I think he’ll end up getting Sakic’s now vacant spot.

Marc Savard is fucking filthy on the ice. I like watching him play because you can tell how far ahead of everyone he’s thinking.

Here's an idea

this is complete speculation but I’ll bet that the Bowmans was Campbell out of Chicago ASAP. Is there a way we could swallow his salary (I doubt Burke would be willing to though) and plunder some of their young talent to our side in the meantime? It’d end up being a massive package, but I could see it happening. Thing is, if we got Campbell and Burke intended to play him, we’d also be shipping out Kaberle – and I think Campbell is a downgrade talent wise, even if he makes almost twice as much money. But this would be the situation Burke talks about – overpaying for the same skillset that Kabby brings, if we want to move Kaberle.
But such a move would probably see us able to take on at least 2 young fowards, and maybe a draft pick, and not deplete us skill-wise too badly.

to be clear, I think Kaberle would be traded in a separate deal, and we’d send one of our stay at home D to Chicago.

Campbell is too much money for too long to consider as part of swallowing salary unless it’s only to stash him in the AHL.

how many years?

I can’t remember.
But we are just about the only organization in the NHL that has deep enough pockets to pay someone, what, $7.8 mill to play in the AHL.

$7.14M

Through 2016.

If it gets us assets it’s a thought but Campbell’s not exactly a chump. He’s not the kind of player Burke would leave in the AHL.

that's

the difficulty. But if we get some young assets that are relatively cheap and highly skilled then I could see it happening. But at the same time, 7 years is a loooooong time especially when it’s uncertain whether or not the cap will go down substantially any time soon.

I don’t know, I highly doubt it would happen, but it’s something that is interesting to explore. Our D could be:

Komisarek – Campbell
Schenn – Beauchemin
White-Exelby

Assuming we give them Finger.

I think he would play terribly under the pressure of the Toronto media. In his last year as a Sabre when he was dealing with the contract, he looked like absolute hell. I think he would buckle under the pressure.

Karina’s comment just got me thinking about the recent trade rumours re: Leafs and Hawks.

Does Tallon’s firing mean that those reports were essentially buffalo chips, or have the Hawks actually fired their GM in the middle of trade talks with the Leafs? If so, what does that suggest about the future of those talks – presumably, Chicago management was either happy they were ongoing, but royally pissed off that nothing was concluded (=Tallon fired) or incredibly pissed that Tallon was even thinking of making a trade with the Leafs (=Tallon fired). I suppose a third possibility remains: Chicago management was ambivalent about the Leafs trade….but that kind of takes us back to the newspaper reports being full of shite, no?

Thoughts? Anyone? Bueller?

well

from Havlat’s Twitter comments, it seems like Tallon wasn’t necesserily making the decisions there anyways, so it’s possible they could continue with Bowman now that Tallon’s out.

Well

The rumours came from a report from Al Cimiglia (I think it was) where he explicitly said that he had heard nothing at all from his sources. He then speculated about what deals might make sense and some people ran with that but at the heart it was my understanding that there was no contact between the teams whatsoever.

As popular as it is to wait with bated breath over Chicago’s problem with re-signing all their young stars, I still think we’re all being a little premature here. Before it comes to losing Kane, Toews, or Keith, Chicago will do everything they can to trade/waive as many players as they can in order to ensure keeping the big three for a long time. If, however, Chicago is in the same mess next April, then yes, we have seen the ’Hawks revival come to a bitter and swift end. But something tells me that Chicago will sign the Big Three to all multi-year extensions, depth and balance be damned.
