Considering I estimated 3 years, $8 million, I’m pretty happy with this.
We have something resembling a No. 1 centre now (though we’d prefer he be our #2). Unclench everybody.

He put up 50 points last year…for a young guy who they expect to improve, and to log important minutes, I think this is a fair deal.
It also means the Poni is due for a serious raise, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

yeah
not bad. Would’ve preferred him at $2.5 mill, but the Leafs don’t need to scoff at $400,000.

Leafs won’t get within sniffing distance of Hodgson.
Best case: Michel Oullet and a marginal prospect
Worst case: Hordichuk and a 3rd round pick.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
I wasn’t really kidding with the Hordichuk/Oullet offer.
Kubina only made $750K more than Kaberle, was also limited by a NTC, and had similar stats. He netted Exelby.
I think people are going to be monumentally disappointed in the return for Kabs.

Also you’re forgetting, Vancouver is in dire need of a puck moving D man right now. They also just signed the Sedin’s for a relatively long term deal, and they are making a push for the cup.
I could see them maybe being willing to part with Hodgson if it gets them Kaberle, especially considering he comes so cheap for what he brings to the table.
no
I can pretty much Guarantee that we won’t get a sniff at Hodgson. Grabner will be included, I am 100% sure. Not sure what else – a 2nd rounder maybe? (Though I’d prefer a 1st)

Depends on what the return is, I wouldn’t necessarily say that Hodgson is “untouchable” as far as I am concerned when you’re running a team no player should truly be untouchable.
BUT he would be as close to as untouchable as there is. I just think that given Vancouver’s need for a good solid puck moving D man, and how cheaply Kaberle will come, that you have to at least entertain offers that might include him.
I’m not suggesting a Kaberle for Hodgson straight up scenario. Maybe it involves a pick coming from Toronto and a bottom tier proespect coming back from Vancouver as well. There are lots of options here.
Although realistically, I am sure Hodgson is not in play here.

Well to be honest, the JFJ/Quinn mindset was more of trading picks for aging veterans well past their prime.
This would be trading a pick for an almost surefire prospect, and consdering the fact that the draft (even in the first round) is almost completely a crapshoot, I don’t see how that could be a bad thing.
Although the only way I would make that deal is if the pick was top 10 protected.

We all know how that ended.
yeah but

Schneider? I don’t know. They don’t currently have an NHL backup, and they may want to give him a shot at that before trading him.

it's tough to say
they’re straddling. They seriously need an upgrade on D if they are going to win now. I could see them giving up picks, and a roster player, and Grabner, but I’m not sure about Schneider, until they have Luongo’s name on a contract.

I’m thinking Bobby Luo is holding out because of his desire to win now.
kind of what i’m getting at here. Till may be on to something with the possibility of Vancouver dangling some highly rated prospects for help now that could 1) push them over the hump and 2) convince Luongo to resign long term.
just speculating, thinking out loud here…

but they’re really close to the cap, they need some of that cheap youth to come in and contribute if they want to win.
But honestly, after Schroeder, Hodgson, Schneider and Grabner, they basically have no prospects.

According to nhlscap...
Our cap was a shade over $50M. (That includes Orr and Komisarek, but not the Kubina trade)
Add $2.9M for Grabbo, add $1.4M for X, and subtract $5M for Exelby.
Now our cap is just a shade under $50M. So Gustavsson, and… ?

a) We got a Pronger-ish haul for him (Not that we’d get what the Ducks got for Pronger, but that a GM will go insane for 5 minutes and wildly overpay)
b) We re-signed him, cause FFS the D around him right now is tailor-made for his game. Everyone else focuses on defence, he QBs the PP

Bozak signed a 2 year deal and is only waiver exempt this season.
I have no idea how Bozak’s game will translate at the NHL level. I fully expect, given his incentives, that he’ll be given a shot as the fourth centre. Shelter him from the tough minutes, give him a bit of PP time, and ease him into the game.
If he can work into the top six, that’s fantastic, but I think the first little while is going to be about acclimation and development.

Can I just go on record here...
I know we signed Grabovski which means our offense won’t be totally atrocious…
but we still don’t really have a true #1 NHL centre at this point.
I really don’t think highly of komisarek – but I like him more than Garnet Exelby.
I also would like Burke to stop signing craptastic tough guys that can’t do anything other than pummel the opposition into the ice. It’s one thing to go after guys like Beauchemin, Moen, or even Ian Laperriere, who are tough as nails and still provide ACTUAL hockey. It’s another thing entirely when you’re handing out contracts to guys that likely end up in the ECHL on the off chance that they might turn into the next Wade Belak.
On another note, why is NOBODY ON THE FREAKING PLANET DISCUSSING Stålberg?
Everyone talks about Bozak and Hanson like they’re the only guys we signed out of the NCAA… we actually DRAFTED Stålberg, and he produced more points than either of those guys, and he was top 10 in the Hobey Baker award voting… like seriously… how do you guys forget about this crap?
Man I’m glad I’m around to beat you all over the head with it from time to time.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Stalberg
I have not forgotten about him, LD is going to marry him.
Also, a #1 center is a hard thing to find – especially in free agency. Who’s really available to fit that role??

Was there a “true” NHL center out there that Burke would even consider? Last years’ highest earning free agent centers are Sundin, Sakic, and Koivu, all of whom are 35+ and way too old for a rebuilding club. Cammalleri is technically a center, but Burke sure as hell wasn’t interested in him and neither am I for 6 million. Then Brendan Morrison? Jason Williams? Tyler Arnason?
The free agent class wasn’t great, and for whatever reason I doubt Burke’s going to pull a #1 center out of somebody via trade. I just don’t know what Leafs fans were expecting from this offseason. Actually I think I know what you were, based on your blog, but still.
Madden
who signed with the Hawks would have, for this team, been a perfect #1.
pointless now, just saying, guys were out there. Madden is also tough as nails, kill penalties, hits and can fly…
goals, not so much. but they’re overrated i hear….

I would've liked Madden
but he is NOT a #1 center

for THIS team, he’d have worked. Especially as a stop gap. I’m not buying the whole “playoffs or bust” crap Burke is spewing anymore…

He never said playoffs or bust, you did. He stated his goal was to make the playoffs, and that every player on this team’s goal should be to win the Stanley Cup. Just because something’s your goal doesn’t mean you’re going to achieve it right away.
Burke was stating the obvious, that just because our club will be bad doesn’t mean that his players aren’t expected to compete and play as if they’re going to win. The fact that the fans and media ran away with a comment like that doesn’t mean he’s somehow been lying this whole time.
as an ardent supporter of Burke
i’d think you’d know my implications. I apologize.
Having spent the last 48 hours defending (what feels like) every single comment i’ve made here, i’m beginning to edit where i shouldn’t.
firstly. Right then and there, yes i said “playoffs or bust.” Burke did say at the end of the season that he was pissed we missed the playoffs and that “We want to be in the playoffs next year. It’s that simple.”" So, semantics being what they are, no he did not say “playoffs or bust.” He certainly didn’t say wait and see, or we’re going to build slowly. He did say, “We want to be in the playoffs next season.”
Admittedly, he expounds upon that thought by stating it’s difficult to tell at the end of the season whether or not it’s a realistic goal. That does not change the fact that it’s his goal, but it does give him some lawyeristic wiggle room to not make himself look silly should the goal not be obtained. Here, is where I stand by Burke. As a fan of this team, I agree it should always be our goal to make the playoffs, every year. To what degree are we willing to sacrifice and pay for that goal is entrusted to our GM. Brian Burke gets paid the big bucks because he knows how to build a team. I have no doubt in that.
What I do doubt is the sincerity with which he expressed his goal. I’m not sure there’s a single person (beyond eyebleaf maybe…) that believes with the moves Burke has been able to accomplish, that we’re any closer to being a playoff team. Tougher, bigger, nastier. Absolutely. Playoff bound? Not so much. And, that’s OK. I don’t fault Burke for not getting his number one targets signed, in the Sedins. I question the logic in his approach, but I have the benefit of hindsight, so we’ll call it an honorable attempt to get closer to his goal. Plan b, if what we’ve accomplished is in fact that, does not move us closer to that goal for next season (his targeted time frame, need i remind you.)
So, long story short, Brian Burke is making moves that he believes will make this team a playoff team this coming season. Or at least, if I believed what he said, he is. And, I’m not really feeling it right now.

It all depends on how hard you’re reading into that statement. Burke wants to be in the playoffs. He also wants all his draft picks to become roster players, while all the other prospects bust. He wants to make the playoffs without sabotaging the future success of the club, and he’s managed to not trade away any prospects or draft picks so far (something Cliff did many times by this point in the season).
If you think Burke went out and made a promise with that statement I’ll tell you you’re wrong, and I made a point to say so in a blog post at the end of the season if you’ll check my profile. If you think Burke honestly believes he hasn’t improved this club’s chances of winning, both this year and into the future, I would also say you’re wrong. Burke believed we needed physicality to win, and he added it while making the club younger. If that’s actually a component that will help us I’m not sure either, I’m too used to watching our butter-soft team get rolled and I haven’t paid nearly enough attention to guys like Exelby, Orr, and Stuart.
But Burke hasn’t been disingenuous with his statements. Paul Maurice guaranteed that we’d make the playoffs. Burke just said he wants to, that every player on the club should have it as a goal, and that it’s embarrassing when we don’t make it. The difference should be clear, and if you think it’s double-speak then I don’t know what to say.
we'll agree to disagree
and i think i’ve been Burkian enough in my comments to state my position and leave enough wiggle room to not look the fool.
i made no absolute statements about desired goals or expectations. he did. i like them.
are we getting closer to them? time will tell.

Man I’m glad I’m around to beat you all over the head with it from time to time.
We don’t mention Stålberg individually for the same reasons we barely mention Bozak and Hanson: We’ve never/barely seen them play. Sure, Stålberg did some good work in the NCAAs and you’re pretty jazzed but personally I’ve never seen him play. Lots of bums have been Hobey Baker winners/nominees. He’s one more shot at a good player.

Oh and I ride a bicycle at this point...
and I like the TTC… buses are awesome first thing in the morning.
Although I drive a pretty sweet Nissan Altima when I actually have to leave the city.
My finacee used to drive a civic but her back right speaker sounded like it was passing gas whenever the music had remotely any bass at all. It was also rusted to hell and back… so we ditched it for a Toyota Corolla, which we then sold when we moved into the city.
