Is Burke Working On Blockbuster Deal? | Toronto Sports Media Blog
TSM has heard a few things that there may be a three team deal involving the Leafs, Sharks and Hawks in the works.

I’m sure this will be in the FTB tomorrow, but I was hoping to get a jump on speculaton tonight.
Cam Barker is an RFA, which I find interesting.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Marleau is the one on the move from the Sharks.

I’d like to think something like this could happen. Maybe Ryan Clowe or Torrey Mitchell…but Marleau seems to be the right salary amount to dump. Does Kaberle make sense on the Sharks or Hawks (puck moving defensemen already in place)

Kaberle doesn’t seem to fit at all. If the Sharks want to do some salary dumping, I could see us being involved, but I have no idea what they’d be interested in. Maybe some bit parts from our D, and a good prospect (Tlusty?)

yeah, Kabs is no fit. I imagine the excess d-men seem possible for this kind of move. Finger/MvR/Stralman maybe? and Tlusty going might cause some Leaf fans to explode!

If it’s Kabby for Marleau straight up, that makes sense, but as TSM says in the article 3way deals just never happen anymore…

Kaberle would be a fit for the Sharks though. I have little idea what they can offer (I’m not convinced the Sharks will move Marleau), but as for Chicago, Byfuglien, Brouwer, or Ladd would be a few players they’ll move to relieve their salary cap and open up spots amongst their forward ranks.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Sharks are in the same spot themselves. I think they’re in the neighborhood of $51M or $52M in salary already.
If they take on a Kabby, although cheap, they’ll need to ship something back with at least equal value if they want to leave any wiggle room.

San Jose is tight up on the cap, with lots of d-men signed to contracts (just like the Leafs!) and not many forwards. $5 mill to sign 5-7 forwards, including Ryan Clowe and Torrey Mitchell.

There was a link somewhere that the Sharks were working on a multi-year deal with Clowe, so we’ll see if they’re going to move him. Cheechoo is someone I’m looking at as a definite trade piece.

Heh, actually I was thinking Cheechoo would be one of the pieces for Heatley, since I’m under the impression that San Jose is talking trade to clear space for Heatley.

honestly they could trade Marleau straight up for him…and dump the Cheech on the Leafs for Stajan!

Marleau would skate circles around Spezza. Patty gets a bad rap, and Wilson did have some justifiable beefs with the guy, but he’s night and day compared to giggles.
sens fans would crap their pants when they realize just how one dimensional he is next to Marleau.

This is precisely why I feel that Marleau is going nowhere. If San Jose really wanted to get rid of him, they would have offered Marleau for Heatley straight up a while go. I believe Marleau also has a NTC, so it’s unlikely he’ll waive it to come to Toronto due to his contentious relationship with Ron Wilson (Marleau can’t stand Wilson), as alluded by you.

ah darn
I forgot about the Marleau/Wilson thing. I will now proceed to stop hoping to se ehim in a Leafs jersey anytime soon.

Pavelski anyone?
He’s a top 6 center buried behind Thornton and Marleau. He plays well enough to force the Sharks to shift Patty to wing.
Also, he’s awesome. And a yank to boot. He’ll fit right in with our Polish contingent…

he’s bottom 6, not a points guy. Just a smart energy line guy.
He’s not big, but he’s fast, so he hits with a lot of speed coming from him. He’s smart and responsible enough without the puck to have seen some PK time, despite how young he is and how deep the Sharks are..
short enough?

I tried reading up on Hanson somemore to try an d get a pulse for where Burke sees him. The only quote i’ve found is that Burke thinks Hanson is a Blake Wheeler type. Top 6 banger with the potential to score goals through sheer force of will (ok, those are now my words, but the Blake Wheeler is Burke…)
So, if he sees him as a top 6 guy, then someone like Poni, Stemps, Stajan or Blake needs to go.

The Sharks need to do something. They’ve choked too many times. Anaheim destroyed them this year on the back of prime time goal tending and having a big time forward who actually turned up.
I’d be very surprised if both Marleau and Thornton returned to the Sharks.

I Just Took A Look At Chicago's Roster on nhlscap.com
They have 9 players listed as RW’s
Hossa
Sharp
Kane
Byfuglien
Skille
Kopecky
Burish
Brouwer
Versteeg
Kane, Skille & Burish all have one year left, and Brouwer & Versteeg are currently RFAs.
Given the Leafs serious hole on RW, I could see one of Skille, Burish or Brouwer coming to us, along with maybe some salary from San Jose (assuming that’s the team making room for Heatley)
Resident Capologist
Byfuglien, Brouwer and Burish would be my guesses.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Buf makes a little more coin, closer to Kabby dollars, ($3M cap hit)
Ben Eager would be nice. LW, but also an RFA. 25 yrs young. Brouwer, RFA @ 23. those are guys i can get behind…

I’m going by what pieces Chicago would be most willing to move in any trade. Buff is going to make serious dough due to his so-called potential (Western Conference’s version of Milan Lucic), and so would Brouwer. Burish is a physical energy player, so maybe Chicago finds him valuable like you said, but he’s due for a raise. Ladd is another forward I can see getting moved.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
This Hossa deal has really handcuffed them.
Any deal has to see the Leafs take on a more salary than the others and then that Kubina deal looks better…

Cheechoo, Erhoff, and prospect for Dany Heatley. I don’t see how San Jose and Chicago make great trade partners for salary relief, and I have no idea why Toronto just doesn’t deal with each of them separately.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Toronto likely needs to get something of value + cap relief from one to have something to trade the other. If this scenario is close to being true.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Perhaps the “blockbuster” is between San Jose and Ottawa, while the Leafs and Chicago all are involved because Toronto becomes the team to dump salary while the Leafs get draft picks and/or forwards. Otherwise, I can’t make sense of San Jose and Chicago actually giving up anything of value to each other because they both can’t add substantial salary.
