Moore’s not coming back? Woooooohooooooooo!

What's wrong with Moore

I say this seriously because Moore seems like a decent 3rd line center. (Although he was probably paid too much).

I’m sure The whole Moore-Burke thing was awkward from the get-go, so this isn’t very surprising.

I, too.. But he’ll find a home!

Burke kind of takes a flamethrower to bridges.. Antro and Moore both perhaps got short shrift from Burke..

Moore for a second rounder? That was the best move Burke’s made so far.

I hated Moore for thinking he was more important than he actually was. When a player turns down a contract extension because of greed and then gets screwed over because of their own pride, they deserve it.

you mean

when a player tries to maximize his return for putting up career high numbers and the GM decides to cut and run, the player is greedy.

unless, you like the player, then the GM’s an idiot.

When a player gets career numbers and the GM knows that they are due to increased playing time and numbers that the GM rightly assumes will not be attained again and won’t even be achieved with a better team, if that player overvalues his worth trading him for the future is the best move.

but, if you already liked the player, then you’re not a fan of the move.

i like the return we got, but I also like guys like Moore who play heart and soul hockey. He was one of the most consistent and reliable guys we had last year. His first time getting that kind of ice time, and he responds accordingly.

He put up similar numbers to guys like Umberger and Sykora. Both making more than he asked. Just saying his request wasn’t that far off market value.

The money he wanted was the problem. Never the effort.

by PPP on Jul 21, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t blame him for that for a bunch of reasons. One, might not have been him, was probably his agent. Two, who knows when he might have the chance to get a payday like that. C) He isn’t even close to the first pro athlete who wanted more than they were worth. Yes, it seems like he got caught, but a few hundred thousand probably means much more to him than it does to those other dicks that hold out for a few hundred thousand when that equals negligible increases in their overall salary. Exhibit A: The Ryan Smyth debacle (to whom again, I don’t blame Smyth, but the difference there was what, 500K out of 6 million? C’mon.)

by lordosis on Jul 21, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I just like seeing the team walk away for once. Well, twice if you count the Smyth debacle where they have spent the last 3 years hilariously trying to replace what they gave away.

Really though I can’t give Moore the benefit of the doubt based on the mercenary nature of his brother.

There’s no way in Hell Steve Moore deserves $19.5 million for the incident.

You're making it personal.

What his brother asks for for having his career ended is totally unrelated. In any case, it is not unreasonable to ask for at all. If he had gone on to a 10-year career, there’s not reason to believe he would not have made about 10million ($1M for a solid 3rd-liner is not unreasonable). The other half is a reasonable amount for having your neck broken. No matter what anyone says about what he did to Naslund, etc etc, no one deserves to have their neck broken. If you take into account lost earnings and pain and suffering, it is a reasonable number.

On a totally unrelated note: Domenic Moore showed that, like many other NHL players, when given playing time and decent line-mates, he could produce. There is nothing wrong with him asking for what he asked for. The reason Burke was right not to give it to him was that he knew Moore would not be getting that kind of opportunity again—not because, if given the opportunity, he couldn’t do it. He didn’t play the kind of minutes he did in TO when he was with the Sabres. Put him on a line with Roy and see if he doesn’t produce.

I am not saying the Leafs should have resigned him at any cost. Wallin is likely an upgrade, if he pans out. But you are making it personal and that is not fair.

by Leaf in Habland on Jul 22, 2009 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not going to get into a debate over the number here. There are many factors including the fact that the Avalanche admitted that they wouldn’t have resigned him, the timing of when the lawsuit was brought on and what pain and suffering damage his parents “suffered”

by furcifer on Jul 22, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

You are right, it is hard to come up with an exact number, and there are other factors, but how can you, with all that uncertainty, decide that the number he did pick is so wild as to discredit his brother’s reputation in contract negotiation?

by Leaf in Habland on Jul 22, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

It was somewhat tongue in cheek

i would say

go have your neck broken, and we’ll see how much money you think your life is worth.

I’m with LiH here. it’s a non-starter in the D-Moore contract issue. Steve’s perceived transgressions were nowhere near as bad as his supposed “punishment” for them.

He has every right to ask for the money for what he’s been through.

i think the money asked for is perfectly in line with the perpetrator, say it was a Hollweg or what not who caused the damage, a lower NHL’er who makes less cash, then it would be high, the financial hit should be punishment to the one who caused the infraction as well as compensation for the act commited

That’s when Moore “jumped” the proverbial shark. Would’ve loved to keep him around, but a second rounder eases the pain.

I liked Moore and thought Toronto was a perfect fit for him but at the end of the day Moore needed the Leafs much more than the Leafs needed him. Players like him are a dime a dozen. Opportunities to be a 3rd line center on a NHL team, however, are not.

I have no real issue with Moore. Rescued from the waiver wire, he got the opportunity here to become a full time NHLer for really the first time. He took advantage of it, which was a boon to the Leafs. He was hard working plugger, popped in the odd goal, made space with his top level speed, could take a faceoff, made the guys around him not seem like putzes. When he looked for that raise, he went for it, not many opportunities in a player’s life to move off into the multi-millions per season list, especially a guy like him. Burke said no, Moore stood his ground, so Burke got a 2nd rounder out of him.

All told, we got a season and a half or so of him. Some goals, some assists, he turned Blake around to the good for nothing more than a gamble. Now we have a 2nd round pick, not bad. Not epic either.

Moore’s going to find a spot, maybe not for as much as he wanted, he’ll have to swallow his pride and take advantage of any opportunity he gets.

Grabbing Moore was JFJ’s best move. Flipping him for a 2nd rounder at the deadline is, so far, Burke’s best move.
