A Maple Leaf Wednesday
And nothing new to report. However, chances are, that rumor mill will get cranking soon enough. The Kaberle trade watch is still on, and regardless of which side of the fence you sit on the issue, it doesn't change the fact that the deadline on the open window, closes soon enough.
I watched Hamlet 2 and Death Race last night. That's a strange double header of film, let me tell you. Still Steve Coogan is hysterical, and Jason Statham apparently only does movies that require him to drive a car really fast, with ridiculously attractive women. Can't say I blame him...
Death Race - Official Trailer HD (via DeathRace2008)
- Steve has more on the repercussions of the recent Deveaux signing also a German Maple Leafs' at Olympic camp!
- TSM takes a look at the insanity surrounding the upcoming Spezza wedding.
- and has the latest on the Marlies coaching vacancy, and scratches another top 6 forward off the list.
- Wrap Around Curl says love is not for sale, but fandom may have a price. She's also quite the onomatopoeia junkie.
- Loser Domi takes us on a trip back in time to when we were all 15 years younger...
- The Other Vatican invites you to take a seat and hear the state of the rebuild.
- Pal Hal Pall takes on the Ottawa media, and if you're not careful, he'll take on you to!
- Puck Daddy has more on the ongoing Phil Kessel saga. Is he a really good, soon to be great, player, or merely a good player having a great contract year?

in game and interview are two entirely different things.
as far as Roenick, Roy and Shanahan, one’s retired and the other two will be soon enough. roenick is a great sound bite. Shanny is hit and miss for me.
I think about interviews with guys like Crosby, Iginla, Zetterberg, Drury, Briere, and a hundred others I could name that are just painful. By and large, NHL players are not fans of the interview process, and quite frankly I could care less.
Did Kessel score 30+ goals a season after being diagnosed with cancer? Did he do it all after just turning 21? Is 21 the new 31, and if so, does that mean he’s peaked?
Kessel is going to be a very good, possibly great, player for a long time. Boring off the ice or not.

His shooting percentage is an outlier so far, he was benched in last season’s playoffs (not a good sign), he dropped in his draft year precisely because of his attitude problems, and even an opposition GM noted that he’s good but maybe not great. At the money he’d command he needs to be great.

Kabby was benched once.
as far as the money. Great players are being paid $6 or $7M plus.
$4.5 to $5M for a 30 goal sniper? That’s a bargain in my books. And he’s only going to get better. You keep forgetting how young he is.

Huh?
What about Carter?
The question is whether he’s a 35 goal sniper or a 20 goal sniper. That’s a big difference when you are not only committing $5M per year but the long-term contract it’ll require and giving up 3 draft picks.
I’m just saying it’s a gamble.

$994,434 – $1,506,717 – 2010 3rd round pick

$3,013,433 – $4,520,150 – 2010 1st round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
$4,520,151 – $6,026,867 – 2010 1st round pick, 2010 2nd round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
$6,026,868 – $7,533,584 – 2010 1st round pick, 2011 1st round pick, 2010 2nd round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
Over $7,533,584 – 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 1st round picks.

Agreed. Offer sheets are worthless for the players at this level, a complete waste of Burke’s time.

Trade yes, Offer Sheet no…Picks not worth losing …a trade for him isn’t bad, but I’m not sure giving up Kaberle interdivisionally is a wise course to dig him out of Boston. I say 4years at 5 to 5.5 per, tops…I think they’d take White and a prospect or two…which seems steep, but sometimes you need to take a calculated gamble

2 questions about Kessel
1. Is he the straw that stirs the drink or is he benefitting from playing with one of the league’s premier set-up men in Savard?
His goals for 60 nearly drops in half when he’s not on the ice with Savard (from 1.246 to 0.782)
2. Are his numbers sustainable?
As many have pointed out, last year’s shooting percentage was a big outlier for him. If he reverts to his norm he’s a 25 goal man.

I’m not sure I don’t want a 23 year old who can score 25-30 goals on the Leafs. Youth playing together could develop that core we all wish we had. It’s all about deciding how to pay a kid with potential for more good years after showing the league just one.

Jeff O’Neill put up consecutive 20 goal seasons for $1.5M and was booed out of town.
Are the additional five goals really worth an extra $3M/year and the Leafs best puck moving defenceman?

Bozak’s on a one-year deal.
It’s a nice problem to have, but if he shows the potential to be a top centre the Leafs will have to pay-up as the cap begins to constrict and as White, Stralman, Kulemin, Hanson and Mitchell also hit RFA status.

That contract offer for Kovalchuk is the absolute max salary possible under the CBA (20% of the cap).
I also think if any one man is stupid enough to offer a contract like that, Waddell is that man.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
To be honest I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth paying for truly elite talent. Assume Kessel is a 35 goal guy for $5M. Is it worth paying a 45-50 goal guy $8M? That’s ten goals. Surely turning one of your $1M lower end forwards into a $4M guy would also net you the same improvement in goals for.
There’s a point where you’re paying a lot more money for not a lot more production.

It’s ridiculous to think that with possible reduction in the cap, that a team would be willing to handcuff themselves with this kind of contract.
1 player @ $11.2 mil … he is only 4% of the players you need to ice and he is getting 20% of your payroll!
Straight up to get into the playoffs you need to score around 250 goals and allow around 220. Kovalchuk scored 43 goals last year. That’s 17.2 percent of the goals a team needs and he wants 20% of their total payroll?
Important note: even if Kovalchuk scored 50 goals and made the 20% thing line up… you need to pay goaltenders and defense to keep goals out of your net.
Pension Plan Puppets*
* Blog contains less than 2% puppet content by weight.
Well put man! Kovalchuk can burry with the best of them, but like you said, last time I checked you needed someone to keep the puck out of your own net too. As great as he may be, he isn’t going to make up 20% of your team in all three zones. At his best, he’s giving you 20% in one.
At his best he’s giving you 17.2% in one.
Pension Plan Puppets*

I’m with ya, I think Kovalchuk is one of the top 3-5 pure goal scorers in the league, but not only are you drastically overpaying for one guy (doesn’t matter WHO it is), but you’re also making it next to impossible to build a team that’s going to have any kind of reasonable depth.
Ilya Kovalchuk is the NHL’s Dominique Wilkins.
Explosive, exciting, obscenely talented.
Pretty much playing by himself on bad teams.
His talents are often overlooked because of his team’s relative obscurity.
Reputation as a ball/puck hog.
Played his whole career in Atlanta.
Resident Capologist
I think that’s what Riseborough was trying to do. He let a few guys looking for big deals walk (Rolston, Demitra) and backfilled by playing the averages.
From an old Globe article:
Risebrough believes that the key to success in the salary-cap era is spreading out risk. So he did that in the off-season, taking the $11.75-million that it cost other clubs to sign Rolston, Demitra and Mark Parrish and spreading it out (plus $1-million more) among five players who have outscored the departed.
Yeah, I know: Risebrough got fired but it doesn’t make this approach any less interesting…

I like my idea a lot less knowing the Risebrough tried to use it.

Columbus too. They need Nash for marketing/business purposes but Howson has made a number of really smart moves to “pool the risk”

The Wild also hired that advanced statistics guy I wonder if that played into Riseborough’s decision.

Anytime you can get 83% of Ovechkin’s stats for 120% of the cap hit, you have to make that move.
It’s criminal that Waddell still has a job.

It’s solely because of the ownership litigation from what I understand.

As an owner, you have to realise that one guy can’t bring you a cup. It might even be worth it for them to trade him and get a shit load of other assets then to dump that kind of cash on a single player. I know hes flashy and I know he brings in fans, but fans will only pay to see a score a higlights reel goal and then lose 5-1 so many times before it looses it’s luster.
The problem is that there is no one owner just two groups arguing about who owns the team so neither side is really in control.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Ah yes, a problem us Leafs fans are all too familiar with. It’s unfortunate for the Thrashers, they’ve got some good pieces and seemed to be starting to put it all together. Here’s to hoping that this is just interwebz musings.
Birdwatchers Anonymous has some great information on the situation if anyone is interested.

In 1985, Jim Devellano told Mike Ilitch that NCAA free agents were available just for cash. Ilitch asked how many were NHL ready and Devellano said 7 to 10. Ilitch told his GM to go out and sign all of them.
That’s an owner who’s committed to winning.
And that’s how Detroit landed Adam Oates.

Man talk about lame, I went to ESPN.com and saw they had an article on James van Riemsdyk. I went to read it but I need to be an ESPN Insider.
No big deal, since I subscribed to ESPN the magazine last month for $2 for the year precisely so I could read insider articles. Today was the day I’d activate my account for great success.
Logged in to ESPN, filled out my magazine info to activate my account… and got to the credit card screen, where they want CC info so that when my subscription ends they can charge me $3.33 a month. Eh, no thanks. I don’t want to read EJ Hradek that bad.

Wow, only took two comments in that TSN piece to work an article about a Hawks forward into a slam on the Leafs – they’re slipping.
Bright shining teams with young cores just a year or two ago, the window is starting to close in Chicago and Philly already.
This is why I’m not worried about Toronto not having “a first line”. We’ll develop one and keep our window of success open longer than three seasons.

that’s what Chicago did…Toews and Kane, homegrown.
they had Havlat as their top 6 forward FA signing, but he’s gone and they’re still in tight with the cap…

Uh huh and the Chicago went crazy signing UFAs and now the future of Kane and Toews along with Chicago’s chance at making a run are in doubt.

We were 10th in the league in scoring last season. Antropov wasn’t THAT valuable to us, Kaberle only played 57 games and I’d like to see what a healthy Hagman can do in 82 games (22g, 20a in 65 games). I understand the need for the ‘top 3’ player, but I think that we’ve got some coming through the woodwork soon enough. Patience is a virtue.

So I was watching old classic Leaf games on Leafs TV today. I found out Kerry Fraser’s most prized possession…an autographed stick from Wayne Gretzky.
Mother fucker.
