[Justin] Pogge's a good kid, but it just didn't work out for him in Toronto. I assured him I would find him somewhere to play this year.
Brian Burke speaking yesterday at the announcement of a partnership between Bruce Power and MLSE.
Colour me absolutely stunned that Brian Burke would announce that he is actively trying to move Justin Pogge and that no one in the Toronto media would report it.

Well, that’s my thought. Where the hell is he going to play if not for the Marlies? Who the hell could possibly want Pogge?

They have a couple of young guys already unless they need a bargain basement back-up to give those two more time in the AHL but I seem to recall them being pretty ready to go.

Even better...
…Pogge, Finger, Van Ryn, Kadri, and Schenn for Ovechkin and Varlomov. That would be the day.

Thanks for joining new guy.

After the game, the Pens called and offered Crosby and Malkin for Schenn. Told them to call back when they were willing to offer fair value.

Snow does seem to be signing a lot of extra goalies. He knows how it feels to be an unwanted goalie in the league.
Also, maybe we could trade White to the Island for someone…
Just so we can refer to it as ’Snow’s White’ trade

Did I hear somewhere that he was impossible to coach? Maybe Franky Allaire already had a few discussions with him and they realized Pogge was just blowing him off. Just speculation on that one, but who knows what the guy is like?
Burke loves guys with a strong work ethic and he really loves being in control. If Pogge gave him the impression that he doesn’t want to work within Burke’s structure, that would be the end of him.

The thing is…why can’t both play on the Marlies? Is this request coming from Pogge? Does he think that there is a club with a more wide-open goaltending situation?
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
i don’t think we’ll ever know.
if it’s coming from Pogge, then good riddance.
it it’s Burke’s prerogative, then as leaf fan stuck in ottawa says, perhaps they’ve seen something in him unfixable…
not gonna speculate myself. obviously, he’s not going to get much of anything in return.

by theothervatican on Jul 23, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Not sure what value you’d get in a trade for him, so I would still like to see what Pogge can accomplish under Allaire’s tutelage this year, but obviously Burke and his staff have seen something that they don’t think can be overcome.
seems so
which is unfortunate. But at least Burke treats players well, and will see he goes somewhere he has a chance. Still, makes me sad.

It’s unfortunate, but I don’t think that Pogge will even see much of Allaire. Allaire will have his work cut out for him helping Toskala and Gustavsson, not to mention the fact that Reimer will probably command more attention even on the minor league team.
Agree
But even some time is more than what he was getting from a world class goalie coach before. Plus, with both teams in Toronto I don’t think that it’ll be too hard for Allaire to make his way down to the Ricoh often.

One coach for four guys? That is a very good ratio. He’ll have plenty of time with Allaire if he stays with the organization.

Hellooo
Anybody remember Ilya Bryzgalov? An asset sold at the low end of his value for nothing. Why is Burke moving our young guys when they’re worthless? He did the same thing with Staffan Kronwall during his breakout season with the Marlies.
well
‘cause he has no room for them on the roster and he realizes that they deserve a shot.
Also, it wasn’t so much that Kronwall was given up, he tried to call him up to the big club and he was picked up on Waivers. Meanwhile, wasn’t he a UFA this summer? Burke chose not to resign him…

Kronwall
He was picked up on waivers when he tried to call him up to the big club. I’d guess that Burke knew he wouldn’t re-sign OR didn’t want him to re-sign.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Didn’t Burke call him (and Mark Bell) up with the intention of someone picking him up on waivers?
I don’t understand the logic here. Fine, Reimer might have passed him on the depth chart and be in line to start for the Marlies. But the Marlies still need a backup. We’re getting rid of a 23 year old… for who? So Adam Munro can play 20 games a year?
Who’s to say Reimer is even ready to be a starter in the AHL? He played the regular season for our dogshit ECHL team, then won the playoffs with Washington’s ECHL team. THE EC F’n HL! I’m reasonably certain that if I got back to my plaiyng weight when I was 17, I could make an ECHL roster.
Let Pogge & Reimer duel for the Marlies’ starting job. Please, Burkie?

Bryzgalov wasn’t even sold. He was placed on waivers.
That was a different situation. But I don’t want Burke to give up on Pogge. And I REALLY don’t want Burke to let Pogge go and get nothing in return.

actually
I could see a team like the Oilers sending us a low round pick for him… I mean, they’ve got 36 year old Khabibulin as thier starter, and the not-very-impressive Drouin-Deslauriers pencilled in as his backup.

I could see us just packaging up with one of our defensemen though… I doubt we can deal just Pogge.

I doubt we’d want to deal just Pogge. I’m guessing he’ll get this year to impress, and if he does, will be resigned, to tandem with the Monster (perhaps), and if he doesn’t, he’ll walk as UFA.
Can’t see Burke trading him just for the sake of trading him, cause if he does and Riemer falters, then what? Let Riemer struggle with the Marlies or turn to Adam Munro and essentially waste a development year? With two goalies sharing time, both can learn on the job and from each other (not to mention Allaire).

I don’t think moving Pogge is a good idea, but this isn’t TERRIBLY shocking though. When they started pursuing The Monster so aggressively, it really signaled that they didn’t have a lot of trust in Pogge’s ability to progress.
That being said, I have no idea why they wouldn’t keep him around with the Marlies. Think of it as a risk/reward thing…. if you’re looking at getting a bag of pucks for him, then why not wait a year or 2 and see if he can grow into a better goaltender under Allaire. What’s the worst case scenario? He plays poorly and doesn’t have much trade value? Exactly… it’s not like it could get much worse….

I wonder if
Rask is regretting the trade that sent him to Boston. I mean, he doesn’t regret it as much as we do, but if he was still with the Leafs there would be a good chance that he would already be our starter or at least contending for that job.
Instead, he plays a few games a year with the big club(and does quite well) and spends the rest of his time on the farm.
Thomas re-upping after winning the Vezina didn’t help

I have no doubt that Rask would be at least the backup if he were still a Leaf, and probably the starter. Instead, he ends up on the Bruins where he gets little playing time and they keep signing new backups for Thomas (they signed Dany Sabourin this year). It’s always gonna be a bad Ferguson trade, but it definitely could have been worse…
thank goodness.
Wasn’t he drafted the same year as Pogge? So they’re almost in the same circumstances…

Rask drafted in the first round. Pogge third round.
A Nation of Masochists Pugnacity, Testosterone, TRUCULENCE and belligerence
Which makes it all the more ridiculous that:
a) we as Leaf fans put the “Goalie of the Franchise” tag on him as early as we did; and
b) Burke is so willing to drop him this quickly.
He’s a 3rd round pick. If you manage to find a regular NHLer in the third round, you’ve done a good job with that pick.
Please, keep Pogge. At least for one more year.
Resident Capologist
I watched a ton of Poggs out here and he really wasn’t anything special until the Hitmen picked him up as a 19 year old. He was an average goalie on a poor team in PG, which would have hurt his stock. After the draft the Leafs look brilliant because Pogge turns it on and leads the Hitmen to a couple long playoff runs and wins a gold with Canada at the WJHC.
Finding it weird that I hated Reimer so much with Red Deer, but he was an average goalie on a terrible team there. Seems like tables are turning b/w him and Poggs.
