That Ain't Cool Fool 'Cause it's Friday

We made it through another week, Burke's first back since vacation.  So far, some minimal changes in the front office and none for the team.  Yet.

It's Friday, so we'll keep it short and sweet.  Here's your linkage:

Is it just me or does the Mike Komisarek shot look like a Poker Stars ad minus Mats?

I don’t, but I’m going to write a post about MLB.tv and MLB At Bat on the iPhone asking why the NHL isn’t straight ripping them off.

For $99 I got MLB.tv which lets me watch any MLB game online in HD. For $10 I got MLB At Bat on my iPhone and they sent out an update this week that lets me log into MLB.tv and watch any MLB game live on my iPhone for no extra charge. $110 and I can watch in HD on my computer or fucking telephone vs. $199 from my cable company to watch in SD and only on my TV. I built a media PC to hook up to my plasma.

Come on NHL. I want NHL Gamecenter on the iPhone, HD Leafs streaming, the whole fucking deal.

I go to University of Ottawa

And I got Leafs TV interactive last year. It’s not great quality, but you get every game that’s not national (and some TSN and CBC games you can watch on their respective websites). I don’t know how I’d survive in Ottawa without it.

Also, this year they are going to have the online games in HD, so make sure you have a good connection if you want to use this option. It’s well worth the $80 though, especially since its on your computer so you can watch games in Class or wherever else you have to be on a tuesday night.

The LeafsTV online package is great for one reason and one reason alone: They have an alternate view with no announcer and no commercial break. Watching some kid picking his nose in the stands can be incredibly mesmerizing.

Also, while they schedule/list all the TSN games as offered, it’s up to TSN which ones actually get streamed. Which means you’ll often still miss games on TSN because they’re dicks.

by koopa kid on Jul 25, 2009 4:57 AM EDT up reply actions

TSN sometimes blocks out leafs TV from showing games online, but only when they are showing it online themselves. You can watch a much shittier quality online version at tsn.ca when this happens.

There have been four Cups won since the lockout ended, and I got one of them, and it was a fighting team.

No problem, I tried to do some Wiki research on the Canadian and American antitrust/anticompetition laws and see if I can wrap my head around it, but alas, I don’t have a law degree, nor much sense of how this could affect everything, but I’m hoping maybe someone else can come up with something.

I wonder also how it impacts the single teams in Toronto for MLB and the NBA, seems like Toronto might become a popular place for squeezed players to go, mattering on impact of Canadian laws.

It could be a really really huge deal, that’s why the PAs of all the leagues are working together to fight it and the leagues are all getting together to try to win it.

This would change the face of American pro sports, and I don’t think it would be for the better.

I’m not a lawyer, but I have worked on the communication side of labour issues, competition law and civil litigation/product recall issues involving US based companies operating in Canada.

In all three instances, the US companies had to hire Canadian legal firms and go through Canadian courts even though their Canadian operations were pretty much nothing more than distribution centres.

I’d love to hear from a lawyer/legal expert as to what the implications are for Canadian franchises in a case like this.
