Columbus – Brasard, Filatov, Vorachek
Blues – Bakes, Berglud
Van – Hodgeson

Here’s the speculate source for reference again, from Garrett at MLHS-

Just got a tip that the Stralman-Primeau swap is the tip of the iceberg to something larger happening in Toronto. Being told to keep an eye on the Blue Jackets – Brassard and Klesla are two names that have been bandied about in the rumour mill.
There has been a lot of talk surrounding Columbus, Vancouver and St. Louis during the past week. The suspicion is that today’s Stralman trade was a necessary move to facilitate another, larger move with one of the three aforementioned teams.
Speculate away, folks. Things are getting real interesting, real fast. Updates will come as I receive them.

about the stralman trade

think of stralman and a 7th having an equal value as antropov… not so bad now is it

by GerbersAdvocate on Jul 27, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

how about this for an optimistic take?

stuart+7th = primeau - irrelevant
stralman = 2nd rounder -- so burke got the same for stralman as he did for antropov and moore at the trade deadline.

stralman wasn’t in the team’s long term plans, clearly. so why not get a 2nd rounder for him and hope you get someone who is?

Does this make the Antropov better or worse?

Either way, I think the Stralman for a second round pick (albeit in 2011) is about right in terms of value. And if he wanted out, even better deal for Burke. Just wonder if the Leafs could have held onto him a little longer considering a few d-men will not be here by maybe as early as mid-season.

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

i’m not sure.

i think you’re right about the value. if the trade had simply been announced as stralman for a 2nd, i don’t think anyone would have freaked out (or they wouldn’t have freaked as much). The inclusion of Primeau (and exclusion of the 2nd initially) was disturbing, for sure.

by daoust on Jul 27, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

as initially reported

for at least the first 30-45 minutes the trade was;

so, i think the freak out was warranted

yes, mojitos are also a dynamite rum drink.

i just mix sugar and water and boil it down into a simple syrup. i add a little less club soda as a result so it doesn’t get too watered down.

and definitely make a big pitcher, way easier. plowed through a couple of those in the backyard last weekend. minty rummy goodness.

Too bad about Stralman. Thought he had a future with this club. Oh well. 2nd round pick in return is ok.

Haven’t seen anyone else mention this so I will: Primeau has played for coach Wilson before. In 2003-4 he had 9G 20A 29P 90PIM in 72 games. After the lockout, 2005-6, he had 5G 3A 8P 17PIM before being traded to Boston. So there’s some familiarity there. Wilson knows what Primeau will do for him.

My guess is Jamal Mayers just became extremely expendable. Just a hunch.

From Wikipedia:

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ second-round pick will go to the Chicago Blackhawks due to a trade on September 12, 2008 that sent Robert Lang to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for this pick.10
Montreal previously acquired this pick due to a trade on July 3, 2008 that sent Mikhail Grabovski to Toronto in exchange for Greg Pateryn and this pick

Primeau, when healthy, logged over three minutes a night on the PK – more than any other Flame forward. The PK is one area of the Leafs’ game that needs serious work. Wouldn’t surprise me if Primeau was targeted for his special teams play.

Colin Stuart was this year’s Tyson Nash – a spare part who didn’t have a legitimate shot of making the big club.

Stralman played small. Given the log jam on Leafs D and his contract situation I’m not surprised to see him moved.

I am probably in the minority but I like this deal. It has become fairly obvious that Stralman was never going to get a legitimate chance with the Leafs, turning him into a 2nd round pick is not bad at all for a re-building team.

Primeau is overpaid but he is a big, useful checking line player who will help out the Leafs awful PK and can be a leader on a young team.

The 2nd rounder went to Montreal for grabs. Then they traded it to Chicago for Lang I think.

I also can’t see the Jackets trading Brassard unless Kaberle is involved. A desireable trade for the leafs in that situation would be Kaberle for Brassard and a First.

Also, from the Star-

Primeau said the ankle is fully healed. In fact he was on the ice Monday with Keith teaching at a hockey camp in the Owen Sound area where he spends his summers. That’s where his wife found him to let him know that Calgary GM Darryl Sutter was trying to reach him.

“I figured I was on the move,” said Primeau, who is joining his seventh NHL team. “I turned to my friend and said that if I’m going somewhere, I hope it’s Toronto.”
Primeau, a product of the GTA, was born in Scarborough, lived in Markham until he was 5 and then was raised in Whitby. But more than just happy to be coming home, he’s pleased to be reunited with coach Ron Wilson for whom he played for during his best seasons, including a 29-point campaign while with San Jose.

“I really enjoyed playing for Ron,” he said. “He was just one of those guys that if you worked hard he rewarded you and he just showed a lot of confidence in me. A big part of hockey is confidence and he brought my game up to another level.”

Atlanta signed Antro, not Columbus.

The only way I see these trades happening is if JFJ gets hired in Columbus and is fired after trading Brassard for Kaberle and a soft, middling centre.

Doug McLean gets the St. Louis job and pulls the trigger on that deal after confusing Frogren with Frolov.

I can’t come up with a punchline where the new GM in Colorado would trade one of his few assets for this year’s Eric Fichaud and a broken down 4th line Centre who hasn’t played a complete season in the 14 years he’s been in the NHL and has fewer goals in 14 years than Svatos does post-lockout.

Could happen though.

I’m out for the evening and look at what I miss. A trade goes down, and everyone goes from wanting to jump off a bridge to calming down and accepting, if not loving, the trade. What a rollercoaster.

For some reason, at this point I want to pull a Ron Burgundy and yell “I’M IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION!!”

Anyway, I don’t love this deal but it’s not that bad. Wayne is definitely the lesser of the 2 Primeaus, and if he never ends up playing for the Leafs I won’t be upset at all. I don’t really have much of an opinion on Stralman, he was OK but never struck me as anything special. Maybe he’ll still develop into a real solid puck-moving D but I’m not all that certain he will. To get a 2nd round pick for him is pretty decent to be honest.

the PP is defietly not going to be anything special (as it stands now the number one unit is Poni, Hags and Grabbo)
but the PK should be pretty solid if the goaltending keeps up

Primeau will be an upgrade over Mayers. Hopefully Burke waives him or suckers a pick out of another team like St. Louis did to Fletch last year.

Hey…guess what news I didn’t want to come home to from a long shitty day at work…a bullshit trade like this. What the fuck Burke?

Never have I been more pleased to see the words “…and a second round pick”.

It’s a shame we won’t see Strålman develop here – and I do think he’ll turn out a good player – but if it was never going to happen (roster congestion, Wilson not a fan, whatevs), then it’s a decent return and a trade that I think works out pretty well for both teams.

That 2012 7th rounder is going to be a 90 point a season player though, I can feel it in my bones.

And although I don’t like the idea of paying Primeau 1.4M this season, he’s a UFA in 2010-11, so he won’t be a problem heading into the – potentially – lower cap.

Pretty much, Wilson said Stralie would be a good NHLer one day, just not here. If he needed to go, a 2nd is fair. If he turns out like he could, and we’re hurting for a PP defenseman in the future, fire Burke and Wilson.

also, kill Cliff Fletcher. Unless he’s already dead by then, in which case just pee on his tombstone.

Um, is it just me?

A borderline NHLer, a low value prospect and a 7th pick swapped for a never has been and a 2nd pick….

How is this a jumping off point for a bigger trade???

Just sayin
