and he has nothing to contribute anywhere in the NHL.
The only reason I could see Burke signing him is because he feels bad for him and wants to help him out with his legal bills, since he was the GM of the Canucks when Bertuzzi lost it.

3-years
That’s the part that makes me call b.s. on this one. Burke might like the guy, but 3 years? No way. If it was a one-year deal, I might suspect it was true (I wouldn’t like it), but 3 years? Someone is just making stuff up.

$3M makes it almost unbelievable. At $4.5M Bertuzzi was so bad that Burke had to pay him to go away and now he’s going to go to 66% of that?

responsible for the injury? Yes. It still doesn mean he tried to kill him
A Nation of Masochists The waiting is the hardest part.
No, not to actually murder him. He meant to cause a lot of damage and turns out that he did it better than even he expected.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
here's what happened
Moore had his back to Bert. Bert was yanking on his jersey, and when he realized Moore still wouldn’t play, Bertuzzi pulled himself towards Moore by pulling on the jersey, and took a swing at the guys head.
As Moore fell from the punch, Bertuzzi was still holding onto the jersey and going down with him. To break his own fall, Bertuzzi put his forearm behind Moore’s head. Then, the pile on occured. It’s all quite quick, but if you break it down, that’s the time line of events.
Bertuzzi was at least 230 lbs+ equipment at the time of the injury.
Care to try that and see how your neck holds out?

the neck damage happened on the fall. The pile-on exasperated the problem, but Bertuzzi is the culprit here. The others had no clue to the extent of the damage; were just trying to get in there and take care of business. Bertuzzi is an ass, and his actions are inexcusable, no matter how many times people try.
that said, I think the bitterness flowed too quick. I think they aren’t defending Bertuzzi as much as it appears, but stating their opinion that his actions were not an attempt to kill him, just to get revenge. Bertuzzi is still the villian not the commentors stating the fact they believe he wasn’t trying to kill him. Injure yes, kill no.

PPP here…I have a PhD in video diagnosis like that one American senator that thought he could be president but was really a huge tool and you’re right, the damage was coming because of the forearm shiver. The pile on exacerbated it but I would bet my medical license on it being all Bertuzzi’s fault. The rest is semantics. He wanted to injure Moore and then he wants pity because it worked out too well.

In all honesty, it’s not about the Bertuzzi incident. It happened, it was unfortunate as fuck, and Bertuzzi paid a heavy price. Obviously not as heavy a price as Steve Moore, but the wheels of justice aren’t always fair. Life is fucked like that.
From a pure hockey standpoint:
Nik Antropov put up 46 points in 63 games for the Leafs last season, and was a -14.
Bertuzzi put up 44 points in in 66 games for the Flames, and was a -13.
Everyone is wondering “OMG WHERE WILL THE OFFENCE COME FROM?” Well, if Bert comes at a bargain price, why not?

Time was lucky neither of those guys suffered career ending injuries.

He would have gotten a medal.
And Domi’s elbow on Niedermayer was completely unprovoked.
And completely out of character during his hockey career.

Yup.

Not really.

According to the justice system, which our society functions on, he did. But keep arguing that he didn’t.

Steve Moore keeps arguing that, and I kinda agree with him.

And I’ve hated most of them or am in the process of hating them or have started to hate them since they left.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Agreed
But as wiser men than I have said, two wrongs don’t make a right.
Two things I particularly hated about the Bertuzzi incident was that first, he stalked him around the ice, and second, I never believe he was truly remorseful. If Niedermeyer had of ended up with the injuries Moore did, and Domi didn’t show remorse after the fact, then I’d feel the same way about him.
Domi (and others who have done stupid things, ie. Hunter) got lucky, doesn’t mean Bertuzzi’s act doesn’t make me feel any less sick. And I always felt, they were (barely) hockey plays. Bertuzzi’s flat out wasn’t.
anybody know how long after the incident until Bertuzzi contacted Moore?
i’m not sure he ever did…

Because Bertuzzi didn’t give two shits what happened to Moore. His lawyer told him it would look better.

think you're right
if he was worried about Moore as a human being, he’d have tried to contact him that night.

I know he sucker-elbowed Niedermayer and it was vicious. If people want to hate him for that I completely understand. Obviously I have more leeway for him based on the vastly different circumstances surrounding the incident.
And if anyone didn’t cheer on Domi when he coldcocked Samuelsson then they are probably related to him.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Maybe so, BUT was it not still a dirty cheap shot?
Im sure there were Canucks fans who cheered for Bertuzzi when he did that to Moore
The Leafs may not win everygame, but they will beat the shit out of you

Sure because they are stupid homers. When Domi punched Samuelsson the entire league cheered.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Bertuzzi on Moore is by far the dirtiest of the three. Domi’s elbow was nasty, but it was to Niedermeyer’s front. At least he didn’t elbow him to the back of the head.

I was at that Niedermayer-Domi game. Sad. It turned the series around.

if the Leafs are serious about changing the culture, what does it say about the organization if it brings in a guy like Bertuzzi?

Wasn’t the “culture change” in regards to accountability and dressing room vibes? The whole “country club” deal?
How does Bertuzzi’s signing effect that?
I’m sure if he’s brought in he’d be a coachable guy.
And Burke wants the Leafs to be a tougher, more son-of-a-bitch type of team to play against. And Bertuzzi’s a son of a bitch.

I think Burke respects Bertuzzi in ways we will never quite understand. He stood by him through all the bullshit. They’ve got a bond, yo.

Bertuzzi’s not a son of a bitch, not on the ice any more. Dude plays softer than Wellwood at this point.
which
is another reason to not want him. He’s scared to play his style since the Moore incident, rightfully so, and that makes him completely ineffective.

True and I think that’s part of the whole hockey-code thing (like cops sticking together).
I wouldn’t be remotely surprised to see Bertuzzi signed by MLSE. He was in Toronto the night before free agency season opened and I fully expected Bertuzzi to be the Leafs’ first UFA signing. I’d guess it would be a one-year (2 year max) deal at a $1.5 to $2M/per.
I lived through Dave Manson, Paul Higgins, Tie Domi and other idiots in the Blue and White. I’m sure I can get past a year or two of Bertuzzi.

My loonbat theory has always been the Bert stopped doing roids after the Moore incident, which made him more fragile and disintersted in the truculent aspects of the game.

Bingo
Bertuzzi is not coachable at all. Look at a career of Spezza-esque drop passes and backbreaking stupid penalties. Who was in the box when Canada was pressing Switzerland in Turin? That’s right, our National Shame.

Being a Leaf fan here requires one to be sufficiently lubricated... and truculent!
Tbh, I think (hope?) that this is random rumour-mongering. Burke’s got the Leafs screwed down pretty tight. The moves he’s made so far haven’t hit the press until after they’ve happened. We haven’t heard about who the Leafs are talking to, or the players involved. Even the Kaberle rumours are long on hyperbole and short on detail. It’s the Toronto media trying to find something to write about. As per normal.
Speculation’s fun and all, but these stories are coming from unconfirmed sources from outside the Leafs. I don’t really credit them.
