That’s how Burke ought to be judged this summer: depth on defence and in goal, something that gives his team a chance to steal a few games while it gets a better read on the likes of Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson. Don’t pay attention to what Burke says. Pay attention to what he does.
While I disagree with Blair's assessment of the Sedin Twins I do agree with his closing sentiment. Not signing big named forwards allows the Leafs assess what they have in the kids. They already have filler to cover the gap between now and that future period when the Leafs will contend.

Two points:
- First of all, if you sign the Sedins you don’t need to see if the kids can play on the first line, because you’ve just acquired two players who can. I’m all for staying focused on the future, but you don’t pass up a first-line player because you have a guy who someday maybe possibly could be a first-line player.
- Burke should still be looking to sign a couple of veterans to one-year deals to fill out the top lines. Leave room for the kids, sure, but I don’t want to see some young player get burned out because he was thrown into a first-line situation before he was ready.
And besides, if you sign a veteran and he players well you can flip him for a pick at the deadline.

I agree
The Twins would have been great signings because they would still be very good players when the Leafs are contending.
I think that the Leafs have enough guys that can be filler. Burke can keep looking but I don’t know that he’ll find too many UFAs that want to take short-term deals.

Seems to me the Sedins were the only offensively skilled UFA’s who could be signed to a reasonable contract. At this point I don’t know where Burke will be able to find anyone close to their level short of trading Kaberle + picks + prospects. If Kaberle does get traded the Leafs better get a lot in return, losing him will hurt the offense more than losing any forward.

We need at least one established first line scorer. Unfortunately we won’t get any in FA, so it will have to be the trade route.
Don’t trade Kaberle unless we can get markedly better.

Agreed
He becomes more valuable to us now that his primary responsibilities are the first pass out of the zone, and the powerplay.
