Remaining UFA Forwards
James Mirtle takes a look at the remaining UFA forwards that played more than 10 minutes a game. He also identifies players that could help the powerplay and the penalty kill.
Anyone on that list catch your eye?

Agree with Jared’s list. Wouldn’t (couldn’t) sign ’em all, but Beauchemin and one of the forwards would be nice.

I’d still take Koivu here. Just to keep Grabovski on the straight and narrow.
And to annoy Habs fans….

oh man would that drive them insane

Malhotra
Moen
Kotalik
and Beauchemin
I like Kotalik’s size, and the fact that he’s able to pot 15-20 goals while playing a checking role…

Any of Malhotra, Kotalik and Moen would be better than Stajan.

i say we package Stajan with Kabby if he gets traded, maximize that return and sign one of them as a replacement/improvement

Forget Alex Tanguay. We don’t want any Habs free agents.

Did Beauchemin move to forward?
Also, I like Moen and Malhotra.

There's some attractive guys for this year
But I don’t know how many of them would help the Leafs’ long-term goals. I’d pick up Tanguay or Axelsson; maybe take a flyer on Malhotra or Williams. Pyatt would be nice but I think we already traded Kubina for a penalty killer (who must therefore be better than the ones available for free).
Maybe the best idea is to pick up a couple of the above with an aim to possibly trade them at the deadline – effectively using the Leaf cap space to ‘warehouse’ talent for the contending teams. Assuming, of course, that the Leafs are still thinking of being sellers this year, which may not be the case.
I've been looking at the sky
The only problem there is that we’re robbing the kids of ice time if we sign bigger names just to flip them down the line.

In general I agree, which is why I’m not that excited about the Leafs signing anyone on the list.
In the ‘warehouse’ case, though, I don’t see how signing Alex Tanguay or Robert Lang and then flipping them at the trade deadline will rob that many kids of ice time. The Leafs just don’t have six ‘kids’ clamouring for powerplay action on the big club. Having a veteran out there could even be helpful, and I don’t see Blake in a mentoring role.

but
by putting other guys in their place, we don’t have the opportunity to give these kids the PP time at the NHL level.
I’m not thinking of the guys we just signed, but Tlusty, Grabovski and Mitchell for starters. I think Hanson, Bozak and Stahlberg are going to get plenty of opportunities at the NHL level as well.
I don’t disagree that we have the depth to not sign the guys you mentioned, but if it’s to the detriment of our rebuild and player development, then I’d rather we let the kids learn. There’s no reason not to next season…

Kaberle traded for top line winger and Beauchemin brought in to replace him.
WOuld be VERY happy
ps. Sorry eyebleaf.
The Leafs may not win everygame, but they will beat the shit out of you
Truculence FTW
id rather get a number one center out of kabby, but a highscoring winger would ne nice
