I’ll say it again, why not convert White into a forward?

He proved he’s capable up there last season when Wilson used him on the wing. He’s responsible defensively (being a defenceman and all), he proved to have a bit of a nose for the net, he’s not averse to the physical game at all. He seems like a perfect fit for one of Burke’s coveted “bottom 6” forwards.

by clrkaitken on Jul 6, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

The one knock might be that he’s too small. I like the idea myself because until last year I was never a fan of him as a defenceman really.

Wilson likes a big D. He initially didn’t like White on the blueline because of his size. Just a guess, but maybe Wilson would really like to turn White into a forward but last year injuries prevented that experiment from really happening. I could see White playing very well with Jason Blake.

Stralman signed in May of 2007, when he was still 20. As such, he’s exempt from waivers until the end of his contract, or until he’s played 160 games.

MVR, Kabby and Strahlman could all be goners. I don’t think Strahlman has done enough to endear himself to Burke.

Getting MVR moved could be the most difficult, depending on what Burke wants in return. He’s a very capable d-man when healthy. His injuries this past season were no fault of his own (except for facing the boards when Kostopolus decided to check him, that was his fault (sarcasm))

Anyhoo, I think Burke has definitely decided this team will be at the least, a painful opponent.

Also, Beauchemin is my next jersey.

can’t see why he would be.

The good news is he’s on his last year of his deal, and with a $2.9M cap hit, he’s a bargain as well. By far, when healthy, our best defender last season. Feel bad for the guy, but Wilson seems to think injuries are a result of a lack of fitness. Remeber his remarks regarding Coliacovo?

but I seem to recall that Franky had more ATOI during the Ducks’ Cup year than both Niedermayer and Pronger. Maybe it was just one of them but the point being, is that Beauchemin is a wonderful, albeit underrated, blueliner. He is also a nasty piece of business when it comes to the fisticuffs. He’s one of those guys who doesn’t have to fight much because of the damage he has inflicted on other guys in the past.

I’m not going to attempt to suggest any type of forward Burke may be targetting, but from the net out (yes, Toskala is a west coast goalie, smallish and athletic. Luongo is the anomaly out here. A damn talented one, but I digress…) this team reeks of hard hits and fast skating.

I like that all of these guys can still skate. It’s not like SS Gill, who used his size to great advantage, but still managed to find himself a step or two behind the opposition. These guys can play smart positionally, hit, and skate.

And what do you get for them?

Kaberle doesn’t go. Nor Komisarek, or Beauchemin, or Schenn. Presumably, you keep Exelby around, given that you just traded for him. You have Van Ryn, Finger and then Frogren, White, all vying for the six hole?

I can’t imagine the trade value of any of the latter four there being anything special, and sure, you can bury them in the minors or whatnot, but…

by dare_ on Jul 6, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

White could have a bit more value than we think. Still, I’d like to think his hard work, hustle and never back down attitude, coupled with the fact that he’s been consistently healthy means he’s in Burke’s and Wilson’s good books.

I don’t think Kabby is too popular a player. If anything, Burke is saying all the right things about Kabby, to ensure his value stays high and the return is good. he doesn’t want to appear like he needs to shop him, even though, he’s under the gun with the NTC coming back in to play in August.

I guess I’ve just always been a Kessel fan. I think his single ball endears me. I’d love to see him in a Leafs uni…and if the Leafs want to have a stifling defensive d-corps…get ’er done!

ditto on Kessel

minus the teste fixation. I’m a big Kessel booster myself, and i’d love to see him as a Leaf. But i’m not holding my breath for much of anything to happen on that front.

we need room on the blue line, and Kabby is the best asset to get us some decent scoring forwards

Gotta keep at least one skilled PP D-man to set things up. Kabby is great at that and although he isn’t punishing on D, he is positionally sound and makes a great first pass. At 4.25 mil, best bargain D in the NHL

Is it October yet?

by floridaLEAF on Jul 6, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

of course, but still, all about return value, if Burke wants a good return (ie kessel) then Kabby goes, if he wants some mid range picks or prospects, then he moves others

It could be that Burke’s decided he’s not going to get what Kabby’s worth so now he moves to Plan B which is to see what he can get for everybody else.

by general borschevsky on Jul 6, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe Burke when he says that he thinks Kabby is a good player, a good team-mate and a good contract (cap number) and that he won’t move him unless he gets offered the appropriate return. If there isn’t a trading partner willing to cough up the value, he’ll send the rest of the spare parts out for picks and depth at forward, if necessary (he won’t get an elite scorer for a package of second-tier defensemen, unless JFJ has been hired on as GM somewhere).

I would say Exelby becomes the 7th d-man when you need someone’s block to get clobbered in an open ice hit. Otherwise he’s probably a bit of a defensive liability.

So that trade becomes a Kubina dump?

by dare_ on Jul 6, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much, I don’t think exelby’s that spectacular other than his hitting ability. Plus if he misses it can lead to some scary odd man rushes.

by LeafFanInVan on Jul 6, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think White’s defensive play merits his consideration on the blueline. I’m thinking of incidents like that game late in the season where he basically bailed on the open attacker during a 2 on 2 rush and left the player wide open to take a pass for a tap-in, then came up with some lame excuse for why he didn’t think he’d be able to cover the guy.

Wilson/Burke won’t be impressed with stuff like that; they will, however, like the guy’s determination, work ethic and speed. I say he sticks around as a forward.

A signing coup involving Swedish twins Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin may have accelerated the process of winning, as did Cliff Fletcher’s landmark acquisition of Doug Gilmour from the Calgary Flames in 1992. A five-year plan for a terrible hockey team suddenly became a one-year plan, as Gilmour lifted the franchise on his back and carried it to within one game of the 1993 Stanley Cup final. But, even that accomplishment – as memorable as it is for Leaf fans – had a negative impact on the organization.

The reason it was bad?

It got Fletcher to believe he could take the final big step by adding more veteran NHLers at the expense of player development… thus the short, mostly-inglorious Leaf tenures of Kirk Muller, Dave Gagne, Larry Murphy, Mike Gartner, Rich Sutter, Benoit Hogue, Mike Ridley, Sergio Momesso, and others.

Um, I gotta think back to back final 4 appearances are never really a bad thing, eh Howard?

It’s so dumb. It completely overlooks the acquisitions of Rouse, Potvin, Zezel, Andreychuk, and many others who were key to those teams. Howard constructs his analysis with toy blocks.

to be fair,

WCH starts out quite reasonable. Hindsight being what it is, he can second guess the 93 Leafs all day long. We came within a game of a cup final. He thinks that’s a step backwards.

He’s got some great, and promising comments from Wilson in here. Wonder who called to get them?

WCH’s initial blog:

TORONTO (July 6) – A long-anticipated, richly-deserved bonus awaits fans of the Maple Leafs if those running the hockey club can translate their words to action. For the first time in almost a quarter-century, the Leafs appear content to properly assemble a team that is capable of repeated challenge in the National Hockey League. Such a venture will require added patience and the willingness to endure at least one more season of hardship in the standings. But, it could lead to a circumstance almost completely foreign to the hockey club – and its legion of followers – in the post-expansion NHL.

"We would like to make the playoffs next year," said Leafs’ coach Ron Wilson to a small group of reporters at Lakeshore Arena on Monday. "But, I think for the next couple of years, we’re going to be spending a lot of time developing players. If we can make the playoffs while doing that, it’ll be great. But, primarily, if I’m going to have five or six rookies on the team [next season] – which is a real possibility – I have to make sure they get better as hockey players.

"When the pressure is on you to make the playoffs," Wilson continued, "a lot of coaches will throw young guys under the bus in an effort to do it, and rely on all the veterans. I’ve got to guard myself against doing that."

Just posted this as a comment on Howard’s blog:

Just for fun, here are the players that Fletcher apparently sacrificed “player development”:

Kirk Muller – Acquired in a three way deal for backup goalie Damian Rhodes and prospect bust Ken Belanger.

Benoit Hogue – Acquired for young goalie and eventual bust Eric Fichaud.

Dave Gagne (sic) – Acquired for Hogue.

Larry Murphy – Acquired for Dmitri Mirinov and a second round pick.

Mike Gartner – Acquired for senior citizen Glenn Anderson.

Rich Sutter – Acquired for cash.

Mike Ridley – Acquired for Rob Pearson

Sergio Momesso – Acquired for Ridley.

So basically a second round pick, a solid backup goalie, and a bunch of middling prospects who never did anything.

Yes, Cliff certainly sold the farm to bring in that group of veterans.
