Monster is a sweet ass chant to get going. Hope he works out for you guys.
The Capitals made a Theo video trying to prompt us into cheering for him but it didn’t work. The video said THEO in really large font and the O was a hole in glass that a puck went through so it ended up looking more like THE HOLE. Little did they know how appropriate the video would be.
Is it to early to ask?
What if he sucks?

haha well played.
A Nation of Masochists TRUCULENCE!! If you value your life, don't cross our blue line.
If he sucks, we’ve spent $900K on a back-up. BFD.
This is pretty much no-risk in my eyes. If we stink again because of goaltending, well both Toskala and the Monster’s contracts are up, so we can try and find a permanent fix next year, and we’ll happily take another high draft pick. If he thrives, then we can increase his workload next season. Plus, this gives Pogge & Reimer a full year to develop with the Marlies.
Resident Capologist
And if he’s amazing we have the cap room to resign him at a higher salary and to move Toskala elsewhere.
A Nation of Masochists TRUCULENCE!! If you value your life, don't cross our blue line.
If he does stink, he’s also waiver eligible so there’s no risk in sending him down to the AHL.

I think Frogren just repaid his debt:
Gustavsson will make his decision based on his comfort level with the team, its management, stability in ownership and “a gut feel.”
To that end, the Leafs had fellow Swede Jonas Frogren talk up the team with Gustavsson.

This is just like the time that one team signed that extremely promising young Scandinavian goaltender that was going to solidfy their often shaky goaltending situation and provide that team the backbone it needs to make the playoffs.
And since I haven’t heard much about Vesa Toskala since then, I’ll just assume that’s how it all played out.

Yup, beat me to it
Per the CBA, a player entering the league at 24 years old must sign an entry level contract of one year, not to exceed $850,000.
After that, since he’s under 27, he become an RFA.

We need a puck-moving defenceman. Ottawa got stuck without a puck moving defenceman last year and they were horrible. Couldn’t get out of their own end. Couldn’t make a break-out pass or a play through the nuetral zone and couldn’t get the puck to Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson efficiently enough for them to do anything dangerous with it.
White, Van Ryn, or Stralman have to show they can do it before you move Kaberle now, but why bother when you already have one of the best puck moving defenceman in the league?
by general borschevsky on Jul 7, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
sorry to break this to all of you, but the hype Burke has built up for Kaberle is to improve his trade value.
He’s a good player, but we’re now 10 players deep on the blue line. MVR has minimal trade value, Finger’s not going anywhere, Stralman could be kept on the Marlies for another year. White has some value, but not the same as Kabby.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against Kaberle, it’s just that from the way Burke is building this team, I’m not so sure he’s as high on Kaberle as he claims. Pure speculation on my part. If I’m wrong, then we’ve still got a great puck moving d-man. If I’m right, then I’ll be one of the few not shocked at all that he was moved.

‘Cept Van Ryn’s had his head bashed a few times too many and is a question mark, White is no Kaberle and Stralman is unproven.
You only trade Kaberle if someone blows the doors off.
I’d be less surprised to see Van Ryn or someone else move for a pick.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Kaberle had his head smashed in by Janssens and was terrible last year.
If Kaberle can play like his pre-Janssens self don’t trade him for anything.

But even post-bash Kaberle has more upside than Ian White and is more reliable than Van Ryn…
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Kaberle played 57 games this year, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. He also saw -0.039 competition against Ian White’s +0.007 competition.
Kaberle was on the ice for 3.23 goals per sixty minutes against Ian White’s 2.74 GAON/60. Kaberle and White had identical 3.04GFON/60 making Ian White a plus player and Kaberle a minus.
To sum up, Ian White played more games, played more minutes per game, played against harder opposition and had better numbers than Kaberle this season.

There was a major head injury that you can use to delineate untouchable Kaberle from last year’s Kaberle.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Kaberle is really at a low point in value, even if the lack of UFA puck moving defenceman might help his value a little. But he still has two years of cheap contract, so if he has a good year and the other 25 defenceman on the roster show they can handle his role, deal him at the deadline, or next summer.
There’s no reason to rush.
by Its Cold In Here on Jul 7, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
There might be
If the Leafs make the playoffs then Kaberle’s NTC doesn’t get waived in the summer. That means if he isn’t traded now then the Leafs are at the mercy of him waiving it for a trade. What are the odds that he:
A. wants to do the Leafs a favour
B. Will re-sign?
Either way he could be lost for nothing.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Beauchemin can move a puck

i think we can all agree that burke knows the value of a #1 puck-moving D making $4.25M. he’ll trade him only if the return is right.
Burke said Kaberle will be in the lineup come September unless “somebody blows our doors off.”
I don’t see those doors being blown off. Kaberle’s been on the “market” for a long time now.

Kessel is a measuring stick, When I say Kessel, i mean a player of that goal scoring ilk, I still think if traded Kaberle has the ability to fetch something like that, but i do not want him traded UNLESS he can bring back something of that caliber.

I know you’ll be sad to see him go. You’re a smart man. I don’t doubt that.
But if we’re in the midst of a rebuild, and Kaberle is still at the age where he can be a part of the solution, why aren’t we patient enough to wait for guys like Tlusty and Kadri, Bozak and Hanson?
I don’t know. I just think Kaberle brings more to the table right now, especially at his price.

TRUCULEXTENSION
Amen to not trading Kabby unless the return is A+. Remember the basket of out-of-position-crunching-hits that Kubina turned into? That’s what we want?
I don’t see why it would be unheard of to think kaberle would re-up long-term at a similar cap hit. I mean, presumably if he thought he was worth 4.25 in his late twenties, why do we assume he’s worth way more now when he’ll be on the down slope in his early 30s?
if the goal is to contend in 10-11, why the rush for a scoring forward now? We should have an idea what we actually have in Bozadrivichlustyson by then….
Thanks for joining.
Kaberle took a hometown discount and was reportedly very annoyed that he was asked to waive his NTC last summer. I think he’ll want market value.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I’m not from the “Trade Kabby!” camp, necessarily.
But the problem is that – in two years – Kabby is no longer a $4.25 million dollar defenseman. Can we afford him then? If not, we need to flip him when his value is highest. If that’s now, so be it.

as I said, he’s building up his trade value. If he gets moved, then we’re getting something pretty awesome in return. If he’s not moved, then we’ve got a puck moving d-man for cheap.
I’ve said it 1000 times before, but it’s much easier to root for the logo on the jersey and not the player themselves. I’m a Leafs fan. And yes, that means come October, i’ll even be rooting for Komisarek….

Patience, grasshoppers. Kabby is worth more than a scoring forward. I know everyone wants PLAYOFFS!!!!!1, but I would like to go deep into them as well as just making them and don’t mind waiting another year or so to do it.
Is it October yet?
Agreed. Burkie knows this too. I am confident he won’t flip Kabby unless he gets a deal that he thinks brings the scoring meat to T.O.
Keep in mind, though, that we don’t have Kabby at 4.25 forever. Burke has to make the judgement as to whether he will be able to keep Kabby when the team competes for a Cup. If he doesn’t think the Leafs will compete next year, and he’s pretty sure that Kabby’s raise after that will rule him out, he needs to flip the asset now, with all due respect to Tomas, who is my homie.

there is the “trade while value is high” option. Does Kabby’s value go up if Burke waits? We’ve got this season and the next at $4.25M per, then what? He’s 30 now, and he’s not getting younger.
Do we hang on to Kabby until his value is less? There’s no guarantees he’ll maintain his skills at such a high level while he ages. There’s no guarantee he doesn’t get knocked around like he did in NJ and suffers another concussion.

Seriously, how am I anti Kaberle?
By saying his value may not get any higher, so if we’re going to move him, do it now? If we’re not going to move him, then we’ll still be alright?
Whatever. We’ve talked about trading an asset when it’s value is at it’s highest many many times before. The one thing the Leafs have done to a fault is hang on to players when they’re past their usefulness, or traded them at their lowest value. If Kaberle isn’t part of the future, then move him now while his value is still high. That’s my argument.
If Burke truly believes he doesn’t want to move him, then why not take the Schenn route and say so publicly? Because he wants to maximize his return. That’s good management.

Nowhere near the same skill level though.
Agreed that MVR has the most immediate potential bet he’s a real wild card right now the way Colaiacovo was last year.
Stralman is still a year or two away and may never be as good as Kabby, but he might come close if he develops properly.
White should be a Forward. Full stop. He had a great year last year, but he may have a tough time cracking the top-six just like he did last season with the kind of Defence that Burke and Wilson want to go with. With Kubina gone, I don’t like the idea of White being our “most skilled defenceman on the point and powerplay”. Simple solution is move him to forward where we could use his mojo and spirit.

I posted some numbers from Behind the Net based on White’s 5-on-5 defensive play.
He was one of our best defenders last season.
Not sure if you read my post, but your thoughts on that?
A Toronto sports blog, where unabashed homerism is alive and well...
PLAYOFFS!!!!1
It was a great post. Got me thinking about where White is going to fit in. You didn’t just leave out Jeff Finger from your top-six, you also left out Van Ryn and Frogren. Waiting in the wings are Oreskovic and Stralman. In other words, the Leafs defence is suddenly DEEEEEEP.
If we trade Kaberle, however, that leaves us a little heavey on trulucence and a little light on actual talent. As discussed, MVR, Stralman, and White, are not suitable replacements for Kabby. Easy solution, keep Kabby and move White to Forward. The defence stays solid and a little less deep and you upgrade the forward lines with a great two-way player at the same time.
Wouldn’t most of agree to trade White if we could get a Forward in return that was as good as White at forward? Cut out the middleman. White, you’re a Forward now.
by general borschevsky on Jul 7, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Based on White’s play last season (including his being named to Team Canada as a defenseman), I’d rather have him in my top 6, along with Kaberle.
That gives us 2 better skating and betting puck moving defenseman.
If you move White to forward, trade Van Ryn, and put Finger or Frogger on the back end, we’ve got 5 rough, stay at home types, and one puck moving d-man in Kaberle.
I’d rather have two. And I just can’t find it in me to move White after the way he played last year. He’s versatile and all, but I really think he’s got a future as a d-man, perhaps as a Rafalski type d-man.
A Toronto sports blog, where unabashed homerism is alive and well...

You know I love Darcy. I hate how it ended though.
Why is it OK for others not to waive their notrade but not Tucker?
JFJ, as always, is the real villain here.
It’s not about waiving, not waiving it’s about the impact each of the NTC 5 had on the Leafs. In the end, Tucker is the only one of the five who really screwed the team.
McCabe waived his NMC.
Kubina and Kaberle had windows when they could be dealt. One is gone, the other is rumoured to be.
Sundin deprived the Leafs of potential assets, but he didn’t leave a permanent stink by saddling the team with a six year cap hit.
Tucker is the only one that shivved the franchise he allegedly loved so much. Why not accept a trade or at the very least provide a list of acceptable teams? Nope, for Tucker it was all about money and sticking it to Toronto.
I really hope Colorado buys him out so he can have the ignomy of being the only NHL player to be bought out twice.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...

No, it’s not Tucker’s fault that he had a NMC (add it to the list of Ferguson’s sins) but it really should be noted that he’s the only one of the five that left skid marks in his wake.
I also don’t buy this “love of the Leafs” stuff. His agent demanded a buy-out from the first whisper of a trade. You’d think that as a professional the least he could do is offer up six to eight teams he’d be willing to go to. But no, that was never on the table. He’d rather stick it to the team he supposedly loves.

Once it’s clear that your time with a team is done, I think the right thing to do is to sit-down and amicably figure out the next steps. Is there a city you want to go to? A team you’re willing to play for?
With Tucker it was straight to the buy-out. His agent wouldn’t hear talk of anything less. If the Leafs didn’t want him Tucker wanted to screw the Leafs. It was willfull and it was malicious and that’s what makes it unprofessional.
Maybe you can cheer for a guy that screwed over the Leafs like that, but I can’t.

Leafs cap info: http://www.thehockeygm.com/tor.html
We have $6M in space. I say the Leafs do nothing with it and wait until the trade deadline. If they’re in a playoff spot $6M of pure cap space will buy you a fucking ton of players that late in the season.

They could potentially have more after a few trades too; either a trade between now and training camp, some time in around november and finally the trade deadline. It looks like for the first time since the introduction of the cap, we finally are not gonna have any issues for years and have good players in our system… rebuild almost done?

Also notice that Blake gets paid $3 million this year but has a $4 million cap hit which if the Leafs wish to move him could help out a team that wants to make the minimum cap number.
A Nation of Masochists TRUCULENCE!! If you value your life, don't cross the Leafs blue line.
According to the link, Bozak, Schenn, Gustavsson and Kulemin all have bonus clauses. I seem to recall seeing that bonuses can go up to $4 million—so are we in danger of already being over the cap if bonus targets are met (meaning a corresponding reduction next year)? Does anyone know the bonus info for these guys?
I agree with waiting though. We have a boatload of cap space next year and there are likely to be some seriously cash- or cap-constrained teams to take advantage of.
by The '67 Sound on Jul 7, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
From what I understand, the Leafs do not have to leave cap space open to accomodate the bonuses should they be met. However, if they are met and it puts them over the cap then that counts towards next season’s figure.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
by PPP on Jul 7, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Teams can go over the cap by 7.5% to pay their bonuses. That amount is then deducted from the following year’s cap.
A Nation of Masochists TRUCULENCE!! If you value your life, don't cross the Leafs blue line.
Right, but I don’t want to lose cap space next year—I think we’re a lot more likely to be in a position to contend seriously next year than this year. I’ve heard figures as high as $4M for Bozak and Schenn so if their bonus targets are attainable maybe we’re already at or near the cap.
Not to dampen the enthusiasm for recent events—which I share—but am very curious about how much cap space Burke actually has to play with if he wants to avoid reducing his cap for next year (as I assume he does).
by The '67 Sound on Jul 7, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
About $31M is committed to 9 players for the cap for next season.
Toskala, Van Ryn, Exelby, Frogren, Stempniak, Ponikarovsky, Stajan and Mayers are all UFAs, and Kulemin, John Mitchell, Hanson, Tlusty, White, Stralman, Oreskovic & Gustavsson will all be RFAs. Raycroft’s buyout also comes off our cap at the end of the year.
So we have great cap flexibility for the next few years.
Resident Capologist
Bozak could go up to $4 million but Schenn can only go up to $1.25 million. Neither puts us in a risk of going over the cap . Also it highly unlikely that both will receive max bonuses.
A Nation of Masochists TRUCULENCE!! It's not just a word. It's a way of life.
Bozak hitting the targets that would pay him $4M would be the best thing that ever happened to us. We don’t know what they are but to hit $4M you’re probably looking at a point per game performance out of Bozak.
It might even be necessary for him to win the Calder to get $4M.

The problem is they don’t even care about the Canucks at this point either. There has to be a prolonged stretch of success by the team before most Canucks fans hop aboard the bandwagon. Prior to that the feeling is “meh, they’ll probably suck again this year”, regardless of performance from the previous year.

I’m not wading through all these comments, but I’d like to know. Are the people who were unhappy at the lack of movement at the trade deadline and before the draft satisfied now?
Cos I gotta tell you, I’m about ready to have Burke’s babies. I’m ovulating as we speak.

I asked the same thing. Now I see “but the Leafs have no forwards” and I say “patience grasshopper”

Yeah, apart from perhaps trying to poach Versteeg there’s no rush about the forwards. Let the GMs sweat it out a little, they might be more desperate to overpay for some quality defense.
I know I’d much rather watch a team that destroys the opposing team forwards than one that scores a bunch and gets scored on even more. Mostly because that’s what I’ve been watching the past, oh, 8 years or so.
yeah honestly, if Burke picks anyone up to play forward too quickly, we all will be jonesing hard for the season to start. It’s not even goddamn August! Patience people! Burke is Gone Fishin’ and after mounting a whale in his office he’ll worry about a forward or more. The panic in the other teams will be ripe for the picking by then

If he can manage to keep Kabs and get a quality #1 centre and possibly a scoring winger, I’ll be one happy, happy dude.
in my heart, I want Mats back. I don’t know if he will or if Burke and co will want him to come back for a one year and done, but it would be a solid way to fill that role until the kids develop.

I think if he signs a reasonable deal (couple mil, tops) he’d fill the leadership + top centre role perfectly.
I think you’re right.
There’s no way Mats comes back. I just don’t think that’s where the management’s mentality is.
They traded Kubina because he won’t be a part of the team going forward. Sundin’s the same. In ten years, they’ll bring him back and raise his banner, but he’s not coming back to play.

He wouldn’t sign that contract unfortunately.

Wooooooo!
Wow…there be a lot of comments! Awesome that Burke got the Monster sewn up. Now that we have excellent (better than before anyhow) depth from the red line to the blueline, whats next? At this rate, I believe the Burke will figure this shit out.
Long live the Sweetcheeks!

I love
that Borje Salming called him to get him to come to the leafs…

I love
That he said ‘the most famous Leaf from Sweden talked to him, Salming..’
Love how he qualified that (no Sundin, it is not you)
