Pronger signs 7 year extension with the Flyers
Obviously this is a front loaded contract and he will retire before it runs out... I don't see Pronger being an effective player at 42.

The Flyers might have screwed up. Even if he retires the cap hit will remain.

for sure?

We were talking about it but the CBA says that the age of the player for that provision is calculated on June 30th of the year in which the contract takes effect. Since Pronger has one year left on his contract this one doesn’t take effect until June 30, 2010 by that time Pronger will be 35.
Mirtle is looking into it so I’d expect more from him tonight or tomorrow but that’s the way a few of the guys read the CBA.

I'm pretty sure you guys are right
From the CBA:
For each League Year, “Actual Club Salary” for each Club shall be
calculated as the sum of the following amounts:
iii) All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in a League Year by a Player
who is in the second or later year of a multi-year SPC which was
signed when the Player was age 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to
the League Year in which the SPC is to be effective), regardless of
whether, or where, the Player is playing….
I take that to mean that if Pronger’s contract says he get paid for, let’s say 2014, but had already retired by then, the team still takes the cap hit for his salary which is still “on the books”.

Prongers contract numbers
09-10: $6.25 mill
10-11: $7.6 mill (Start of new contract. Pronger 36 on June 30th)
11-12: $7.6 mill
12-13: $7.2 mill
13-14: $7.0 mill
14-15: $4.0 mill
15-16: $0.525 mill
16-17: $0.525 mill

Is that cap reduction permissable under the CBA? I thought payments could only move in 50% increments (e.g. 8:4; 4:2; 2:1; 1:0.5 etc.)

Yeah
That’s the clause. Holmgren might be the dumbest GM in league history or he thinks Pronger will still be worth $5M in 7 years.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Yeah a $4.921 cap hit for 7 years guaranteed.
Now consider the fact that it comes at a cost of two 1st rounders, a possible 3rd rounder, and Lupul plus Sbisa.
Ouch

why is Holmgren competing with Gainey and Murray for title of most inept GM? The only chance this works out for them is Chelios having bitten him and transforming him into a zombie as well.

I think Holmgren has spent too much time around Bobby Clarke and his special brand of crazy has infected him. It’s too late to save Holmgren and Philly now. Not that I’d want them to be saved, of course…

philly failing is always a good thing. they love having no cap space too.

It’s starting to sound like the Flyers checked with the NHL and were told the cap hit wouldn’t count. And it also sounds like that may have been wrong, based on the CBA.
This has the potential to be epicly entertaining.

So we’ll simultaneously see the League punish the Leafs for an ambiguous statement while the Flyers will get off for blatantly misreading the CBA?
Awesome.

Presumably, yes.

Elliotte Friedman (after talking with Daly) confirms it’s an over-35 contract. The date that matters is the date when the extension kicks in – June 30 of next year.

Best comment from Broad Street Hockey:
Im an attorney.
The parenthetical is modifying the definition of "age 35 or older".
Again: The Flyers don’t sign this deal if it counts as a 35+ contract.

Whoops, supossed to say: "I’m an attorney for what its worth." Not trying to sound like a jerk, just that I’ve read a lot of legalese.

In that guy’s previous comment he emphasizes that the contract has to be signed when the player is 35 not that the player is 35 when it goes into effect so he thinks (in his legal opinion) that there would not be a cap hit.

Friedman talks with Daly
Yes, its an Over 35 deal, and yes, every year will count against the Flyers cap even if Chris retires." Impressed Daly was up at 6 am
Bill Daly on Pronger contract: "The relevant date is the June 30 before the extension becomes effective. So that’s June 30, 2010…
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Oh how I hope Pronger has a change of heart after this season and wants to study Buddhism in Nepal or something, just so he can retire and screw the Flyers cap space for years to come! That would be “phan-phucking-tastic”!!

Maybe he’ll run off with a reporter.
