Leafs Sign Joey MacDonald
The Leafs have signed ex Peterborough Petes goaltender Joey MacDonald [HockeyDB stats] to a one year deal at a yet to be determined salary. This is a solid move to give the Marlies some competent goaltending with the departure of franchise savior a horrible goalie who we always hated Justin Pogge. (Sigh.)
Joey MacDonald played for a godawful Islanders team (no offense intended) last season and put up better numbers than Vesa Toskala by a wide margin. On Long Island MacDonald posted a respectable .901 save percentage and shut out the Detroit Red Wings.
This seems like a very shrewd signing. To reiterate, MacDonald is probably a better goaltender than Vesa Toskala at this point in time. Assuming Toskala gets hurt or plays like he usually does, or if both Gustavsson and Toskala play well making Vesa expendable then MacDonald would be a more than capable backup. This addresses our lack of organization depth at the goaltending spot and earns Chemmy's "Useful Minor Leaguer" Seal of Approval.

MacDonald put up better numbers than Toskala on a worse team. I watched MacDonald get hung out to dry plenty of times.

oh of course, his numbers were stellar for playing behind that team, just there is something tainted about former islanders players

Yeah its hard to keep a save % over .900 giving up 3.37 a game.
Just think of him as a former Red Wings castoff.

Nah, the Leafs have two sets of NHL defencemen now. That means the Marlies will be automatically better than the Islanders. MacDonald also had an assist last year, so he should finish among the top scorers on the Marlies.

Did anyone else notice that Anaheim doesn’t have an AHL affiliate? They have to convince an AHL team to take Pogge on their roster. Does any team have a spot open? The only one I can think of is Providence. They need to replace Tuukka Rask.

Reimer peaks over his shoulder...
…and now sees Joey MacDonald, a guy with NHL experience, on a two-way deal, who wants nothing more than to get a crack at the Leafs.
Lets do a quick Burke check:
1. Make the team tougher. Check
2. Have competition at every position. Check.
One of MacDonald or Reimer will grab the reigns. Or they’ll fight? Both?

I hope he has the Cookie Monster, he’s blue and white, so that works, plus he could add in some pictures of Cookies, leading to Kyle Wellwood’s indefinite suspension for trying to bite a goalie’s face, ripping off a goalie’s mask, proceeding to somehow easily tear through the mask with his teeth, and then falling over and crushing Lee Stempniak, ending his career and getting his contract off the books. THAT would be the greatest mask of all time.
