I’m going to declare the day Kaberle’s NTC kicks back in as “@eyebleaf day”. If anyone needs him he’ll be running up and down Bay St.

Carlton style

I like it.

Examples of proper use:
“Did you see Chasing Amy? Joey Lauren Adams rocked a Potvin jersey, Carlton style.”
“I just got my new Gustavsson jersey, but it’s so damn hot I have to wear it Carlton style for now.”

So much for more scoring

But the more I explore it the less I’m worried about our forwards.

I am worried about offensive skill on the blue line, and losing Kaberle would take it from a minimum to nonexistent. It’s a good thing he’s staying.

At least we won’t be the Ottawa Senators. Doesn’t help to have forwards who can score if you can’t get them the puck.

Still, something’s gotta give on the blue line but it will probably happen after camp.

Young Guns

With Kaberle not available, what can we now offer to try and ply either Phil Kessel or Drew Stafford from their teams? Magic Beans? Conditional 6th round picks? (And no, I’m not talking about an offer sheet)

Both those teams are at or nearing their caps (Buffalo doesn’t spend max) and neither of these budding talents are inked yet.

They can borrow Leafs fans for a week in exchange for a player.

Really?

He’s big, American, played in the NCAA, his stats and games played have been increasing every year in the NHL. Career + player in the NHL. He’s not elite Offensive talent, tho, but that’s gonna be hard to get.

I love Kaberle!

It just sucks that he’s going to flex and bust out of here when his contract is done because so many people have been whining about trading one of the best defensemen we’ve ever had for “prospects”

by Jo4nny on Aug 14, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know that he will for sure. It’s certainly a possibility that’ll be worrisome until he re-signs January 2011.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Aug 14, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Thing is

and you know his agent will play it this way…

His next contract is his “I’m gonna retire after this one” contract… even if he doesn’t plan on retiring he wants to make enough money on the next one to warrant retiring VERY comfortably. For that to happen, he’s going to want to make $6.5 million +.

It’s sad to think he’ll ask for that, but honestly he will, and I don’t know if the Leafs will fork over that kind of dough. Burke isn’t known for overpaying on contracts if he doesn’t think a player is worth it. Unless Kaberle has a spectacular season or two, and ends up taking over the captaincy or something, I don’t see him being worth $6.5 or $7 million a year.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

by Steve Burtch on Aug 14, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re probably right. Kabby is going to want one of those 12-year deals like Zetterberg got and Burke is going to shut that down faster than you can say “long term contract”.

I’m glad he’s here until that time, though.

by Jo4nny on Aug 14, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know. By all rights he should have gotten that big of a deal on his current contract.

He will definitely not be giving the Leafs any discount after seeing McCabe get signed for more than him despite being the beneficiary of Kaberle’s skills.

I wish it would be possible to know if Burke discussed not trading Kaberle now in exchange for pre-approval of possibly trading him at either of the next two deadlines.

...on the fence

I really don’t know about this. On one hand you have one of the best offensive defenseman sign sealed and delivered for 2 more yrs at around the $4.5M/yr but I think the cap hit is less(?). He is in his prime now. Good and bad, I guess. But do we really need a guy like him now or can we get one like him later when we need one and reap in some assets as a return and by assets I am not saying it needs to be a top six player, prospect and #1 pick but assets this team needs now throughout the organization. I’m sure there has to be someone make as strong as a case to trade him as there are ones that say keep him.

#15 in your program!

Some of the best moves are the ones you don’t make.

I was and still am all for moving Kaberle for the right deal.

I would move Schenn for the right deal.

I would move the ACC to Whitby if it would help the team.

That deal wasn’t out there or Burke would have done it. I think we can all live with one of the best skating and puck moving d-men we’ve ever had staying another season or two!
