eh

I dunno. We’re not winning the cup this year, maybe it gives some rookies time to gel in the AHL and come up and play even better next year.

GAH I can’t believe I just tried to find a positive in this.

Hold on...

60 points in 66 games in 05/06.
Those are numbers you can’t ignore, not matter how slow he skated or the fact he was a -18.

He claims to be in top shape, and unless he’s a complete fool one would think he’s worked on his foot speed over the last few seasons…

All I’m saying is that stranger things have happened.

Plus I really liked him on the PP. God it would be nice to have a scary PP again…

Technically this is a try out, not a signing…

by The Muppet on Aug 28, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I think this is purely

a matter of Allison wanting a tryout so that he can display to the entire NHL that he is in game shape. He likely thinks, and he’s probably right, that some team with cap issues that wants some scoring punch (hello NY rangers) might want to sign a guy who can put the puck in the net for cheap.

He’ll help a lot of teams in that regard – just not the Maple Leafs.

can this be like last year when the wings gave Brent Sopel a tryout and then he signed with Chicago?

We will give Allison a tryout, and then he’ll be signed by Ottawa.

I never really understood why everyone used to bash him so much the last time he played. All he did was put up points and seemed to be a good teammate. That being said, I am against his signing with the Leafs for the same reason I didn’t mind seeing Mats go last season. Right now it is about letting the kids get ice time and seeing who develops. Every minute Allison would spend on the ice would be a minute a younger Leaf would have to sit.

Is it October yet?

I think it was because he was feasting on the PP while killing the team at ES plus his pathetic shootout attempts.

It's an idiotic move to actually sign him

Bringing him into camp for the Leafs kids to get a feel for playing against REAL NHL competition isn’t a bad plan though.

It’ll let Luke Schenn feel good about his positioning since it’ll give him an extra 5 minutes to move to the right spot before Allison sets up his plays.

At least Stempniak

can actually skate reasonably well.

I don’t see how Allison fits in with Ron Wilson’s concepts of a forecheck – but hey he did run a team built around Joe Thornton with a lot of other fast guys to put the puck in the nets.

I wonder if this is an indication that the Leafs don’t think Grabovski can handle being the number 1 guy for a whole season… insurance plan etc.

I don’t have any problem with this. I’m no Allison fan (do those even exist?) but there is no risk in giving him the chance. If he makes the team he will most likely get paid very little and the Leafs will likely need all the help on offense they can get.
