2009/10 Depth Chart

In pretty graphical form:
Depth_medium

I believe I have included & excluded all of the recent additions & subtractions, respectively. These are not line combinations - simply a look at how things stand as of right now. All things considered, this is a definite upgrade over last year's club. I am in love with our defense and await a move or two to upgrade the offense (especially on RW). Not a lot of news in LeafsLand lately. Anyone wanna play potential lines and pairings again?

Looks good

Devereaux and May haven’t been signed yet. I’d have Orr in place of May.

Your defence looks about the way I expect.

The only changes I’d make to the forward lines would be to swap Grabovski and Stajan, Stempniak and Hanson and then Tlusty for Hanson.

That leaves Hanson, Bozak, and Stalberg starting the year with the Marlies.

If I am reading that right, you’re putting Tlusty as our #1 RW? Followed by Kulemin, Stempniak and Orr?
Goodness, I hope BB has some sort of deal forthcoming.

by somny on Aug 3, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

They do look a little light on the right side, there is Mitchell 2.0 and Hayes in the pipe, but i doubt either of them make the jump this year, probably not even the Marlies

Well, I don’t really consider any of those three lines as #1 but if you want to do it in order of # 2abc then the Poni line becomes #2A so Kulemin is # 1, Tlusty is # 2, and Stempniak is # 3.

But I’ll likely change my mind before the season starts.

So,
2a – Blake / Grabovski / Kulemin
2b – Poni / Stajan / Tlusty
2c – Hagman / Mitchell / Mayers
4 – May? / Primeau / Orr

by somny on Aug 3, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

oops

2a – Poni / Stajan / Tlusty
2b – Blake / Grabovski / Kulemin
2c – Hagman / Mitchell / Mayers
4 – May? / Primeau / Orr

by somny on Aug 3, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No, wait...

2a – Poni / Stajan / Kulemin
2b – Blake / Grabovski / Tlusty
2c – Hagman / Mitchell / Mayers
4 – May? / Primeau / Orr

This is so confusing!

by somny on Aug 3, 2009 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Close

2A – Poni / Grabbo / Kulemin
2B – Blake / Stajan / Tlusty
2C – Hagman / Mitchell / Stempniak
4 – Wallin / Primeau / Orr

But that moves a C to the LW. I am not happy with those lines either other than the top line.

Do you think there’s any chance White will be moved to forward to start the year? It would make room for Exelby and Van Ryn and I actually think he’d fit into our top 9 very well. I doubt he’d score 20 as a forward, but maybe 10-15.

by general borschevsky on Aug 4, 2009 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions

He managed 10 last year in 71GP primarily on defense. I was thinking with a full season at forward, 20 may be possible – but I suspect he wouldn’t be getting the 25+ minutes he was getting on D. All in all, 10-15 would probably be a pretty accurate prediction. I doubt he would see much PP time as a forward unless they shifted him back to the blueline with the man advantage.

Personally I’d like to see White moved up to forward for that very reason. It would give Burke some time to sort out the back end plus it gets the kids some at-bats with the Marlies.

So did anyone notice that in online play on NHL09 Stempniak isn’t actually on a line? You can’t play a ranked vs match with him in the lineup.

Who isn’t actually on a line?

by somny on Aug 4, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll take a stab because it is fun.

Poni-Grabs-Lemon
Blake-Stajan/Bozak-Tlusty
Hagman-Wallin-Hanson/Stempniak
Mayers-Primeau/Mitchell-Orr

The centres pretty much have to line up that way, there is no where else for them to go. Tlusty can play either wing, and there is no point having him on a third line. Hagman is a good guy for a defensive line, and so is Hanson. Stempniak doesn’t fit anywhere so I figure he’ll spend most of the time in the press box. Well, I hope he will. Or I hope he scores 30 goals, but if he did would they count if no one sees them? Stajan should start with Blake but Bozak should get a shot, too. I don’t know what to do with John Mitchell either, he could also make 2b line status. Or 3rd line.

What I do like is the potential PK:
Wallin-Hagman
Mayers-Primeau
Blake-Stajan/Mitchell

I feel pretty good about that.

PP I would put Grabbo with Blake and Kulemin, Poni with Stajan and Tlusty.

If we do sign Zherdev, he might have to take Tlusty’s place. It would be neat to have a line of Stalberg-Bozak-Tlusty completely dominate…the AHL. Teach them how to dominate, then bring them up.

On D I have
Kaberle-Schenn
White-Beauchemin
Finger-Komisarek

That gives you a L shooter and a R shooter on each pairing. I would actually rather see MVR with Komi, but that would be two Rs, and also, he’ll probably be hurt. XLB can rotate in as well with White and MVR depending on whether you want a lighter, faster D or a bigger, heavier D. I would give Schenn some PP time, second unit with White. Kaberle and Beauchemin on the first pairing there.

leafs depth chart - 09-10 The YOUTH takes over

This is based on who DESERVES to be there. None of that: “well he’s under contract so we have to give him his ENTITLEMENT to a position”.

Defence First
Kaberle-Beauchemin
Komisarek-VanRyn
Schenn-Exelby
White-Finger

Forwards 2009-2010
The YOUTH takes over

Blake – Grabovski – Kulemin
Ponikarovsky – Bozak – Tlusty
Mitchell – Kadri- Stefanovich
Primeau – Wallin – Orr

On the outside looking in:
Hanson, Stempniak, Stajan, Stalberg , DiDomenico, Dale Mitchell, Hayes, Slaney, Champagne

Lineup of the future. Do it!

The only two on your outside looking in list that would fall under the category of “contractually obligated to let them suck on the top two lines” are Stempniack and Stajan. I think you gotta keep Mayers for the fourth line, Wallin is third line. Kadri won’t be good enough. No rush. Let him play junior or AHL and learn to dominate. Would love to see Tlusty, Bozak, Stefanovich and Stalberg make it, but unless we trade someone, there is no room. Dale Mitchell, DiDomenico, Hayes and Champagne need another year, too.

I love that there are lots of options though: we can give the best kids a shot, AND let some others develop.
