Two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick for Kessel???
In no way should the Leafs do this. Aren't trades like this the reason why we have sucked for the last bunch of years. I'd be hard pressed to accept a trade of one first rounder for Kessel, but Two. Come on. This isn't Rick Nash, Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf. It's Phil Kessel. While he is a good player, maybe even a great player in the making. What has he done to warrant two first rounders and a second. Hell, I thought we should of got more when the whole swap for Kabby was rumored. Did JFJ somehow become the Chameleon and replace Burke? Please for the love of Tim Horton don't let this scenario go down. I can somehow live with us dealing one first rounder. But if we go this route, I'll cry like a Habs player after playing the Leafs on Oct 1.

This rumor is probably false, mainly because Burke would be the one calling the shots for Kessel, and Burke definitely doesn’t want to give up 2 first rounders for when he can give up only one just by signing

I’m not so sure this is a false offer. MF37 brought up an excellent point about the Bruins having more leverage than people initially thought because Kessel can be stashed on IR, thus, alleviating Boston from their salary cap binds until he comes back in December. That means Chiarelli has a few months to work out either a contract with Kessel or a trade. Chiarelli will simply match any offer sheet and put Kessel immediately on long-term injury.
Plus, the Leafs aren’t the only team bidding for Kessel’s services. Nashville is pushing hard for Kessel and apparently the Rangers are sniffing around. Sather must be crazy though, since no matter how hard he wishes, no one’s going to take Wade Redden off his hands.

Damn forgot about the long term IR, good call

Yeah, I forgot about it, too. I wrote a long post about Kessel’s injury being more serious than maybe we’re all being led, but I still approved of an offer sheet. Boston is going to hold teams under the gun, which they should for a 21 year old potential star. And two first rounders plus more for a guy I’m not sure is going to be fully healthy until likely next season? Tough call.

I doubt Burke would do it. Isn’t 2 first rounders, and a second, more than our first rounder this year and Kaberle? If he goes that high, Nashville is welcome to him.

Nashville will not be giving up two 1st rounders under any circumstances. The highest I see them going is a 1st rounder and one of Blum/Olivier-Roussel/Franson. Bruins ask for Colin Wilson, David Poile hangs up the phone immediately.

im still very worried Stalberg might be included in the Kessel deal should there be one

I guess you have to decide at both their peaks, assuming they both reach it, do you see Stalberg being a star or do you see Kessel as one? Stalberg is still an unknown quality because he grew a few inches after being drafted, but I don’t know if his upside matches the growth spurt in either case. If the Bruins wanted a first round pick and Stalberg, do you make the deal?
I’m inclined to pull the trigger. But I really don’t know how Kessel’s shoulder will recover. It all sounds like a labrum tear due to the rotator cuff tear, and for baseball and tennis players, those are usually devastating injuries. In ayn case, we’re looking at next season to truly assess Kessel’s real value.

Nice knowing you Victor, best of luck!

I would rather give up draft picks than Stalberg. He’s got the makings, and I see him getting in the line-up sometime through this year if anyone faulters up front. (top 6-wise, I’m looking at you, Lee…)
wait
you can see Lee Stempniak??

I know that Chiarelli might have a bit more leverage but there’s no way he can have this much!
This is the kind of trade that you’d make if you’re absolutely sure that the kid will be the same player after he comes back from injury AND continues to improve.

agreed, if Kessel didnt have the surgery I’d be way more comfortable with the idea. But just say he loses a few mph or accuracy points on that laser of a shot he drops 10 goals a year easy

Here's where it makes sense
Kessel must want more money than what would put the compensation at a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd. He must want the amount that would make it four first round picks.

Also
who the HELL pays that much for a guy that is NOT UNDER FREAKIN CONTRACT
RFA or no, I am not paying a premium for a guy that could decide not to sign a contract with my team.

Part of the package would have to be preliminary exclusivity rights to negotiate a contract

Well
If the Leafs traded that and couldn’t sign Kessel then, in the scenario where he wants more than $5.2M, the Leafs would get 4 first round draft picks.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
At that price I’d rather take my chances with the line-up with have this year.
