Boney M, Kerry Fraser and the Leafs: 5 Questions

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending legend Johnny Bower watches Jason Allison get lapped yet again.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending legend Johnny Bower watches Jason Allison get lapped yet again.

As I type this, Elton John’s "Sad Songs" is trapped in my head like a fruit fly slowly drowning in a glass of wine.

Earlier today, one of my kids somehow managed to lodge "I Believe I Can Fly" in my brain pan. That dirge was like a poor mouse caught in the toxic glue-like sticky-trap that is my brain.

When author and mountaineer Joe Simpson broke his leg 26,000 feet up a mountain and was left for dead, dehydrated and hallucinating he said the worst part of his ordeal was he couldn’t get Boney M’s "Brown Girl in the Ring" out of his head.

Why is it that if a song is going to get stuck in your head, odds are it will be a bad one? Why can't it be a great song that takes root, putting a smile on your face?

After the jump, it's the training camp style return of five questions - an exhibition match of sorts featuring bad music, bad decisions, great goals and hair so bad it's good (or is it hair so good it's bad?)

Star-divide

It's no "Brown Girl in the Ring" but when the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994, breaking a 54 year drought, the AV system at Madison Square Garden launched into "These Are Days" by hockey arena favourites The 10,000 Maniacs followed by Tina Turner's "Simply the Best"

Not a pretty sonic combination nor the ideal songs that I want to associate with such an important and frankly historic hockey moment. Now, I'm not saying the Leafs are going to win the cup, but thinking about possible high lights in the Leafs' season...

1. What's the one piece of music that the ACC staff are likely to play that would absolutely ruin a great Leafs moment for you?

☆ ☆ ☆

On Saturday, Brian Murray and Doug Wilson worked out a deal for disgruntled winger Dany Heatley. San Jose sent promising winger Milan Michalek and has-been Jonathon Cheechoo to the town-that-fun-forgot in return for Heatley.

Since scoring 56 goals in 2006, Cheechoo's stats line looks like an earnings report from Nortel. He put up 12 goals in 2008-09, one shy of $4.2 million dollar man and new team mate Mike Fisher. Combined, Fish and Cheechoo earn $7.2 million and produced all of 25 goals last season. With numbers like that it's a shame they aren't a foot shorter and 50 lbs lighter or else Murray could likely trade the pair to Bob Gainey for a pretty handsome return.

Michalek is a fine young talent and will be an excellent addition to the Sens. He's been a threat to score 25 the last three years but the bigger question remains:

2. Will Michalek and Cheechoo combine to score more goals than Dany Heatley this year?

☆ ☆ ☆

Earlier this summer, fellow Leafs blogger Leaf and Lion posted what he thought might be the greatest Leaf goal of all time.

I don’t know if his choice even cracks my top five, possibly even my top 10:

  • Lanny McDonald eliminates the New York Islanders in OT
  • Bobby Baun wins the Cup on a broken ankle in 1964
  • Doug Gilmour’s double wrap-around against St. Louis
  • Mike Krushelnyski's New Years Eve shoot-out goal againt Moscow Dynamo in 1990
  • Mats Sundin’s 500th against Calgary
  • Rick Vaive becomes the first Leaf to score 50 goals in a season
  • Andy Wozniewski banks one in off the back boards against Atlanta
  • Borschevsky eliminates the Red Wings
  • Wendel Clark’s hat-trick goal to force OT against the Kings
  • Any of the 128 goals Mike Foligno scored that bounced in off his ass (followed by that spectacular leap of his - funny how Don Cherry never brought up that particular post-goal celebration routine)

Leaf and Lion poses an excellent question with no right answer but...

3. What, in your opinion, is the greatest Leaf goal ever scored?

☆ ☆ ☆

The price for Kessel is rising faster than the scales under Kyle Wellwood. The latest rumours have the Leafs offering two (2!) first round picks, in addition to a second and a third rounder.

This begs the question(s):

4. How quickly do you want the Leafs to field a competitive team? And do you think efforts to compete sooner rather than later might make the Leafs competitive but prove so costly as to prohibit them from developing into an elite team?

☆ ☆ ☆

Kerry Fraser has announced that he will retire as a NHL referee after the 2009-10 season.

An argument could be made that this comes about 17 years too late.

Thinking of his unique blend of skills, blindness and hair...

5. What occupation do you think Fraser is best suited for once his work as a NHL referee comes to an end?

1 – U2 – beautiful day, it will be the one time I actually enjoy a U2 song, either that or Zombie nation because that seems to be the go-to

2- No, both will max out at 25 while Heatly will probably rack up close to 60 with Jumbo Joe as his pivot

3-The Borschevsky eliminating the Wings goal, only because I was so bat shit delirious after the dougie double wrap around I dont remember actually seeing it, just the replays

4-I’d like to see the Leafs cup contenders next season or the one after that, unless magic happens its not going to happen this season so there is no use rushing it

5- attack dog dummy

60 goals?

really? Against tougher defense in the west? Is Thornton that much better than Spezza?
I don’t think so.

45-50 will be his max.

yeah

I’ve just been reading this everywhere, and I think people are forgetting that Heatley had Spezza- a pretty good playmaker himself- passing him the puck. Not a huge difference between him and Thornton, I don’t think.

we hate the Sens, we’re not blind to the talent they possess (we’ll also readily admit that Phillip-Volchenkov is a good shut down pair)

I think Thornton is a better play maker than Spezza, he is also a better goal scorer.Heatly can pass pretty good himself so the combination will be a good back and forth.
Joe is also better at passing from traffic as he can just punch through it and he also isnt as prone to poor positioning and half assed drop passes like Spezza.
While Spezza is no slouch i think Thornton is just a better player and will contribute more to padding Heatlys stats.
And lets not forget throwing Marleau and Boyle into that little party

Spezza is the type of player that forces fans to slit their wrists. Flashes of brilliance, frustratingly inconsistent, thinks that he can survive on talent alone, never seen a back check that couldn’t be abandoned. I am happy he plays in Ottawa.

by blue with age on Sep 14, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

Spezza has a lot of problems still, but he’s still a heck of a playmaker. Personally, I think he’s a better goal scorer than Thornton.
I just don’t see Heatley’s stats improving that much with the Sharks over the Sens.

As far as the goal goes I can only think of Sundin’s 500th. Now granted I may be a bit of youngin to remember the rest but having Sundin score number 500, on his 3rd goal of the game, in overtime, short-handed against Kipper?

That was one heck of a goal.

1 – haha Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing and there’s precedent among the MLSE family of clubs. In the last game of the inaugural season Danny Dichio scored in injury time to salvage a tie. As fans flooded the field and the crowd rocked in celebration that song came over the PA.

2 – Heatley is going to crack 40 without breaking a sweat. I think that sens’ pair can come close to matching that.

3 – Borchevsky’s goal because that was the first moment of success for my generation of fans.

4 – The team will be competitive this year, a contender within 3 seasons at most or I’ll cry but I am not liking the increase in price for Kessel. I do think, and Washington is a good case, that first rounders are a great place to get elite players. As much as possible these need to be protected. Trading one for Kessel is like using a draft pick to select a 30 goal scorer. Trading two gets a little tougher.

5 – Guide Dog trainer.

sure it can. I can argue that Kessel’s goal total last season is suspiciously high considering his totals of 11 and 18 the years before. His sudden jump in shooting percentage is also suspect, considering his rather bad totals in previous years.

I can argue that players will always have career years on teams that achieve sudden success, and Boston rode breakout seasons of a half dozen young guys to a Conference championship, which is suspicious (and a similar thing happened in Montreal a year before).

I can argue that Kessel, like Patrick Sharp, is a sniper that needs to play with an excellent playmaker to excel, that the Leafs don’t have one of those or a guarantee that one will come through, and that if he doesn’t produce in a season or two while we stock up on talent that he’ll be run out of town regardless.

I can argue that the guy was slammed for his attitude and me-first play before he came to the NHL, and the fact that he’s holding out on his team is only evidence of that. I would also say that the Bruins capping themselves out signing their other RFAs/UFAs without signing him is more evidence that they don’t feel he’s worth it.

There’s lots of reasons to be wary of Kessel, not the least of which is the fact that the Leafs would be buying high. Imagine the surprise of a team that might have offer-sheeted Cheechoo in the summer of ’06.

I’m not saying that Burke shouldn’t try, or that Kessel will absolutely bust. But there’s all sorts of reasonable arguments as to why three high-round draft picks is too much for the guy (and I don’t believe that the Leafs won’t possibly be in a good draft position next year).

1. The theme song from Perfect Strangers

2. I figure Heatley’s good for 45, and given the new Sens will get tons of ice time, it’ll finish dead even

3. Going off the board on this one, I was always big on Dougie’s tying goal in game 7 vs Detroit with two minutes and change left. As a kid watching the game I remember being in total despair after Drake’s go-ahead goal, and if Wendel’s pass had hit Bob Rouse instead we might not have all those other great playoff memories from 93. Not to say Rouse didn’t rock. He already had a goal that game.

4. I think they’re competitive as of this year, competing for a playoff spot anyway. Kessel’s price tag is damn high, but its not like Burke’s been throwing around draft picks for just anyone. I figure it’ll be a steady build and then once they’re conference contenders Burke will start dishing the futures around

1. Depend on the moment – that being said, pretty much anything by Nickelback or Beyonce (and yes, I HAVE heard Beyonce go at a professional hockey game – it was sad) have the capacity to even ruin us winning the Stanley Cup. Although strangely amusing for introducing the Lollipop Guild.
*edit: I’m inclined to agree with the Perfect Strangers theme – that would just be wrong.

2) No. But only because Joe Thornton will be continually bouncing pucks off Heatley’s head and into the opposing net.

3) I cannot remember who scored the goal. It wasn’t a pretty goal, it wasn’t the most beautiful, but I remember like it was yesterday. Winning goal, 3-2 in triple OT over the Sens in the 2002 playoffs.

4) I want our team to be competitive now – but not at the cost of being competitive in the future. As to the cost for Kessel – he’s a proven elite forward – which, frankly, no team can win without in this league. The cost of 4 draft picks (including 2 firsts) is high, but if you consider the fact that next years draft is questionable, and it’s unlikely we’d be picking in the top ten – doubly so for the following year (where we are most likely to get a player of Kessels calibre) – he is a player we can build around. If we can get him signed for reasonable money long term – well worth it.

5) Ottawa Senators head coach.

1. Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

2. No, Heatley is just about a guaranteed lock for 50+ with Thorton feeding him the puck, and the fact that he should actually give a shit this season. My bet is that he ends Ovie’s streak and wins the Rocket Richard trophy with somewhere around 60. Michalek and Cheechoo put up 50 combined tops.

3. Sundin’s 500th. It’s all about the ding.

4. Sooner. I hate the idea of tanking to get good. Tanking has only worked for two teams, Pittsburgh and to a lesser extent Washington, and that’s because of the luck of such talent being available in their drafts. I still believe that the best way to get better is through in-house development and incremental growth, backed up by good free agent pickups.

3. Of the ones I’ve seen, my favorite goal: Greg Terrion penalty shot in ’83; biggest goal likely Lanny eliminating the Islanders

4. I don’t think the Leafs will be competitive for another year (they may compete for 8th this year, but that doesn’t make them “competitive”). If they trade 2 1sts for Kessel, I think it will set them back as it depletes the inventory of what can be used for trade bait when it’s time for this team to get that last little push over the cliff

2. With 12 from Cheechoo, it’ll be hard for Michalak to keep pace with Heatley.

3. Clark’s goal, because I really wasn’t expecting it and it was wonderful to see the guy come through when he wanted to most. And I was alive to see it.

4. This year. They can contend later, but it’s always time to be competitive. I would not, however, give up two first round picks for a player Boston evidently doesn’t want.

No. 1 – You can’t ruin that moment. i don’t care if they play “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” – nobody will hear it anyway.

No. 2 – Not unless Heatley gets injured. Or Thornton does.

No. 3 – Leaning toward Wendel’s goal as the extra skater in 1993. That’s my fave. But you can’t really beat an OT Cup Winner as blue with age says above. (Note – that captain is Butch Bouchard, and he’s trying to cover for #10 Tom Johnson, who’s tied up behind the net with Howie Meeker.)

No. 4 – I want them to be competitive now. I expect it in maybe a couple of years or so. I have no sense whether this group will ever really challenge. It’s too early.

No. 5 – Meh – anything where he can’t do damage.

3. The only one I distinctly remember is Mats’ 500th goal, so that one wins. That said, I have since watched Wendel’s goal in 1993, and that one is rather glorious as well.

4. I think in another year or two they will be comptetitive. This year will be a large learning curve, so I am not expecting a lot.

1. Thunderstruck, because they play it way too much and it’s getting annoying.

2. Yeah, and they’ll actually play defense too!

1. Cotton Eye Joe

2. Not a chance, unless injury comes into play Heatley will score 50-60

3. How’s about that 1-0 OT goal Sundin scored in Game 1 of the 1st Round against Ottawa that led to the big underdog sweep?

4. All about the ’tenders. If the Monster is the real deal we could be surprised sooner rather than later. See Cujo circa 1998.

1. Taylor Swift- I hate her music more than Kanye does

2. I am going to go off the board and say yes they will – Heatley is an asshat

3. I loved the 500 Sundin goal.. but the playoffs are soo much more important I would have to go with the double Dougie

4. 2 seasons from now – deep run for the cup

And you wouldn’t remember the song anyways. When BU scored in OT against Miami I remember yelling as loud as I could and jumping up and down and hugging people and I have no recollection of there being any sound.

I vividly remember 10,000 maniacs in ’94 – a definite WTF moment. Could have been because I hated both the rangers and the ’nucks, so it stood out more clearly.

1- Beautiful Day by U2. Man I hate that song
2- Not a chance.
3- The first one that came to mind was Sundin against Ottawa in the 2001 playoffs
4- I don’t like the idea of an indefinite rebuild. Two years and we should be looking at a deep playoff run.

1. Any Nickelback song.

2. Heatley scored more than Cheechoo and Michalek combined when they were with Thornton and Marleau, so he should have no problem doing it again.

3. Mats Sundin scoring with about 20 seconds left against Carolina in 2002 to tie the game and extend the series a little more…

4. Realistically…start with the 2010-11 season.

1. something by Kanye West…too soon?
2. I say it will be close, with the pair of new Sens beating Heatley when his knee explodes when he is trampled after winning the gold medal
3. The Dougie special, I remember it vividly, jumping off the sofa. A few others listed are just as important. My dad (another immigrant who learned to love the Leafs) always talked about the Baun goal. “He scored on a broken leg. That man was a beast.”
4. I figure each of the next 3 seasons will be staging points to a solid team with real aspirations, but we might knock in less. Not this season.

1) Anything by the Jonas Brothers

2) about 45-50 goals (most of them by Michalek)

3) Mats’ 500th goal

4) This season or next season the leafs find their way back into the playoff picture

1. A Guns And Roses Song. Apparently they are Gods of rock. I could never understand why.
2. I’m probably dead wrong and talking with my heart here, but I’d rather have Cheechoo and Michalek, they might not score more goals they’ll bring more heart and character.
3. The Borschevsky goal. I was on a beer run(literally) to the kitchen as the play developed and ended up seeing the goal sliding into the living room with 3 beers in my hands overflowing everywhere. Also, don’t remember the game but Wendel scoring on a penalty shot with a slapshot was beautiful – ‘I don’t even need to put a move on you, I’m Wendel Clark’.
4. I’m sold on rebuilding. Even in the pre-lockout Quinn era when the Leafs could always buy free agents to fill holes I wanted to see more home developed players. Could be that Kessel will end up being better than all current Leaf prospects and their next three 1st rounders but I’m excited about guys like Tlusty and Stalberg and Kadri. And nothing sucks more than a draft in which your team doesn’t pick until the 3rd round, and in the Leafs case it would probably suck just as much for TSN. On the other hand the guys who used to be ‘players of the future’ with teams like LA and Edmonton are nearing retirement age now. Rebuild or Rut?

1. Gotta agree with Nickelback. Hate them so much…such rage. Katy Perry too…holy shit. Anyway….
2. Heatley wins, though it’ll be close. I may be dumb but I expect a rebound from Cheechoo and some average production. I see those two combining for 40-45 and Heatley likely scoring 50 or so.
3. Don’t know how you can go against a guy scoring the cup winning goal on a busted ankle, so that’s my pick. But the one I remember clearest is the Boreshevsky goal to eliminate the Wings. I had some family staying at the time from Ottawa and they hated the Leafs and were sitting with my buddy and me watching the game and slagging the Leafs all the way through it. When the chef scored we celebrated loudly and rudely.
4. Kessel is a sexy pick, and certainly the type of player Leaf fans have been aching for: a bona-fide top winger with speed and scoring ability. But I’m really weary of giving up more than one first rounder to get him. As Chemmy said before, and I agree, 1 first rounder is perfectly justifiable, but 2 would be a definite overpayment IMO. I’m content to wait this out and see what a rebuilt scouting staff under Burke and Nonis (for as long as he’s here) can create with our own picks.

#2. Should read…and some average production out of Michalek. I think he’s a bit overrated.

My Cheechoo prediiction is that the first two months his production will be up, seeing as he’s playing not only in his country of birth, but his province of birth as well. Then the real-life fact that he is playing for the Sens will sink in, slowly but surely, and by season’s end he’ll be having the worst season of his career. Whereupon he will demand a trade to Toronto and go on to win 3 more Rocket Richard trophies.
