Re: Kadri
Nasty deking notwithstanding, he should not make this team.
He’s too young, and giving him garbage minutes on the fourth line will do nothing. He needs to be a top six player and he’s just not an NHL top six player at this point. If he’s one of the org’s best offensive players now, this team has big problems and both those Kessel picks will be in the lottery.
Maybe I’m biased (I didn’t think Schenn should have made the team either) but I don’t want to burn off a year of Kadri’s entry level deal to watch him lose his confidence and get pushed around by NHL goons.
Kadri’s main issue is that he is still not strong enough, in the corners and along the boards he is very easy to push off the puck, in the NHL regular season he would be out matched, he isnt yet experienced enough to counter the size factor so he needs to go back to junior and work on both his strength and experience.

And Schenn did just fine last year, which makes me think that he learned more playing against NHLers than he would have if he had stayed back in Junior, so I think the move wasn’t unwarranted, entry level contract expiration date notwithstanding.
Schenn is a much different case than Kadri, he is much bigger and stronger, I would also say he was farther along in his total development last year than Kadri currently is,

Yeah, Schenn was miles ahead of Kadri in terms of his hockey sense, positioning, etc. He was incredibly mature as a player for his age. Kadri may have more talent, but he’s got a ton to learn and he should be learning it in junior.
Also, it’s worth noting that Schenn made a Leafs team that was rebuilding, and Kadri is trying to make a team that expects a playoff spot.
Down Goes Brown - Unapologetically nostalgic for the past. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future.

not to mention
Schenn was already north of 200 lbs as a 19 year old. He’s big.
Kadri has been easy to knock off the puck on occasion. Him going back down to play in the O for one final season will give him the time to develop the upper body strength he’s going to need to compete with men. at the same time, he’ll be putting up 900 goals and 2800 assists…

Yeah, Kadri’s not much bigger than I am. I would describe myself as a small player even in men’s league hockey.

Ron Wilson had some interesting remarks about Kadri and his 170lb frame in the post game newser.
00:14 talks about Kadri’s tying goal
00:30 dismisses Berger
00:45 says Kadri and Bozak could eventually be “magical players”
01:20 thinks Kadri can get 100 points in the OHL
07:15 suspected Kadri would be dynamic at the NHL level
07:30 How many hits can Kadri take? The importance of getting stronger, etc.
The whole vid is really worth a look, I totally agree with Wilson’s take on fighting after a clean hit (at the 8:30ish mark)
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
Couldn’t agree more on this analysis.
I believe in Kadri, I think he will be a great Leaf. His talent when allowed to shine has been there for all to see. But the NHL is an unforgiving league, and they take kids not ready for prime time, eat them up and spit them out. I don’t want to see Kadri’s confidence crushed by that. Let him dominate in London and at the WJHC and then see what next season brings.
Being a Leaf fan here requires one to be sufficiently lubricated... and truculent!
Berger: “Did you have some inclination he might do that [Kadri tying the game] by putting him out there…”
Wilson: [pause, look of being totally fed up. Strikes the tone of a teenager saying “Well duh.”] “Well yeah, that’s why you put him out there at that point. I had a lot of young guys out there and you want to see how they react in a situation like that.”
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
I’m about 6 foot and around 165 lb right now. If you saw me you’d call me a rail. Kadri seriously needs to bulk up.

another reason Dale Mitchell didnt get a longer look, he’s built like me (5’9, 210) but he isnt at the skill level yet to play in the nhl

His secondary issue is trying junior moves against pros far too often. He’ll benefit tremendously from another year of development both in filling out his frame and creativity.

SouthLeast (lol) captains:
Washington: Chris “who?” Clark
Atlanta: Ilya “Please come back we need you” Kovalchuk
Florida: Brian “Not quite Bouwmeester” McCabe
And the two teams that have a cup have semi-legit (Rod the Bod) and legit (Vinnie) captains. VERY INTERESTING

Oh yeah, a one way player who never crosses his own blue line twice in a game makes for a great team captain.

I heard a rumor they offered him League Maximum to stay, and he still didn’t sign.
I’m wondering how many Toronto draft picks it would take to rent him at the deadline.
Savard-Kovalchuk has been good before…

you dont have the cap space, but that would be a wicked duo for a playoff run.
unless the Bruins win the cup after that it would be a waist of assets when Nashville offers him a 15 year 100 mil contract

Kovalchuck- Kadri – Kessel
Who’s backchecking? That line’s +/- would be horrendous!
"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"
with Beaucheminen being amazing and the Monster standing tall, it wont be so bad,
that line would be good for 100 goals easy
Refusing To Bow To Your Standards Since 2006
by JaredFromLondon on Sep 23, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah 100 goals for and 100 goals against. I’d have a tremendous amount of pity for the goalie behind that forward line. The Monster would literally have to be Luongo to put up respectable numbers with no forward backchecking.
"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"
Kadri will back check by the time he’s in the NHL, Kessel maybe if he gets with the program, there is no hope for Kovalchuck doing that though

I have faith in Kadri and a little less in Kessel learning a two-way game, they are still young. Kovy’s hopeless in that regard, but as long as he plays on a line with someone who is defensively responsible it evens out.
"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"
indeed, but the offensive production out of that line, especially with a Kaberle feeding them the break out pass is scary awesome.
that saying, the Leafs are hard pressed to get kovalchuk

Roughly 9.4 million in cap space will be gone after this year just with Toskala, Stempniak and Van Ryn. You can keep your dream alive!
"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"
yeah, but there are loooots of holes to fill, resignings etc
Refusing To Bow To Your Standards Since 2006

That’s just from those 3 players though so you could only have to replace those 3 players with that money as the other UFA’s replace themselves.
If Monster performs well he and a low cost backup replace Toskala. Kovy replaces Stempniak and any Van Ryn is replaced by a Crash Test Dummy.
"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"
yah, but there is also re-signing Tlusty and Kulemin who are RFAs not to mention a few others

Well, won’t be paying them much if they are on 2 way deals with the Marlies…
Bad to say it, but neither has earned a spot with the Leafs this year. The only reason they got the opportunity last year is that we had very little depth
