Leafs 2 Red Wings 1: Waive Toskala

The facts: Vesa Toskala lets in softies.

Jonas Gustavsson does this:

Power play goals from Stalberg and Gunnarsson bail out Vesa "dogshit" Toskala and power the Leafs to another preseason win. Discuss!

and he looked damn good doing it. He moved well laterally, deflected rebounds away from danger, did a good job tracking the puck through screens and covers a whole lot of the net especially in his butterfly.

I was looking to see if he would be favouring his groin after the procedure but he looked fresh and comfortable in there. Wouldn’t even have known that he just had a heart procedure.

Yeah. What?

Hey it’s Justin from The Goalie Guild. I would just like to say that from a strictly scouting perspective…ummm…yeahhh that’s the type of save you can’t teach. Sick.

When I look at the leg extension involved in that save from the overhead camera it’s not the distance his right leg covers that’s amazing, but the angle at which it travels from his body to the post. Look at it and pause it. It’s insanity. He cuts off angles like I’ve really never seen before…his style is unique for sure. Sick.

It's Obvious

Yeah…I mean pre-season game or not, it’s really obvious that Gustavsson has elite skills. But it’s more the combination of size and quick feet that make him so good. It’s exactly like what fans see when they watch Craig Anderson for the first time live. They both have a presence in the crease that can’t be overlooked. I’d think after a few months that Gus-Gust

But like every other elite goalie in this league, the game is pretty much 90% mental. I hope he can show some consistency when points are on the line. Nevertheless, I can’t wait to see how many games he wins this year!

His size is such a change from Toskala. Toskala gets lost in the traffic. Gustavsson wades in and sees everything.

by PPP on Sep 26, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I noticed that also from watching the games on NHLNetwork. Definitely looks stronger and sharper though.

Because of his injuries and his size, it’s very tough to say Toskala is going to out-perform Gustavsson, no matter how much I like them both. Straight up, hip injuries and meniscus (knee) tears are killer on goalies and Jonas has a crazy presence in there. To me, since the day Gustavsson signed, it became a question of when he takes over, not if.

it’s not the only measure of a goalie’s ability. And as with all percentages, the number of shots faced can greatly affect how much the percentage changes with each goal against.

"Hey, when I was traded, it was just a draft pick! What ever would you complain about if New Jersey had picked Scott Lachance?"

I don’t have a hate on for Toskala, but if Jonas can play well on his starts and outplay Vesa, the only logical conclusion is that this is Vesa’s last year.

Jonas is younger, bigger and more positionally sound. Also he is confidant and has that intense attitude. I remember Toskala after a bad loss(there were lots of them) and he was just shrugging them off.

when Jonas loses a game, I will be interested to see if he shows some anger at himself.. and disappointment..

I’m not turning on anybody. But the biggest part of goaltending is confidence. Not only does a goaltender have to have confidence in himself, but his teammates have confidence in him, and so do the fans.

I had that confidence in Potvin.
I had that confidence in Joseph.
I had that confidence in Belfour.
I feel like I’m going to have that confidence in Gustavsson.

When you add up the terrible sv%, the brutal goals he let in with regularity last year, the fact that Ron Wilson himself has said that this year he has worked much, much harder than he did last year, the fact that Brian Burke called him out publicly for being terrible, and the fact that he hid his injury until said calling out it is mind-boggling that he can have so much confidence in him.

Of course, when you consider that he can’t quite call him dog shit and expect to get good play out of him or turn him into a marketable asset it makes a little more sense.
