If You Think Toskala is an NHL Goalie You Are a Moron

Vesa Toskala [Save %:0.708] [Saves: 17] [Shots: 24]

With literally any other goalie on any team anywhere in their depth chart this is a win for the Leafs. Disgusting.

Who is this fucking douchebag saying the Leafs were tired and won’t be proud of their efforts? They scored six fucking goals.

This is entirely on Toskala.

I hear you, but think it through a little.

Burke always speaks highly of guys before he ships them out. You know that Burke and Wilson have been talking up Toskala. There’s obviously a reason we have 3 goalies.

I think they just want Tosk to do something worth talking about so that some desparate team sees worth in him.

Either that or he had a bad game. He did well the other night with the shootout win.

by Kohma on Sep 27, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d rather prefer last season’s form where he could actually stop 87% of the shots. 70% is pure garbage. Whats the point of being good at a shootout when you can’t get there. Leafs tried their best to bail him out tonight. he just kept letting weak shit going past him.

I checked the score at NHL.com and was surprised to see a 7-6 final with Toskala getting burned for 4 in the 3rd. Came over here prepared to ask, “What the heck happened?” but the headline quelled that Q.

I wonder if any media will have the stones to ask Burke/Wilson about their “no jobs are safe” line? Starters should be Gustavsson and Joey Mac.

This is really sad, but it’s not a disaster.

The Vesa is obviously not ready, but this is PRESEASON and that’s what PRESEASON is for. So far he hasn’t cost the team any points in the standings. If he plays like this in October, Gustavsson will be the starter by November. If he plays this way as a back up, MacDonanld will be on the team by Christmas.

I still believe he can bounce back, but there’s pressure on him now like never before. In a way I think that’s good. I think he’ll respond to the pressure and won’t fold. Otherwise, Gustavsson takes over, and that’s just fine as well.

No, I think I’m serious. I think it’s too early to get too down on the Vesa. I also can’t believe that I’m thinking that in the PRESEASON.

Vesa has not played since March 3rd. Now he just plays 6 periods of hockey spread out over 3 consecutive days. He had a terrible game. It’s not the end of the road though. Hopefully, it’s just the beginning.

While coming off of a hip surgery and then having a new goaltending coach tell you, that you need to change your style can’t be easy. Not to mention a leafs nation that expects superb tenders do to being spoiled with the likes of cujo and Eddie it’s pretty easy to see how one could crumple worse than a suit purchased at giant tiger. This is However no excuse for Toskola. Burke needs to send him down to the marlies to develop his new style, he may not make it to the marlies but if that’s the case it wasn’t ment to be.

I’m not sure it’s so wise to do though.

I don’t doubt he’ll be given plenty of chances, but if he plays this well, he’s not going to give Wilson much choice but to start yanking him from games. If that’s happening often, the opportunities are going to run out very quickly.

In all seriousness, I can understand the argument that he’s coming from a long layoff and a hefty surgery. But that’s at best an argument for keeping him on the roster. If anything, it’s an argument against giving him the early starts, because he clearly hasn’t recovered enough to play up to any kind of standards.

personally

I think it means he should go to the AHL on a conditioning stint, give him some time to rediscover his game…

It will be a one-two punch, build up the Habs, knock down the Leafs…

No two franchises in the NHL have undergone heavier makeovers this off-season than the Leafs and Habs. One team looked to the future and decided small and skilled was the way to go, the other looked to the past and decided smashmouth hockey and old fashion goonery was in order. Last night, small and skilled scored a decisive victory in handing the Leafs a 8-4 loss (despite being held to just 10 shots on net).

It's one game..

..but the problem is that you can’t say you haven’t felt like this before with Tosk. He had surgeries, he’s got Allaire now, it’s not necessarily Tosk of last year. Burke absolutely has to get him playing, and well, as fast as he can, keep or shop. Such a knee-jerk reaction is so “us.”

And I thought I was being generous with one month. The reason I even said that was not because of Toskala’s play, but has to do with taking things slow with Gustavsson. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if MacDonald was the backup and Gustavsson goes to the Marlies for a month or two.

Look, as much as Toskala sucked tonight....

First off
a) give him a bit of time to get adjusted to the game. Someone did make a good point that he hasn’t been playing since March. If so, yeah, a month of starts seems like a good idea.
b) What did we hire Allaire for? Let’s hope he can get some improvement out of Toskala
c) Gustavsson played three damn periods. I know the picture would look different if he hadn’t had that heart trouble, but we still really don’t know how good he is.
d) I’m not an expert on the whole situation, but can we just waive Toskala and get him off our salary cap permanently? If we waive him does he just become an UFA and he’s off our books?

by Peter de Chatham on Sep 27, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If the Leafs waive him one of two things happen: he gets claimed by another team (doubtful, given his $4M/year salary) OR he goes unclaimed and reports to the Marlies.

In both instances, his cap hit doesn’t count against the Leafs.

In the event that a goalie gets hurt and Toskala gets recalled one of two things happen: he gets claimed – and the Leafs must pay 50% of his salary (which also goes against the Leafs’ cap) for the length of his contract OR he goes unclaimed and plays for the Leafs (with his salary going against the Leafs cap).

a) This isn’t a case of him being mediocre for a single pre-season. He was mediocre in his first year and terrible in his second
b) we hire Allaire to make the goalies good going forward. He didn’t waste his time with Pogge because he wasn’t part of the future so I don’t see him working too long on Toskala when Wilson has already said that he’s struggling to pick up what he’s being taught.
c) sure, only three periods. But we have one year of figuring things out? So if Toskala is struggling so much why not give him a conditioning stint and more time with Allaire.
d) No, if we send him down he goes off the cap. If the Leafs try to bring him back up and he’s claimed he’ll count for half of what’s left towards the cap for the rest of the season.

I know there are definite issues with throwing Gustavsson in especially in light of the short pre-season and I get that Toskala is Wilson’d boy but I hope to God that the leash is short.

My thought on the whole thing is that Toskala just shouldn’t be THIS bad. I think what was left of his confidence since the Monster and Allaire and even Wallin signed has either sucked out what was left of his desire to compete and win for the Leafs, or he truly cannont, under any circumstances, accept being a backup, even when it’s of his doing. He know the writing is on the wall and it’s over. He just chose not to wait until he was actually released or traded to stop caring.
I think he’s fully broken as far as this team is concerned and there’s no fixing it.

Right now, Toskala’s worth about as much as Raycroft, who’s playing for Vancouver at 500,000, the minimum salary. Noone wants Raycroft for 500K, ergo, noone will want to pick up Toskala for 2 mil, even if the leafs pay the other 2.

There’s a difference. The Red Wings picked up most of their team before the lockout; they were the first to capitalize on Sweden scouting, that well’s gone dry now. The Devils won before the lockout, they don’t count. Also, I’ve been following “Down Goes Brown’s” advice; I just read his blog on the Kessel trade:

“Optimism: You believe in Phil Kessel.
Pessimism: I believe in Phil Kessel.
Optimism: The future 40-goal man.
Pessimism: The future 40-goal man… with a huge contract, a bad shoulder, zero toughness, no defence, and a terrible attitude.
Optimism: …
Pessimism: But he does have one good year to his name.
Optimism: Pass the bottle.
Pessimism: Bottoms up, my friend.”

Well, our entire future doesn’t rest on Kessel, just as it doesn’t rest on the Monster. It rests on the building of a team that will take the Cup no matter what is in their way. And since we don’t do NTCs anymore, we aren’t hand-cuffed.

And how many Stanley Cups have Chicago, NYI, and LA Kings won so far?
I disagree wholeheartedly. To be honest, I find the idea of the success in tanking to be greatly exaggerated. Going to a cliché here, but correlation does not equal causation. Just because Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup does not mean tanking is the only surefire method to build a contender. Building a contender requires a whole litany of factors, few of which includes proper player development and prudent free agent signings. Tanking causes a lot of salary cap implications down the line and last I checked, the salary cap isn’t going to increase markedly in the next few years.

What I will allow is that obtaining multiple first rounds is as important of a strategy than trying to bottom out for the chance of a top pick. Draft picks aren’t guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination, so probability dictates the more chances a team has to pick players, better the result of finding a good/great/elite player.

As I’ve said before, Brian Burke is one of the highest paid executives in all of professional sports. If he can’t build a team without the aid of top-5 picks in the five years of his tenure, why in the world are the Leafs paying him that much? If the decision was to tank every season until the Leafs draft every so-called elite player, it’s quite superfluous to hire an expensive executive to wait on a horrendous team for several years so he can accumulate high draft picks.

And players such as those are going to command big time money anyway, so this claim that Chicago will become big-time playoff contenders isn’t even guaranteed.

Look, I’m a bit drunk right now, so forgive me for being a pessimist. But right now, our goaltending future is down to an upproven Swede, the Islander’s castaway, and Toskala. We have zero goaltending prospects. Zero! Dammit!

Toskala’s game tonight has me plenty upset. My vision in my head of Toskala was him having a solid year under Allaire’s coaching, getting traded for a pair of 2nd rounders at the deadline, and it’d all be good. But now we get nothing for him….

Be pissed at JFJ for that, he traded away the wrong prospect. Burke has done a HELL of a lot of good to this team. Stop being fuckin pessimistic and start acting like a fuckin fan and enough of this tanking bullshit

I think we have:
1) the best goalie in the world who hasn’t played an NHL game yet.
2) a very good backup who did some great work for a horrible team last year.
3) lot’s of flexibility to acquire a Toskala replacement.
4) a team that great goalies will want to play for.

“Islanders’ castaway” isn’t as bad as it sounds. Remember, they replaced him with two NHL starters to back up the one they already had. A goalie who doesn’t get invited to a party already attended by Biron, Roloson, and the remaining pieces of DiPietro can still be quite good. MacDonald’s numbers were pretty respectable considering the terrible team in front of him. Certainly better than Toskala’s were behind a better team. If you have to depend on one or the other, I’d take MacDonald easily, and that’s only if Gustavsson doesn’t pan out.

And getting nothing for Toskala would still be addition by subtraction.

Also, it’s blatantly obvious that Joey Mac is delighted and motivated to play for the Leafs, much more than he ever was or would be for the Islanders.

So? Drafting Goaltending’s a bit of voodoo to begin with.

Ligthning will be serious playoff contenders lucky to not completely implode and go bankrupt this year.

Yet another side-effect of a tanking team.

Tavares will, in all likelihood, be an Islander until 1 min. after his RFA kicks in, unless they are prepared to pay him a crippling amount of money. Tank teams do not draw player loyalty, let alone fan loyalty.

Kadri is going to be a special player from what he’s shown so far. He’s got good vision, very strong with the puck, and his individual talent is phenomenal. Bulk up, get some more exp, and develop a well rounded game, and paired with how he plays with an edge, he is going to be a beauty. We haven’t picked in the top 3 for our rebuild, and still have great prospects coming up.

just another bit of pessimism…

look at the top fifty NHL prospects on hockeysfuture.com

How many of them are with the Leafs?

by Peter de Chatham on Sep 28, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

The Penguins won the Cup because they tanked. The Blackhawks may win the cup this year, also because they tanked. The Islanders and Lightning and Kings have someone to build around, because they tanked. We needed to goddamn well tank! We could have had Tavares.. Tavares!!!!!!

The Penguins won the Cup because they won an unprecedented lottery draw for sidney crosby.

Hockeysfuture also doesn’t have a dedicated staff of team prospects writers. For quite awhile before the Leafs never had a head writer, and instead, they got a series of articles from writers from other teams. HF has been wrong plenty of times.

First off, Hockey’s Future is far from a venerated oracle.
Second, this prospect ranking was based on a season where Kadri missed a significant portion of the year with a broken jaw.
Third, I don’t know if you’re aware of this but just because he’s ranked 42 doesn’t mean he’ll always be there. Players develop, injuries happen, motivation is gained or lost, there are tonnes of things that can happen.

It’s a fine sign post but the fact that neither Stalberg or Bozak is included is just highlights that the rankings were done a long time ago.

Hello, my name is Vesa and I’m a Toskaholic. But, thanks to the support of this group, it has now been five months since I’ve touched a puck.

I’m pretty sure he’s not real. I feel like pucks would sometimes be stopped from entering the net if there were actually someone standing in it.

Even though all seven goals got past Leafs No. 1 goalie Vesa Toskala, he can hardly be blamed for the lack of defence that was played in front of him. Wilson indicated that he felt a little sorry for the Finn and announced that Toskala would be starting the season opener — “so there’s no controversy.”
“I think both teams were disinterested most of the night,” said Wilson. “It’s your last exhibition game. Lord knows, we’ve played enough of them.”

In an alternate universe where the Monster played the whole game:

Even though not a single goal got past Leafs No. 2 goalie Jonas Gustavsson, he can not take credit for the spirited, motivated defence that was played in front of him. Wilson indicated that he felt a very sorry for the Swede and announced that Toskala would be starting the season opener with a very short leash — "so there’s no controversy."

"I think one of the two teams was disinterested most of the night," said Wilson. "It’s Buffalo’s last exhibition game. Lord knows, we’ve played enough of them, and it hasn’t stopped us from posting a 7 and 2 record and the highest goals for."
