Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

TSN.ca has been previewing one NHL team daily over the 30 days before the season starts. They are releasing their previews in reverse order of Scott Cullen's predicted ranking. They started earlier in the week with Phoenix (worst ranking), Colorado, NYIslanders, Tampa Bay and Atlanta. Today's preview was for the Leafs, meaning Cullen has them ranked 25th out of 30 teams. What do you all think. Is he being realistic? Underestimating the Blue & White? Being generous?

definet under estimation, there is no way the Leafs are worse on paper than they were last year. for them to finnish two spots down the standings from last year, every signing would have to be a bust and the offense would have to regress to near dead last

Cullen always says he uses complex equations to come up with his rankings. The rankings thus far are probably heavily weighted on last year’s aspects, where people like Toskala, Kaberle etc didn’t have real good years. We all expect bounceback years from them, plus a better overall defensive unit, and if/when that happens the rankings will reflect that.

So Cullen probably isn’t starting his ranks based on prediction, but simply on the players on the rosters based on last years stats (though he might estimate production for rookies). I wouldn’t read too much into this.

Ditto

I personally think we will finish around 10th in the east this year…

I don’t use complicated equations… just my gut feeling.

Agreed.

8th – 10th isn’t unreasonable. Furthermore, throughout last season, their so-called “power rankings” had us at 28th or 29th, which was totally bogus. Yeah, we were a bad team, but we never came close to finishing last.

Sens were posted today, and are therefore ranked one slot ahead of the Leafs.
