Leafs at Lightning
Puck Drop: 7PM TSN
The Leafs play game three of their five game "Empty Arena Tour 2010" having gone 1-1 against Atlanta and Nashville. Oddly enough they lost to Atlanta and beat Nashville which if any of you thought would happen ahead of time you've been smoking crack or hanging out with Nostradamus.
Antero Niittymaki starts against our new bonafide geniune starter Jonas Gustavsson. PPP didn't learn my lesson about making fun of bad goalies when he confidently stated that the Leafs would have no trouble handling Ondrej Pavelec. Niittymaki's had two bad games in his past three but anything can happen when you mix streaky goalies and bad forwards.
John Mitchell and Rickard Wallin are riding pine tonight as the Leafs welcome Wayne Primeau back into the lineup. Tampa Bay will be healthy scratching Victor Hedman. Free from the burden of hoping we'll make the playoffs hopefully this Leafs team can start their standard "too late to change anything" end of season roll and win a few games just for the hell of it.
Don't forget your SPG picks and go Leafs go.

Since the lockout, the Leafs go on a massive run every March to get back into the playoff race but not quite and it just ends up ruining our draft choice.
This year, because we don’t have our draft choice, we would actually root for this massive run because it would give Boston a lesser draft pick.
Does the fact that the optics have changed mean that the Leafs will screw this up because the big winning streak is in the teams’ best interest, or are we about to experience the first glimpse of a Leafs team going on a run when they aboslutely have to?

Mitchell shouldn’t be just in the press box, he should be dumped. He hasn’t done athing this year. I don’t even think he has been as good as Wallin. And Wallin has been a bucket of crap.

He’s been in over his head. He can live on the fourth line which he showed last year and he’s making under $500K. You need players like that to succeed under the cap.

He was arguably the team’s worst forward defensively judging by his numbers and what I saw on the ice last year. The difference was that we thought he’d grow out of it and he was contributing at the other end of the rink.
This year he’s kept up his acumen for always staring stupidly at the back of the man he’s supposed to be covering while the puck goes in the net, but he’s really been doing little on the forecheck either.
he did have that goal where he was standing in front of the goalie with his stick in the air, and Kessel banked the puck in off the stick

It’s sad because I want to like Mitchell. Southern Ontario boy, watched him on the Marlies. Hell in a blog post before last season I called him to take the 4th line center spot on the team.
But he’s just been dreadful pre- and post- injury this season. And while I can see what Burke and Wilson like about the kid, he’s quickly falling into the trap of being not quite skilled enough to be a top 6 guy but not quite sharp enough defensively to be on the bottom 6. The kid needs a wake-up call pretty soon.
Agreed, I see him exactly that way as well. He had flashed last year of #2 centre potential, just hasn’t been anywhere near there this season.
Worth a packaged deal for a draft pick at the deadline perhaps?

definitely
Leafs should wash their hands of any and every player who’s struggling this year. He’s got a season under his belt already. No more babying prospects Burke! If they can’t develop in their first 82 games, obviously they suck.

so
it’s ok to toss Mitchell overboard, but not Tlusty or Stralman?
Mitchell doesn’t need a wake up call, he doesn’t need to be dumped in the minors for eternity or anything else. He needs time to develop. He’s shown flashes of NHL level skill and is only 24. He was a 5th round pick who’s done more with his NHL level opportunities than either of Tlusty or Stralman. Sure, Tlusty and Stralman probably got screwed thanks to Maurice, but that’s not the point. Mitchell could still be a useful player. Lots of guys have poor showings in their second season. It’s called the sophomore slump for a reason…
I have nothing interesting to say.
by blurr1974 on Jan 21, 2010 5:43 PM EST up reply actions
Well, everyone’s available this year to be moved almost, so if he has some trade equity…
I dunno, he’s in the good graces of Coach W, so that’ll keep him around for a while still. I just see him at or near the bottom of the team’s prospects list right now, relative to the other guys that have had tea so far. Only time will tell though.
Grabo's virtual linemate.
by Sergei Puckizin on Jan 21, 2010 5:42 PM EST up reply actions
the Leafs just aren’t deep enough, and as far as everyone being available, I completely agree.
I just don’t like seeing players get dumped on at their first sign of troubles. This is why Toronto is considered a tough market to play in, let alone develop in. I’m not saying Mitchell is good right now, or that he’ll ever be, but I don’t think a season and a half of hockey is much of a development.
I have nothing interesting to say.
by blurr1974 on Jan 21, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions
I think we’ve already done more than enough dumping of low cost, early 20s players who are incomplete but still have a decent ceiling. He’ll kick around with the team and if he comes along great, if not then it’s a struggling player for struggling player trade (ala Latendresse for Pouliot, except not likely to be as successful) or the slow fade into obsolescence.
He is, in theory, a power forward and that style will take years to develop.
I’m all for that, as long as they don’t try him with Phillip again!
Let’s see if he can be a competent checker for a while first.

I actually find Burke/Wilson’s idea that a player destined for an offensive role must be on the top 2 lines a little suspect. Lots of decent players started their careers as checkers before their full talents blossomed. Johan Franzen was playing on Detroit’s fourth line in 2006.
Doesn’t everyone in Detroit start on the 4th line pretty much?

trade idea:
should burke go after cody hodgson from VAN?
he had some kind of back problems in the summer, and hasnt really rebounded this year, so his value might have slipped from TOP PROSPECT to INJURY BUST.
if so, he might be available for someone like Poni or Stajan at the deadline.
Sure its a risk, but he could become a franchise type of centre and he’s never going to have a lower value than he does presently. compared to cory schneider who has had no negative impact to his value all year and would still cost a pretty penny for any GM to pry him away from the moose.
Yes we’ll offer Vancouver our draft picks wait unnecessary prospectsmaybe our good players that would help Vancouver can we just buy Hodgson?

if his back thing was a one-time injury as opposed to a life-long kind of defect, then his potential dramatically changes.
im not saying its not risky, but look at patrice bergeron. great promise, devastating concussion, slow/unsure recovery, seems to be back at an elite level.

Canucks and Moose doctors both cleared him, but his personal physician didn’t.
Can’t see why the Canucks would want to ruin a highly rated prospect over a botched diagnosis, but stranger things have happened. I just think the whole thing reflects poorly on his attitude and commitment, which at his age and level, is all he’s got to bank on.

It’s a tough call, I mean you do see team doctors getting diagnoses wrong to err on the side of getting a player back in the lineup. Though I wouldn’t think they’d do that with a prospect they would have almost certainly returned to junior anyways.

anyway
my whole reasoning is that there arent a lot of great free agents coming up (brendan morrison might be the only realistic #1 option we can go with next year). or we overbid for guys like plekanec or take b-grade options like lombardi.
our most realistic option could be to go after players who are at low tide, or guys who could be squeezed out.
eg. horcoff is stuck in edm, but o’sullivan/gagner/cogliano/brule might represent future potential
eg. phx has turris/mueller/hanzal/tikhonov and eventually has to pare that down.
these might be the kinds of situations where you pry away a guy that has unknown value/potential, and hope it works out.
by Death_By_Leafs on Jan 21, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions
we have guys in the system with unknown potential – Bozak, Kadri. I wish we had more, but I don’t see why we’d bother with any of those guys this summer when we have some in the system who have higher ceilings.

edm – O’Sullivan and Brule have been converted to wingers (i ithink Brule has, for sure on O’Sullivan. Neither’s having all that good a year either…)
phx – Mueller has been converted to wing as well, and neither Mueller nor Tikhonov are even NHL ready yet. Makes no sense for Phx to move now when they’ve got nothing to replace with.
also, it’s likely a prospect like Hodgson will cost picks. Lots of them. Add to that, the prickly (to put it politely) relationship Burke and Nonis have with Gillis and I think the idea is dead in the water…

not these specifially
but moreso that teams with logjams of similar talent/position might flip one of them just to clear up the roster a bit.
we can’t steal rfas. we cant trade for established prospects/nhlers. there arent many top ufas who are going to make it to market. our scouting/draft potential in the next 2-3 yrs will produce unknown quantities.
ergo, we might need to take chances on some players without knowing exactly what they will yield, but hope like hell.
by Death_By_Leafs on Jan 21, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions
that would be nice, but the Canucks aren’t in desperate need to move Hodgson. Their price would be firm and would include picks.
For an idea like yours, Burke needs to focus on cap squeezed teams. Teams like the Flames, Blackhawks, Habs and Bruins might need some cap relief to get a full roster signed. But it could require the Leafs taking on bad contracts.
I have nothing interesting to say.

He is called ‘The Fraud’ here… naming him in any other way gives him more credit than what he is due.
Also, never reference ‘The Fraud’ in a trade rumour… he is only to be spoken in terms of contempt and mockery.

I would just say “no”. He produces similarly to Kessel at ES. We just need a working power play and we already have Kovalchuk for half the price.

would still not have the #1 centre to make them both click. and your cap situation would be blown out of the water to ever try and get one.
so would Kovy + (Antropov + Afinogenov) = Kovy + (Kessel)???
probably about as effective in terms of kessel’s improvement, but your team is still lacking the top centre.

Eklund He who must not be linked!
That said, getting Kovalchuk at the deadline makes no sense. I’m sure the price for him would include a 1st round pick (that the Leafs do not have apparently).
Wait for UFA if possible…or trade something random for his rights a week before July 1 to get him signed.
That’s if the Leafs are gonna get him of course. Should they? No idea. He’d get a king’s ransom…lol
Truculence...starting 10/1/09
Just in a meeting, tried to start the Kovalchuk for our 1st rumor, hope it makes its way to the right people, if it hits the media, it’s all me baby.

Yeah, cos the Leafs can shell anyone. A better question would be, “Do you want to see his chest bruised by all the pucks fired straight at it?”

PPP didn’t learn my lesson about making fun of bad goalies when he confidently stated that the Leafs would have no trouble handling Ondrej Pavelec.
At least he did learn the lesson about not predicting how many shots we’d need on the goalie to win the game, so that we can come one shot below that guess and lose by one.
