Maple Leafs 0 at Panthers 2: Post-Game Instant Reaction
I'm pretty sure that the Toronto Maple Leafs could spend the next five games firing pucks at Tomas Vokoun without piercing his forcefield. Local boy Kenndal McArdle threw a wrench into the regular scheme of things by potting his first career goal at home instead of in the ACC. Tyler Bozak learned a good lesson today: Don't cough up the puck in the neutral zone when everyone is flying down the ice towards your opponent's net.
Anyway, share your thoughts on the game and enjoy your Saturday night.
Update: I added some of the advanced statistics to the recap. Luke Schenn led all Leafs defencemen with 20:18 of even strength ice-time as he continues to show the form that made last year such a revelation. He also had the second best Corsi and Fenwick rating behind only Ian White. He spent most of his ice-time against Stephen Weiss, Cory Stillman, and Michael Frolik.

He's
such a sweet kid. Former Vancouver Giant. Hope it gets easier for him.
It's all hot bishes, naps, and dance parties
He has a likeable look about him. And I can’t even blame him for tonight.

hooray for florida getting the win. but i don’t think trap hockey and 1-0 or 2-1 or 2-0 snoozefests are going to win them many new fans. which they could actually use, judging by the empty seats tonight.
this leaf team puts a decent effort in most nights, but they just are not talented enough. that’s all there is to it really. they didn’t come out flying or anything tonight, but any time you get 39 shots – i don’t care how shitty they are – you can’t say the team wasn’t at least trying to get pucks on net. unfortunately points aren’t awared for trying.
but whatever. it will be june soon enough. 28 other teams and their fans will be right there with us, disappointed, wondering why the season ended the way it did, what they could have done differently, what moves will be made in the offseason to make them competitive. and we’ll all be back next year, hoping this is the year it actually gets better. fingers fucking crossed.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Wait’ll next year? Already?
Sigh, you’re right. It’s a matter of talent. I think it also might be a matter of net presence. Seems like the PP would work better with someone in front of the net. The problem with our top lines is that none of our guys are guys that do that: Kessel (shooter), Hagman (shooter), Bozak (passer), Stajan (???), Blake (hamster), Poni (here’s a guy who could do it).
Hey, here’s a good thing: Remember when Stajan, Blake and Poni was our FIRST line?
It’s easy to say all this on a night when we don’t score, though. Usually we do (even strength at least). What if we put one of each of the fourth line guys on each of the other lines?
Bozak, Kessel, Rosehill
Stajan, Blake, Orr
Mitchell/Grabbo, Hagman, Poni
Primeau, Stempniak, Kulemin (since that line seems to work ok)
I’m at a loss, really. That’s all I got. I guess once Poni and Stajan are gone, Stalberg and Hanson can slot in somewhere. Burke has a good point about teams trading for help down the stretch: why not make a deal now, if it’s there, so you can have the guy helping you sooner, if all you are giving up are draft picks?

The Worst Part...
I was at the game, and my friends actually commented that it was the most they had seen the place filled up yet.

Anyone collect autographed stuff?
My father-in-law won a stick last summer in a golf tournament autographed by Bryan Allen and he wants to sell it. There’s no certificate of authenticity, but is authentic. What would you pay for it and what do you think is a reasonable minimum price to ask for it on eBay? Thanks for any advice.

ebay has some bobby orr ones for $1500, and theres a manon rheaume one for $250 that isnt selling, so gauge from there…
probably in the $200-$400 range if your lucky. no certificate will mitigate this.
and the fact that its bryan allen.

Me and my buddy just played two online games as the Leafs. Won both games by a combined score of 8-0 and scored all goals by driving to the net.
Hmph…

My Leafs team won the Stanley Cup, but granted I traded almost everyone to do so.

Someone found a way to get 6 minutes of that game worth showing.
I struggled mightily to find 90 seconds.

I´m trying to figure out if this is the most depressing season for me as a Leaf-fan ever, or just one of the not-so-few semi-crapety ones.
But I think I go for this one as the #1.
I had so high hopes for Gusty to shine behind a solid defence and a coach that looked upon defence as the key to the game.
And so far I can´t say it has worked out that well…… sob
" Support Your Local Swedes ! "
this season has been particularly heartbreaking for sure. it wasn’t so much that they were supposed to be a good team, but they were supposed to at least show improvement. this is just painful now. and i’ve got 3 more games that i’ve bought tickets for, damn it. just have to get shitfaced and hope for an entertaining game i guess.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Went to the game – here’s what I noticed:
- Every single shot seemed to hit Vokoun in the chest. Part of it is just good positioning on his part, but most of it is that we don’t really challenge goalies. I think any goalie last night would have looked like a Vezina winner.
- We do absolutely nothing to rattle opposing players crowding the net on our PK. There were too many instances where there were two Panthers parked in front of Gustavsson, and not a single Leaf was giving them the time of day.
- Schenn looked good for the most part. He was finishing hits, playing decent defence, and looking like a top four defenceman.
Prefers pugnacity to truculence.
Sadness
This team is soul crushing to watch

Yay for lingering positive thoughts!
I added some of the advanced statistics to the recap.
And he was an even on the night. So, I’d say he had a good night, despite the terrible outcome for the Leafs.
