Jamal Mayers agent, Pat Brisson has been given permission to speak to other teams in hopes of encouraging a trade.
Via Darren Dreger on Twitter. He cost us a 3rd going out so that's the benchmark for the return. Of course, that doesn't include the playing time he stole from the Leafs.

It’s too bad the draft no longer has 10 rounds.

I would be shocked if the Leafs actually get anything of value for Mayers.

Pfft..
A sixth? To get that much, we’d probably need to take in Redden, Drury, AND Roszival from New York. Burke’s cap absorbation system to the test.
we got a conditional 6th for Pogge…

I would be shocked if there was a team that was remotely interested.

Well goll-ee
I sure hope Burke gives Wallin’s agent “Permission” to talk to other teams about “trading him” too.
I’m sure we could package them both for a pair of tickets to a playoff game (Between 2 other teams, obviously)

Recouping a third is a pipe dream. If there’s even a sniff of a chance of any return at all, take it.
The only way I can see him factoring into a trade is if he plays the deadline role Richard Petiot did last year.

Which I would be delighted with, I should add.

I hate this guy with the fiery intensity of a million suns
We wont get a bag of pucks for him.
We wont get a single puck for him.
We’d be lucky for a road hockey ball.
"In hopes of encouraging a trade"
This sounds to me like Burke has almost given up on the idea of actually conning someone into taking Mayers, and so he turns to Brisson and says: “Your guy isn’t going to get much playing time around here. You might want to consider finding your own way out of town.”
You show me a fox that's learned to deal with the Leafs' recent play, and I'll show you a dead fox.
Hopefully it just means that Burke doesn’t want to waste his time because he is so busy with all of the other awesome trades he is going to make.

A word beginning with “optimi” begins to come to mind as I read that and then how much the Leafs are sucking right now blocks out any hope that I can remember how that word finishes.

Yes please.

Maybe we can insert him into the very fine print at the bottom and sneak him into the deal.
Mayers: Hey guys, I’m here!
Other team: Uhhhh, who are you?
Mayers: I’m the guy you traded for, in the package deal.
Other team: Package deal? WTF! (Read fine print with a magnifying glass). Ohhhh fuck! (Summon horse doctor. Sound of gun being loaded is heard.)

Hey, Jamal’s a good guy. That said, maybe St. Louis will take him back?

It can still have “Toronto”. It just needs “Marlies” or “Men’s Hockey League” attached to it.

What is it with agents getting permission to seek out trades? I know it’s pretty common in sports the past few years, but I’ve never understood it.
Is the agent just going to call around to try to find a team that even wants the guy? Does the agent actually negotiate a deal (why would he care what the Leafs get back)? Is Brian Burke really too busy to send out a league-wide fax or e-mail saying this guy is available?

HNiC did a piece of the increasing influence of agents a while ago.
But Brisson, as an agent, has more leverage than a GM. He could suggest trading for Mayers could help in negotiating a new contract with Player X.
Not that it happens but that’s where I see the agent being able to be more fruitful than a GM.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
So in other words, the only way for deals to get done anymore is through collusion. Awesome.

Agent collusion not team collusion.

I’m guessing the agent can speak on behalf of the player better then the GM can regarding on-ice and off-ice responsibilities, i.e. he loves to take the initiaitive for community/charity projects, he doesn’t mind being a “role-player” with limited ice-time, he wants to mentor or council new players and rookies, he doesn’t mind running the drills in practice and will lead the optional skates with an eye on coaching or player development possibly within the same orginization after retirement, he isn’t looking for a big contract… blah blah blah
I think Jamal Mayers would like GMs to know that he’s willing to do a lot more for them then just skate around and look stupid, but it’s not really Burke’s place to say how exactly so it’s up to the agent.

I think Burke should just waive Mayers. Isn’t that the type of "favour"Burke usually provides guys that think they have a shot elsewhere in the NHL?
Can’t imagine anyone would claim Mayers though. Might be a bit of a bruise to Jamal’s ego and require a bit of an explanation as to why he was so recently worth a 3rd round pick.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
here’s a shot in the dark – maybe Burke’s been trying to move him on his own, can’t get any bites, told his agent “look, we might waive him” and so the agent said well, let me try.
Could that happen?

I think that is something Burke would do only once all avenues for trading Mayers have been exhausted. Isn’t that how he explained his decision to waive Bryzgalov in Anaheim?
leaf fan stuck in ottawa, a localized black hole that will suck everything in that area to oblivion.
Bryz was waived to make room for Hillier.
Did a quick google news search and Burke claimed teams wouldn’t make a trade for the G because of Bryzgalov’s salary ($1M) and his status as a pending UFA.
Mirtle has a good recap here.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Thanks
Seems strange to think that a relatively low salary/cap hit and being a pending UFA at the time would hinder Bryz’s trade-ability, but it did say at the time teams weren’t looking for goaltending at that time so I guess that helps explain it too.
