Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

They want to play and are disappointed in their ice-time. I've never ever heard a player say that before have you? This happens all the time.

Just play better as simple as that and your numbers show if you play well or not. Nobody's entitled to ice-time. Unfortunately a lot of players today actually believe they're entitled no matter how they're performance is to just automatically play without accountability or responsibility.

I wish everybody was out here bitching and complaining but then they went on the ice and backed it up with performance.

Ron Wilson unloading on two supposed veteran leaders on the team and their ridiculous stance. The emphasis at the end is mine.

Now’s not really a great time to be discouraging players from wanting out.

Please shut up until mid-March.

How do you figure? Aside from the “it would be great if all our shitty players disappeared” argument (which has more merit than it might ordinarily, given the absolutely craptastic performance of the whole team over the last ten games or so), how does XLB and Mayers’ situation make it better for us?

I’m not stoopid enough to think Burkie’s going to get much of anything for either Mayers or XLB (unless Bob Gainey is active at the deadline) but public announcements that players want to leave compromise BB’s ability to get fair value in the deal. Mayers and XLB going public like that are like the Heatly/Senators thing but on a much, much, much smaller and shittier scale. The effect won’t likely be much, but Burkie’s already sitting with a pair of fours at the poker table and everybody knows it. I am not in favour of anything that makes it harder for him to get something in return for those bums.

my views on loyalty

are complex. I mean, you don’t abandon — that’s bullshit bandwagoning.

but you don’t encourage unacceptable performances with your money or your cheers. The most sensible option for me lately has been to try not to watch too much, check in here when i have to and shake my head at the result. And parse through looking for reasons for optimism.

Ultimately, fans are fucked. It’s a completely illogical thing to do. But you persevere on the belief that one day it will all be worth it. To paraphrase Bill Simmons (who’s turned into a bit of a douche since his sports town turned into everything he used to hate) all I really want is to win one cup, to get the monkey off my back, so i can be treated like any other fan. Not be the subject of such pettiness, pity, jealousy and scorn.

interesting comments from Burke and Mayers:
"I can play a specific role and it is no secret that teams look for certain things like more depth for a playoff run," Mayers said. "I have not had a chance to win yet so I would certainly like to have that."

Burke wasn’t thrilled that Mayers’ request became public.

"We would prefer to handle situations like this internally," Burke said. "The agent asked for a trade and I have no idea why the agent leaked this. We’ve let teams know he is available."

I have nothing interesting to say.

Do you think it ever occured to them

that the reason they’ve never had a chance to win is because they are part of the problem rather than the solution?

Maybe if they were better they would win more. Rather than looking for good teams to be a passenger on, they could perhaps do everyone a favour and shut up about how they think they can do more to help the team. You’re “Defensive” players on the worst defensive team in the NHL. You’re Penalty Killers on one of the worst PK’s in history. If you think there’s a reason for it beyond your shitty play, you don’t seem capable of articulating that… in fact they seem to think they want MORE ice time, despite their atrocious numbers.

It really makes no sense on any level for them to think they have trade value… these guys are becoming the NHL equivalent of the LA Clippers.

At first I thought “wow. great idea.”

But lately it seems like the coaches who have done well in the NHL are a new-school of coach that typically has been brought out of the AHL. I’m thinking Bylsma and Budreau. Obviously those teams have some skill not present on our team, but they seem to get through to the players. The Pens went something ridiculous like 1000 wins and 2 losses under Bylsma at the end of last year and beginning of this year….

I'm not sure it's always as simple as that

Boudreau and Blysma had incredibly talented teams.

But Hitchcock has shown to be able to install good defensive systems. You know, what Wilson was supposedly brought here to do. He turned Nash into a complete player. And he took a not very good team last year into the playoffs (of course it helped he had a great goalie…..Gustavsson?) I think there would be a ton of interest if Hitchcock was available, and he has something RW doesn’t, a cup ring.

He reported that Wilson would probably be let go in favor of a head coach that was “less acerbic”."

by Hawerchuk on Jan 28, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

i could care less if RW is a nice guy

he’s trying to squeeze water from a rock in this situation, and hasn’t had much opportunity to show anybody what kind of a coach he can be in toronto.
right now hes a “coach a crappy nearly last-place team for a couple of futile seasons then get fired” kind of coach. but thats as good as you could say about anyone in the same situation.

i like how he doesnt play a trap, which is what a lot of coaches revert to when they have no talent (i.e. florida).
im not a stempniak fan, but he’s seemed to find a way for him to be utilized in a few different situations.
he recognized the budding talents of ian white and let him take the reins and run with it.
he saw the emerging creativity of kulemin and has given him a chance to shine
last year, he saw the spark that grabbo & hagman had and that was a fruitful combo when healthy.

so there are definitely areas where we’ve seen a little glimmer of what RW can do. id like to see what comes out of a team with more talent.

if these players dont want to hear the hard news that they suck, then too bad. you’re professionals, please act like it.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Jan 28, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I would also like to point out

that neither Michalek or Carle are still with the Sharks… they’ve both since been dealt (Carle’s moved twice since then actually)… so it’s not like the Sharks were desperate to hang on to them either.

Wilson is demanding, and as far as I can tell that isn’t working much with the pack of retreads we’re throwing on the ice with regularity. The guys that respond to it, who step up their intensity, seem to be thriving to some extent. I don’t know if that method will work for some of the guys that have to work their asses off just to be brutally mediocre. It’s not like Exelby or Mayers would ever be All-Star material if they could just figure it out. They have always sucked, and probably always will. They’re both NHL players, but they’ve both played on bad teams their entire careers – for a reason. The idea that Wilson would suddenly convert them to winners is laughable.

Exelby has been coached by the following coaches: Brad McCrimmon, Bob Hartley, Don Waddell, John Anderson, and Ron Wilson… two of those guys have made it to the Stanley Cup finals as head coach, one of them did so as a player (McCrimmon)… and Anderson has won a Calder Cup in the AHL. The idea that it’s the coaches that are making him bad and not playing him enough is ridiculous.

Mayers has been coached by the following guys: Mike Keenan, Greg Gilbert, Joel Quennville, Mike Kitchen, Andy Murray, and Ron Wilson. Again… two of them have made the Finals as a coach, one as a player, and again I wouldn’t hold any of them responsible for his poor play.

This whole lack of ice time thing in the case of pluggers who are NEVER going to be 1st line material is a joke.
