Is Watching the Leafs "Masochism with Commercials"?
No, it's masochism with commercials and Pierre McGuire, which is to say it's masochism with commercials and more masochism. Bill Simmons (I know) identifies the Leafs as #7 on a list of sports teams eligible to inflict a "Level 1" (epic) loss upon their fanbase. I think he underestimates the significance of '93 and misses the point that injury was added to indignity for us when the Habs took that Cup. In these trying times, with guys like DGB "taking a break" from the team, it's a particularly apposite reflection on why we put ourselves through this misery.

You’re probably right that Simmons underestimates how devastating a blow 1993 was and still is to all Leaf fans, but having said that it’s hard to find fault with the other six teams and fanbases he ranked “ahead” of us.
leaf fan stuck in ottawa, a localized black hole that will suck everything in that area to oblivion.
For sure we beat out the Giants. Earthquake? Barry Bonds? C’mon!

#7 = way too low
I pointed out that none of the teams above us have an entire country of assholes absolutely loving it when we lose. When BOS made it in 2004 they were the sentimental choice = does anyone think that’ll happen if we make the Finals?
That was my initial impression too.

Hockey in Canada has ALWAYS been TOR v. Every other asshole.

Every team above the Leafs, especially the Cubs, suffered sports tragedies that have been glorified and in large part, pitied and sympathized. The Leafs errors are more blunders, acts of idiocy that will never have the chance to be romanticized no matter how many years were to pass.
