This is your post-game instant reaction thread. Use this to kvetch and talk each other off of your respective ledges.

Wilson relayed same sentiments of the thread. Bad penalties that shouldn’t have been called, but ultimately, the Leafs team sucks. Too many giveaways, too passive, too slow. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

I couldn’t believe some of the calls on us…

More than emotional. I remember Roenick’s goal and I didn’t feel worse than this. It’s just unreal…it’s like 100 level one losses (bill simmons) combined into one.

I hear you. Roenick’s goal was awful for me because I hated him so much; at least Rooney plays for England when he’s not injured. But tonight was the first time I’ve ever watched the end of a hockey game in complete silence.

Sheppard, a player the Leafs could trade for, yes?

Josh Harding, another favourite, is on the left with my boy James Sheppard on the far right. Both with excellent suits, and Sheppard already with the wherewithal to go with a jacket with very faint stripes.

…final evidence that James Sheppard simply gets it. This photo was taken close to his rookie season a few years ago. A rookie who understood the pink on pink combination with an active tie. Unconscionable. There’s more to Sheppard than meets the eye. For him to succeed, a team has to give him the proper opportunity. See what I mean about the potential? He’s aching to showcase the talent.

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

by bkblades on Jan 30, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, sir

Stifled by the previous coaching regime and playing in the NHL before he was fully ready, Sheppard has struggled to find his place on the Minnesota Wild. Often toiling on the third or fourth line, the untapped offensive potential is most intriguing. He’s still only 21 years old, three years removed from his regrettably final season in junior where he scored 96 points and added 20 more in the playoffs. Most importantly, he could be that ever elusive power forward with excellent fashion sense. That kind of talent should be fully exposed to the masses. Plus, Sheppard’s from Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of my most favourite cities in the world.

Raycroft could’ve taken one of his naps in goal tonight and it’s possible the Leafs still wouldn’t have scored.

by Slava Duris #24 on Jan 30, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

That’s what is worse for me.

It’s not just the losing that hurts, it’s the fact that without some boneheaded defensive mistakes we could have won that game.

We aren’t getting buttfucked 24/7 in a lot of games, we play really well in parts but then just throw it away.

by Mikeman_66 on Jan 30, 2010 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

It just makes it that more frustrating. They barely hit double digits in shots on Raycroft. All year long they fire from everywhere on the ice except tonight.

I wasn’t sure the makeup of that line didn’t have it coming though. Never mind that both Primeau and especially Kulie was tackled in front, Mayers struggled all year on the defensive end.

The Leafs were outchanced 17-11 in total by some team from out west. In periods two and three, they were outchanced 11-6. Hagman had one great chance a few minutes into the 3rd period that missed the net, otherwise the Leafs chances were about as borderline as could be.

Well it’s half 3 in the morning so i’m off now.

But on a ending note. I know some might scream at me for getting emo here a little bit but this was another bad loss in a long line of bad losses this season and Wilson and Burke have to do something drastic soon, if for nothing more than to just to give the players and the fanbase a chance to draw a line under what has been a horrible season so far.

by Mikeman_66 on Jan 30, 2010 10:44 PM EST reply actions

I think that if you’re looking for drastic that you’ll hopefully see step one March 3rd and step 2 on July 1st when they don’t re-sign a bunch of players.

I know I said I was gone but I'm back to chime in.

At the risk of also sounding emo…this is the most depressing Leafs season I can remember watching, by far.

I know the eventual winning seasons will be that much sweeter, but this season is the worst Leafs season I have ever seen.

And no amount of Bear photos will make it any better.

I’d love to know by what measure March 3 is a success for the Leafs and Burke.

I’m having a really tough time figuring out the market. So many teams are up against the cap and draft-picks and prospects, with their low salary cost certainty, have never been worth more.

I have a bad feeling the evening of March 3rd will have a lot of Leaf fans shaking their heads, hope I’m wrong.

I have a bad feeling the evening of March 3rd will have a lot of Leaf fans shaking their heads, hope I’m wrong.

I think that it will be, like last year, a function of overblown expectations.

Here’s what I think is going to happen:

  1. Tomas Kaberle will NOT be traded
  2. the highest pick that will come to the Leafs will be a 2nd rounder.

As for how to classify it as a succes? I think if he can replicate what Cliff Fletcher did two years ago and he did last year [turn pending UFAs that won’t be re-signed into picks] then I think that’ll have to be seen as a success because I don’t see how he’ll be able to do much more.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Jan 30, 2010 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

to me those two things are almost certainties.

that being said, Burke isn’t a trade deadline guy…so these expectations may need to be tempered even further.

I think the problem is what MF37 noted: everything he’s looking for is much more valuable now.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Jan 30, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

And everything we have to trade seems to be decreasing in value.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Jan 30, 2010 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

I think it really is dependent on Kovalchuck. I rather doubt he gets traded, but if he does, I think it would be easier for the Leafs to move more bodies. If not, and I would be surprised if Kovy does leave Atlanta, Toronto won’t be getting much if anything for their very few trade assets.

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

by bkblades on Jan 30, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

You think Kovalev will set the market? If he moves, other teams will react accordingly?

My concern is the playoff picture will be muddy and GMs will be hesitant to swing a big trade.

Right. I’m under the mindset if a team is willing to pay for Kovy, then another team will inquire more seriously about other players. That doesn’t mean the Leafs will get more, but rather the interest will perk up. Something tells me that the Leafs aren’t getting any phone calls as is right now anyway.

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

by bkblades on Jan 30, 2010 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

PPP I think you’re right on all three counts: expectations, Kaberle and the peak is one 2nd round pick.

The point I keep coming back to/wrestling with is how does this organization get better? There are so few trades, rosters might as well be frozen from October to March. The cap is going to remain flat (if not decrease); UFAs are expensive/inefficient and there really isn’t much in the system.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Jan 30, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Draft day trades?

Hope a GM is willing to overpay for Kaberle then?

Other than that, draft well, hit some gems in the late rounds (which I think we’ll start doing even more now).

And wait for 2012 (the season, not the movie which I finally saw today and it was awful)

Even if the Leafs draft and hit some gems this summer, none of them will be cracking the Leaf line up until 2012 and none of them should see the line-up until 2013 or ’14.

There’s an amount of perfection that the Leafs will need to match, which I can’t fathom seeing. However, the Leafs have to scour the NCAA and SEL/KHL in my mind more than ever. They’re more advanced prospects, even if the ceiling isn’t as high and MLSE has the financial wherewithal to take advantage. Trading and UFA is an exhausted system, so that’s the only method I can the Leafs taking advantage over other teams.

I kid.

I agree. I think the Leafs have to trawl NCAA and Europe. They should also roll the dice on cheap, veteran UFA contracts. I was really hoping the Leafs would go after Malhotra (although Eyebleaf was the big proponent on that one) and it turned out to be a golden signing by San Jose.

About 75% of that list is either retiring or not effective enough to contribute. That’s the danger with signing very old players to one year deals. A team still has to correctly assume they will continue to be assets. Sometimes I still can’t believe the tremendous amount of luck that is involved with sports management.

For sure

The Leafs really need to borrow a page from the Blue Jays (yikes) and sign young-ish vet players to incentive laden contracts/minor league/training camp contracts at one year deals and see what they got. I just don’t see any other way for the Leafs to acquire the necessary depth from underneath to feed the big club.

Hmmm

That makes me feel both good and bad.

The truth is that the Leafs are going to be depending on luck and considering how things have gone this year that’s a scary thought.

One of Bozak, Hanson, Stalberg is going to have to develop perfectly while the other two become NHLers. After that…they need to pump as much as they can into player development and scouting. They’re going to need a lot of their recent picks to pan out to give them at least a source of cheap bottom of the roster players.

Also, find a Tomas Vokoun. That would help.

Agreed that the Leafs have the odds stacked against them. They need a way deeper prospect pool to spread the risk.

Goaltending is huge. You get certainty between the pipes and a whole pile of problems will disappear.

The other enormous variable in sorting out the furture of this club is the labour situation, the current CBA expires in 2011.

As of right now, I don’t have that much confidence with those picks. Essentially, they’re replacing their past first round picks, rather than supplementing them. Even Eberle I have my doubts as to what kind of player he’s going to be in the NHL.
