Giguere got a phone call in Tampa this morning. He was in uniform but did not take the ice. Was seen hugging players and coaches. (per M37)
In case others haven’t seen it, Orange County Register is reporting Giguere+ to Toronto for Toskala +
The Ducks are set to trade Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the franchise’s all-time winningest goalie, to the Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s expected they will receive goalie Vesa Toskala and another player in return, the Orange County Register has learned.
Giguere received a telephone call when he reached the Tampa Bay Lightning’s practice facility, where he learned of the potential move. The 32-year-old was in uniform but did not take the ice as players and coaches hugged him before he took the team bus back to the hotel.
Sources close to the team said Giguere needed to waive his no-trade clause as he headed back to pack his belongings, but that he was prepared to do so as he’ll be reunited with former Ducks general manager Brian Burke and longtime goalie coach Francois Allaire.
Giguere had lost his starting job to Jonas Hiller, who signed a four-year, $18-million contract extension Saturday, and Ducks GM Bob Murray had stepped up his efforts to trade the veteran to rid the club of his $7-million salary for next season. Toskala is making $4 million this season but is in the final year of his contract.
Giguere is the sole remaining player from the 2003 team that reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, where he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the postseason. But the easygoing goalie topped that by backstopping the Ducks to their first Cup victory in 2007 when they defeated the Ottawa Senators.

I am not sure if I love this trade. Phaneuf = overrated? Hagman = great player great contract, same with White. what’s Phaneuf’s cap hit?

Sorry, I’m actually quite happy with this deal, but Phaneuf isn’t the elite d-man he’s being made out to be.
I also think his cap hit is WAY out of line for what he contributes.

i think i worded that wrong.
i’d agree his cap hit is higher than it should be, but this isn’t a McCabe situation right? Phaneuf still has potential, and could end up earning the money. I think if the Flames weren’t in such a pickle cap wise, Phaneuf would still be there. He’s young, skilled and is a pretty good skater.

Take Mike Green
And shift his offense and Defense about 2 million towards the center and you have Phaneuf. Hes got good O but your not gonna be running him out there on your first line, he still does some stupid stuff.
Many have charged that Phaneuf has stalled, if not regressed.

That’s a big cap hit and his play has been underwhelming of late. If he gets back on track it’s an awesome deal, if not….
One thing you’ve got to say about Burke is that he sure is willing to take chances. This move and the Kessel deal could both be home runs, or they could screw us for years to come.

not sure that he needs to be is all i’m saying. Kulemin is your 1st line LW, Poni is second, Sjostrom is 3rd. That leaves the 4th line. makes no sense given his skill set.

I would be VERY angry. Phaneuf is a great defenceman already and he is only 24. He will get better and more than likely they will lose Stajan and Hagman anyways.

On behalf of Gametime. Congrats on the new team, Pheneuf is slightly overrated/paid but hes alright. Im glad we didn’t have to punch him out yet. Your guys are gonna need offense though, the marlies sort of suck so your gonna need to pick up some pieces now.
Toskala’s a UFA, Blake’s cheaper than Giguere and can contribute for Anaheim.
There’s got to be more coming our way than just Giguere.
