Cool
Anything to keep the Leafs out of the bottom five. Let the Bruins pick Hall or Seguin with their own soon-to-be lottery pick.

PHANUEF AND GIGUERE BOTH LEAFS
MY BRAIN IS EXPLODING
For what?!?
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
deal was reported as Toskala+ for Giguere +
The Ducks are set to trade Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the franchise’s all-time winningest goalie, to the Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s expected they will receive goalie Vesa Toskala and another player in return, the Orange County Register has learned.
Giguere received a telephone call when he reached the Tampa Bay Lightning’s practice facility, where he learned of the potential move. The 32-year-old was in uniform but did not take the ice as players and coaches hugged him before he took the team bus back to the hotel.
Sources close to the team said Giguere needed to waive his no-trade clause as he headed back to pack his belongings, but that he was prepared to do so as he’ll be reunited with former Ducks general manager Brian Burke and longtime goalie coach Francois Allaire.
Giguere had lost his starting job to Jonas Hiller, who signed a four-year, $18-million contract extension Saturday, and Ducks GM Bob Murray had stepped up his efforts to trade the veteran to rid the club of his $7-million salary for next season. Toskala is making $4 million this season but is in the final year of his contract.
Giguere is the sole remaining player from the 2003 team that reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, where he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the postseason. But the easygoing goalie topped that by backstopping the Ducks to their first Cup victory in 2007 when they defeated the Ottawa Senators.
More details will come throughout the day.

Sorry Leafs fans
If Dion Phaneuf is traded to your team I will hate you guys with a fiery passion. Nothing personal, well accept against Phaneuf, I hate that fucker.

Maybe the Ducks will take Blake along with Toskala ;)
WOW!

i like this trade as described
a lot more than i like the the phaneuf deal. i mean if Burke has upgraded the goaltending AND gotten a 1st in exchange for only the two most hated players on this team? awesome.
But phaneuf? seriously, who the fuck is going to play forward and score goals on this team?
Am trying to wait until i see how all the pennies drop. We can discuss later
OK WTF
What a crazy sunday afternoon.
I’m kind of not sure what to make of all this.
Phaneuf = expensive upgrade on White.
Aulie = future shut down guy to pair with Schenn
Sjorstrom = upgrade on Mayers

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
as for Giguere
If we can ditch Blake and Toskala and still pick up a 1st, I think Burke is officially off the hook for the Kessel trade even if Kessel’s body spontaneously explodes into flame at centre ice next game.
Which won’t happen… but you know.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
my thoughts exactly
i don’t know what to make of the Phaneuf deal AT ALL but if Burke has turned the two most hated Leafs this year into a goaltending upgrade AND a 1st, he’s my hero.
at this point it just says
Giguere for Toskala

Leafs don't need to score goals right now
They suck at both ends of the ice, but they suck FAR more on the defensive side.
Upgrading the Defensive side is far more important than the offensive side at this point in time. The offense is the last piece of the puzzle if you’re building from the goalie out.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Um, maybe I’m misunderstanding you (the two of us seem to have that issue).
The Leafs now will suck way more on the offensive side. They just traded away over about 80 points, including 35+ goals and their leading goal scorer.
I don’t know that Phaneuf is an upgrade on the defensive side of the puck and he was being outscored by Ian White.
As for building from the net out, the net remains the Leafs biggest question mark and their big trade was to acquire Kessel.

Ok
I’m referring to the addition of Aulie as well in terms of the defensive upgrade, and I’m writing off this season. I think Phaneuf is an upgrade on White in terms of overall level of play. I would acknowledge his numbers are worse this season, but I think his pedigree is a bit better… and his career numbers are far superior.
As for the offense, I do acknowledge that improvement in that aspect will be necessary… but I think the D is more important overall… adding Giguere is a bigger piece to the D improvement also.

Gigurere is a nominal improvement. He’s been pretty brutal the past two years. Hillier has way better numbers behind the same defence.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
He's an improvement over Toskala though...
is he not?

A shooter-tutor would be an improvement over Toskala. But I don’t think it’s a significant upgrade in net. At $6M for one more season, it also curtails what the Leafs can do with their RFAs and on the UFA market.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
True
listen… I freely acknowledge that this is a lateral move in most respects.
I think the numbers coming back are hard to digest. Losing Blake, Mayers, Stajan, and Hagman opens forward spots up in the future. I would think they may keep Poni now… but maybe they deal him for picks… I dunno.
They have lots of spots up for grabs. They’re going to suck hard next year either way.

by Steve Burtch on Jan 31, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions
If I'm being brutally honest
I think Phaneuf runs around too much, and he isn’t great in his own end. He’s basically the 2nd coming of Bryan McCabe.
I don’t like losing White and Hagman… but I do like the addition of Aulie.
I’m not huge on Giguere, but ditching Blake is a big plus overall to the tenor of the room.
I think the openings up front will be filled short term with Stalberg, Hanson and Bozak longer term… and Burke probably planned it that way for most of the year.
next year there will be some interesting battles up front, but this team is taking another step back before it goes forwards.
Kaberle hopefully moves before the draft… he might be our 1st rounder eventually.

I think you’ve hit on an interesting point – in tearing down this team to make it better, they may be awful again next year.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
The one plus about Phaneuf
is he’s still only 24 so there’s room for him to improve defensively. The offense is harder to teach I think.
As for Aulie, I think he’ll be a Chris Phillips type… which I can get behind.
I like the Giguere deal only because he’s a better influence on a young goalie than Toskala. He did well mentoring Hiller and he can show Gustavsson how to work with Allaire in a positive manner.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

Agreed.
I’d also add that sometimes change for the sake of change is a good thing. I have no idea what goes on inside the room, but it seems to me this club really needed to be shaken up.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
sea change in the locker room
is a nice thing.
Adding a Conn Smythe and Cup winning goalie doesn’t hurt either. I think Giguere will he happier coming to TO and pretty much being handed the starters role. I still don’t like how he handled the loss of the role to Hiller in ANA, but he’s a passionate guy and he can steal a game or two. Much better example for Gustavsson than what he’s ahd.
I have nothing interesting to say.
by blurr1974 on Jan 31, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
but Phaneuf isn't a "defensive" upgrade
he’s a physical offensive dman. He does very little to help in the goals against department from everything i’ve seen on the stats side plus my own two eyes.
I think the physical side is part of it though.
The Leafs lacked Sand Paper on the back end with Exelby doing little since he had almost no time on the ice. Schenn wasn’t hitting enough, and Komisarek is injured a lot.
White was somehow our most physical blue liner with regularity… but he’s too small to do that in a meaningful way (to anyone other than Erik Cole).

Leaving Toronto: Blake, Hagman – combined 7 mill cap hit next year

No. One more year on that deal.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Actually, that’s a good thing – Giguere is at least competant. Which is more than I can say for Toskala. We take the assumption that Gustavsson is “the future” – and if he can improve his game, he certainly has the stuff. If he’s not, though, then having someone who may not be the second coming of Georges Vezina, but at least isn’t the (now third) coming of Andrew Raycroft will be very helpful for an extra year.

What a day. The only way it would be better is if they announced Sharp, Bufyglien and Versteeg for Finger, Exelby, Wallin and Mitchell
So to sum up the day.
We get rid of useless parts in Toskala, Blake, Mayers. Lose some pretty good assets in Hagman and White. And lose a nonfactor in Stajan as he was going to be gone come the offseason anyways.
In return we get Phaneuf (who I personally love) and Giggy (who could still be a number 1 goalie).
Sounds good to me.
And Keith Aulie who could be a good defenseman for us one day. And Sjostrom who from what I’ve heard is an alright 2 way forward.
I’m extremely happy right now.

So we got rid of two players that everyone thought we couldn't trade for a pack of pucks
as well as Mayers who noone gives a shit about, and Stajan whos expiring? A streaky player in Hagman that wasn’t a part of our future plans, and White as the only valuable piece? The way I see it is we only traded White for Phaneuf and Giguere since the other players were all players that I wanted to get rid of. I don’t care if we have no offense, these trades are hard to pass up, bring the prospects up and start the youth movement.
agree completely
this is a good day.
I can’t believe that both Toskala and Blake have gone!!! And Mayers to boot.
Isn’t a logjam on D what was happening at the beginning of the season? And therefore something that was trying to be remedied? This just gets more puzzling to me the more I think about it

"Schenn" in Chinese Medicine is HEART.
Schenn’s been thrown into a mess of a situation this year, but if you think this is going to effect this kid in the long run your mistaken. Look wgere the tutlage is coming from now! be excited, Schenn, Aulie, Gunnerson will evole at their own rate, ups and downs. Schenn will captain this team one day.

Craziness
Absolute craziness. I still can’t quite believe all this has gone down today.

I was talking to my buddy from Detroit…he was fairly excited about the chance of seeing his two least favorite players in the NHL go at it (Lucic and Phaneuf). Let’s be honest besides the fans of these players they are both fairly disliked around the league. Both have the tendancy to play reckless and not always answer the bell, but if they do drop them i’m sure many around the league would be excited for it…I know I am

You are from there right?
Those 3 upper canada wester teams are all from one city, what do you think of the sedins not getting run by phanuef anymore?
it will be nice not having to deal with him so often anymore, but now it might be a little harder for me to cheer for the leaf’s defense…..

Hagman and White, yes. But neither are stars. White is more like a folk hero than anything else.

White and Hagman
were the only two people leaving Toronto that anyone is sad to see go.
A significant minority of the ppl here were in Stajan’s corner, too, but i’m not one of them.
Hagman and White, yes. Everyone else we basically considered them to be anywhere from “meh” to “DON’T LET THE DOOR HIT YOUR ASS ON THE WAY OUT!”

Yes... and they got Gary Leeman
Does that mean we hope Ian White is this trade’s Gary Leeman?

All in all I think Burke did a pretty good job today. As much of a fan I am of the Bruins, i’m also a fan of hockey in general, and Toronto did some good things today. Your offense took a hit, but Burke said he’s not done, so I see some help comming. Your goal situation was upgraded, and the stellar defense just got better for now, and in the future with Aulie. I see Toronto playing a lot of close games for the rest of the year.

Last week in philly we heard rumors af phanuef and jokinen for carle and briere, but then we heard yhet didnt want jokinen and didn’t want to give up carle. So maybe we will see briere for Phanuef.
No to Briere.

Am I the only one who’s thinking:
Phaneuf = Rob Blake
Schenn = Adam Foote
in a year or two ?
Who wants to hear a funny ass joke?
dunno about the Blake comparable
but i’ve been seeing foote/schenn career similarities since he first took the ice.
If Luke Schenn turns into Adam Foote I am more than satisfied.
i'm ok with it
since those two helped the Avs win a cup…

A thought.
We essentially lost $2M for this year, and gained an additional two mil in salary for next year… Not sure I’m crazy about that.
Worth it, IMHO
to get rid of useless players like Toskala, Blake (ZOMG!), and Mayers.
by Marc Pilgrim on Jan 31, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions
Toskala was as good as gone anyway. Blake, although he was a bit of a waste of space for his cost, was going to cost us $2M less on the cap for next year. Mayers, no doubt, needed to go.
According to the Star, Mayers and Sjostrom were added at the very end. Burke credited Sutter with the idea.

You traded this year for next year
Most of the players you moved you either wanted gone or weren’t bringing back next year anyway. Giguere is a money sink but you don’t have any backups or leverage if monster walks.
True
But from what im hearing you gave up about 6 players for 2. What are their replacements going to cost?

Blake has 2 more years. We signed him for 5 and this season is only his third.

After Marleau and Kovalchuk, the market looks pretty thin for top level forwards. Chances are Burke makes some minor moves this off season, and does the big stuff (if needed) in 2011.

Phaneuf, Komisarek and Kessel are all signed through 2013-14. They are also the 1st, 3rd and 4th highest cap hit players on the roster currently, with Giguere being 2nd highest.

This is a very, very stark contrast
to the depressing mood that the GDTs have taken on lately.
Mr. Burke, you are awesome.
Everyone knows about Giggy, and Dion but Aulie should be a very good defenseman (Maybe our Tyler Myers gag*) and Sjostrom was a former 1st round pick who turned into a very good, reliable defensive player (pk specialist) who was part of a tandem who lead the nhl in PK percentage when he was with the Rangers and has some decent offensive upside (great in shootouts)
Sjostrom hada great nickname in NY, “Freddy Shoestrings”
I have nothing interesting to say.
