Toronto Maple Leafs trade Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala to Anaheim for Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Editor's Note: For more great discussion check in with the original fanshot here.

Brian Burke was not done when he swung a blockbuster for Dion Phaneuf. He proceded to trade Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala to Anaheim for Jean-Sebastien Giguere. I can only assume that his next move will be to turn water into wine. Picking up JS Giguere has been discussed from the moment that Burke took the Leafs' reins and the chatter became deafening once Jonas Hiller was signed to an extension. The Leafs win this trade hands down. We will never hear "it goes through Toskala" again or "Blake fires into [goalie's] chest".

The consensus among Leafs fans was that Vesa Toskala had about as much value as a broken hockey stick. A quick look at his basic stats confirms it

GPMINWLEGAGAGAASASVSV%SO
2009 - Vesa Toskala 26 1393 7 12 85 3.66 676 591 .874 1

The numbers on Blake are just as staggering. MF37 nailed it: Blake scored 40 goals the year before he signed in Toronto and 50 in 216 games as a Leaf.

GPGAP+/-PIMPPGSHGGWGGTGSOGPCT
2009 - Jason Blake 56 10 16 26 -4 26 2 0 2 0 170 5.9

The Ducks get a player that works very hard but is not a smart hockey player. He is incredibly predictable, doesn't pass, can't shoot, but he works his tail off.

GPMINWLEGAGAGAASASVSV%SO
2009 - Jean-Sebastien Giguere 20 1108 4 8 58 3.14 580 522 .900 1

Earl Sleek has an amazing post looking at his performance this year by period. The good news is that he is incredible in the first two periods. The bad news is that he is Toskala-esque over the third period and overtime. Cap-wise, Giguere is on the books next year for $6M but the next year Burke just took $4M off which is a hefty chunk of change. This makes two terrible goalies that Burke has unloaded on Anaheim creating a rather funny situation:

Imagine Hiller goes down for Anaheim. They will have Toskala and Pogge LOL

 - 6rick6

This takes away some cap flexibility next year as the Leafs will have almost $47M committed to just 14 players but not one of them is Jason Blake so that's reason enough to smile. Giguere is a massive upgrade on Vesa Toskala, has already spoken to Wilson about mentoring Jonas Gustavsson, and is seen by Burke as an incredible example for the young goaltender to folllow. This is partly about upgrading the goaltending but also about creating a perfect atmosphere for Gustavsson to reach his full potential.

Agreed

There is no goalie out there that we would be able to acquire that has as much playoff success as Giguere does. He’s won a Conn Smythe and a Stanley Cup; he knows what it takes to win. It also doesn’t matter if he’s not greatly better than Toskala, because this does shore up our goaltending for next season too; seeing as how Nabakov isn’t going anywhere, and I don’t really want Turco and that leaves Dan Ellis.

We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

Meh

He’s building from the net out – his defense is now set for the next few years, and his goaltending is set for at least next year. How he concentrates on the forwards going… forward.

Is it possible that Anaheim wanted Toskala?

Terrible as a starter but he was once upon a time a very capable backup goaltender. And if he sucks (very likely) he’s a nice expiring contract. Blake’s contract was certainly the one that Burke demanded be moved if Anaheim was acquiring VT’s expiring contract.

Honestly who cares. We got rid of him.

by L510 on Jan 31, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think longer term cap relief is the big reason Anaheim makes the deal.

Sure they take on a pro-rated $2M in salary this season (Blake+Toskala-Giguere) but free up $2M next season (Giguere-Blake).

I’m new at this. I had to join after this. Toskala is $3.5 million/year and according to save percentage I believe he is in the bottom 5 of all goalies to play in the NHL. What could whoever Anaheim’s GM is be thinking. I guess the same thing he was thinking when he signed Koivu.

JS Gigurere cap hits: 6M this season, 6M next season

V Toskala cap hits: 4M this season, 0M next season (he’s a UFA)

6M is a whole lot of money to pay a backup goalie for two years. This is about salary flexibility for Anaheim.

Blake’s cap hit shoudl be factored into that equation… don’t you think, considering he was part of the trade? It ends up being 1.5 mil if you put that in, and I think the upgrade is worth it, especially considering we DONT want a lottery pick.

When I heard

That we traded for Phaneuf I was “FUCK, we have too many D as it is.. unless Finger and/or Exelby are gone – I will be pissed!”

Then I realized we traded White (probably going to cost too much to re-sign – but I miss him already) and Hagman – I really liked him but he is very streaky.

That made me sad… then I saw the rest of the deal and went “oh, ok”

This is probably not a great trade for the Leafs if you look at it by itself, but if we can move another D or 2 for some forwards then it becomes very good.

Also, LOVE the Giggy Deal!!! 2 years of Blake for 1 year of Giggy, i can do – also, fuck toskala right in his stupid head.

I think that’s the key. Toronto by far has the highest amount salary tied up in the back-end of any team in the NHL. Arguable if the Leafs have that elite D yet, but they’re all paid very well, which limits the Leafs from adding more pieces to round out their depth for sure.

2 trades great not because of who they got - but who they go rid of.

To me these two trades are great not because of who the Leafs got, but who they got rid of.

Just looking at those two bums Toskala and Blake all year has been making me sick. Their incompetence spread like a virus throughout the entire team. Never in a billion years did I EVER thnk Burke could get rid of Blake or Toskala unless he ate their contracts and buried them on the Marlies. To get rid of both at the same time and not just dump them but actually trade them for something valuable is absolutely incredible.

To me, this was the better of the two trades but the Phaneuf trade is a winner as well.

Phaneuf epitomizes the Burke vision of truculence. He is the new face of what the Leafs aspire to be and he sets the benchmark. The added benefit of finally getting rid of the last vestiges of the old loser Leafs regime is a bonus. Stajan: nice guy, swell fella, see ya! Hagman? Who cares, an FA like that is readily available at any time.

For better or for worse, this is Burke’s team now. Lets win a couple of games now.

Kaberle is next, he is the only valuable, expendable commodity – more expendable now with Phaneuf on the team. Great player, great Leafs history but sorry, the Leafs are 3-4 years out from making a run in the playoffs, by then Kaberle is 35,36 years old. Trade him NOW for draft picks or young prospects. Who cares if they can contribute now, by the time they come into their own, the Leafs will be contending again.

for what its worth Stajan is, yes very nice.

But he will never be a second line centre on an stanley cup winning team. He is filler. The reason he’s got the points he has is because of his minutes. Bozak could come close to his numbers no problem if he had Stajan’s games played and minutes. I will not miss stajan even when I see him being nice in Calgary

Phaneuf epitomizes the Burke vision of truculence. He is the new face of what the Leafs aspire to be and he sets the benchmark.

I don’t know how regularly you watch Phaneuf, but his defensive liabilities on the ice were very obvious in recent years. His penchant for seeking out the big hit and taking himself completely out of the play has very much aggravated the Flames coaching staff for years. I hope for the Leafs sake, Phaneuf’s brand of truculence is much more toned down and controlled.

Mere child’s play. If Burke really wants to do something impressive he should turn Jeff Finger into Jordan Eberle and a first round draft pick.

If you told me 3 weeks ago

that Burke would trade Stajan, Blake, Hagman, Toskala, White, and Mayers and get an All-Star defenceman and a starting goalie (33 years old, career .913 SV%), I would be ecstatic. The Leafs got more in return than what they sent out.

Is Toskalol really gone? I’m still processing and laughing my head off. Second best line was what if Hiller gets hurt? They have to turn to Toskalol or Pogge. That is way way way too funny. Keep unloading the sludge Burkie. Great job.

The Phaneuf deal might turn out to be a steal. I sure hope so. I need a lot of time to process that and study who exactly we got outside of Dion. Been waiting for this all year long – seeing Burke all alone and furious after Toskalol blew the winner last night just made me wonder: when is that Mad Irishman gonna pull the trigger on some deadweight? I’m kind of making that comment (“not much worse”) in terms of like, if you were a fan of any team other than the leafs, and you looked at both line-ups (pre and post trades), you probably wouldn’t see much difference.

Yes, losing Stajan and Hagman up front is a loss, but it gives Bozak and Stalberg more ice, and allows us to acquire an offensive threat on the blue-line. Plus, what makes me happy about today is getting rid of Blake and Toskalol.

Now that I've had some time to digest all of this

I think the upside of Phaneuf and White will be a wash. I think the key to the deal is Aulie. If he develops into a shut down guy, we’re better off long term.

As for Giguere, I don’t expect anything major out of him. The Leafs will suck in front of him also, but he gives them a veteran presence and he can mentor Gustavsson which is good.

I’m glad that this opens up more ice time for the kids on the team.

Ian White is a year older than Phaneuf and is due for a big raise.

I don’t expect Phaneuf to be the next Lidstrom but he’s a better player than Ian White. If we needed to move spare parts (which we wanted gone anyways) to swap White for Phaneuf then it’s a done deal.

Burke wanted to bring in his guys and this let him do that big time. The only JFJ era Leafs on the squad are Poni and Kaberle.

OK. Brophy thinks Phaneuf and Kessel can be ’leaders’on this team. I don’t see that happening at all.

by Pyramid Power on Jan 31, 2010 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

Some thoughts about Phaneuf from Calgary

1 – He’s been a Sutter guy since his Red Deer years in junior.
2 – Daaaaarrryyyyyyll goes and signs Bouwmeester in the off-season. Is the writing on the wall hear?
3 – A sub-par season has fans and local media calling for him to be dealt.

Anyone else feel shitty for the guy, like the team totally gave up on him right when he’s entering his prime, because someone “better” just came along? He was their blueline anchor for the last 3 or 4 seasons and was everyone’s favourite here. Now they can’t get him out of town fast enough. Reminds me a bit of Caber, actually.

I would love to see him use this as ammo to re-focus and get his career back on track. He showed he could be a leader on the Flames, despite what Brophy says, and I would love to see that with the Leafs!

Final point, does Exelby give up his #3 or does Dion change it up and take Whitey’s #7 or something?

I want XLB to give it up, since he will be gone by March 3rd, though Phaneuf taking the #7 would be cool as well…. my fav defenseman would still be the same number!

Also, who else likes that we have a player on a nationally televised nike commercial (despite the irony that he didn’t end up making team Canada)?

Some words on Phaneuf's so called sub-par season

Last year Phaneuf was on the Flames #1 pairing, #1 PP unit, saw over 26 minutes of ice time a game, and was producing a point for every 40 minutes of ice time.

This year Phaneuf was put on the #2 pairing, #2 PP unit, sees an average of 23 minutes of ice time a game, and is producing a point for every 60 minutes of ice time. (Largely due to the diminished PP time)

If you want to blame someone for Phaneuf’s “sub-par” season, blame the Sutters.

Good news: Montreal fans are pissed

I think this is good. The complaint is: hey Bob Gainey, this is how a real GM works. So that must be good.

My take: The goalie trade is a big win, hands down. Even if Giguere plays as well as he’s been this season (ie not that great) he is still better than Toskala. Blake’s contract is gone—this is good. As a player he was fine, but easily replaceable.

The offence issue is not such a big deal. Most NHL players can score, given the minutes (e.g. Domenic Moore). So I’m sure that if Stempniak gets moved up, he scores a few more. Give Stalberg the chance and he’ll score. Bozak also has the skill. Mitchell has the potential to pick up the slack from Stajan, until Grabbo gets back. Scoring is not our problem. Plus it sounds like Burke is going to pick up some offensive depth with one more trade.

I’m not sure when he’s due back. Was said to miss six weeks with the busted wrist. I just hope he can start playing and more importantly producing half as well as he did last year. Imo he has been a HUGE disappointment this year. Montreal friends been rubbing it in re him all year long. Got his contract and he would disappear was the common refrain. Ugh.

Hey, more questions from an ignorant Caps fan:

  • What do the Leafs’ lines and pairings project out to for next year, assuming no more moves? I assume y’all expect Nazem Kadri to break the lineup. Stempniak, Ponikarovsky, Primeau and Wallin are all UFAs — do you want any of them back?
  • I keep hearing mentions of this guy named Tim Brent. Who the fuck is he?
    Cheers

by Gould Old Days on Jan 31, 2010 10:14 PM EST reply actions

If Kadri breaks the lineup either he’s turned into a superhuman player or we’re boned. We’re all excited to see Kadri but most of us think he needs at least a year in the AHL to develop.

Don’t care about Wallin, he’s been invisible. Depending on the cap hit, and assuming they don’t bring back a great return in a trade, I’d be OK with the other three coming back. Stempy and Poni can score (which after these trades we don’t have a ton of) and Primeau is a decent 3rd liner/PK guy.

Tim Brent is on our AHL team, the Marlies. He was a piece in another trade, no one seemed to know much about him. Thus the “Who the fuck is Tim Brent?” meme was born!
