Leafs Go Trade Crazy - The Media Reaction

Just as I was posting the FTB earlier this afternoon, I saw something in my Twitter feed, to wit:

Source tells me "major changes" coming today for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Via DarrenDreger on Twitter, Sun 31 Jan 13:53

And my first thought was, 'Eff me, they're going to sack Wilson'. Oh ye (well, ME) of little faith....

Something enormous is about to go down. Working on it

Via DarrenDreger on Twitter, Sun 31 Jan 16:08

But what could the sharp harp have in store for us?

Star-divide

First of all came the block buster. Matt Stajan, Ian White, Nik Hagman and Jamal Mayers for Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie. Let's take a look at what the fourth estate are saying about this doozy.

Your first thought, upon hearing the news that the Calgary Flames traded Dion Phaneuf to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a blockbuster seven-player trade, was probably the same as mine: When did Flames general manager Darryl Sutter start channeling one of his greatly unlamented predecessors, Doug Risebrough?

As anyone who’s watched him play this year realizes, Phaneuf remains a decided work in progress...A succession of coaches has tried to play Phaneuf with a succession of partners, with limited success...Still, the operative point about Phaneuf is that he was a Calder trophy contender; was a Norris trophy contender and theoretically could be that again. Who, among the players coming Calgary’s way, fits that bill?

Eric Duhatschek, Globe and Mail

Great! Strike up the band! Break out the tickertape! But wait....

On one hand Burke appears to have brightened his team's future by bringing to town a young defenceman with a solid track record and massive potential. The flip side is Burke has invested heavily in two young players, Phil Kessel and Phaneuf, neither of whom has a reputation for being leaders. To build a team around these two represents a huge risk. Burke had better be sure he adds veteran leadership to his group moving forward.

Mike Brophy, Sportsnet.ca

Of course, it's wasn't just Phanuef heading east - what of the two other players heading our way, Sjostrom and Aulie?

Sjostrom is just baggage - he teases, but never pleases. Aulie is a huge 6-6 defenseman who will add size and strength to the blue line in several years.

Darryl Dobbs, Dobber Hockey

Hmmm. Not unlike the Kessel trade, the jury is going to be out on this one for a good long while yet. I'm giving the last word on this one to Duhatschek:

Typically, any team that acquires a core player without giving up a comparable asset in return wins the deal hands down. Score this one heavily in Brian Burke’s favour.

Of course, the TNL brains trust weren't done for day at this point. Not by a long chalk. If, when you went to bed last night, someone whispered in your ear that Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake would no longer be suiting up in the Blue and White in less than 24 hours, you wouldn't have believed them - would you?

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for netminder Vesa Toskala and veteran forward Jason Blake.

The deal reunites Giguere with his long-time goaltending coach Francois Allaire, as well as former GM Brian Burke.

The most valuable player of the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs, Giguere needed to waive his no-trade clause in order for the deal to go through.

TSN

Rejoice, just rejoice at that news. You can even give TSN a pass for brutal misuse of the word 'netMINDER'

"Obviously I would have liked to stay in Anaheim," Giguere said. "When I re-signed here three years ago, I envisioned things going a little different. Saying that, I could see how they just signed re-signed Jonas, but even before that I could see that they were leaning toward Jonas.

"At 32 years old, I feel like I still have some hockey left in me. I wanted to try to get a chance to be a No. 1 goalie somewhere. I feel like in Anaheim that wasn’t going to happen. I’m glad that now I can get that chance again."

"We are pleased to add Jason and Vesa," Murray said. "Vesa will ge an opportunity to play behind Jonas Hiller and Jason brings veteran leadership and offense to our club."

The Orange County Register.

Bob Murray has a terrific career in satire just waiting for him if the hockey thing doesn't work out....but where there are arrivals, there must be departures. With Toskala, Blake and Mayers gone, who'll perform the vital role of scapegoat now? Step forward one plucky Swede...

In trading away wingers Hagman, Stajan and Mayers, the Leafs suddenly find themselves thin up front. Burke said the forward positions would be likely filled by players currently not in the lineup (Rickard Wallin and John Mitchell) as well as with youngsters in the minors (Viktor Stalberg and Christian Hanson).

Don't know about you folks, but I'm exhausted. No wonder Burkie looked haggard in those pressers earlier. Is he getting it done? It's too early to say, but at least SOMETHING is happening. Christ knows, we couldn't carry on like we had been.

"In one fell swoop, we've made ourselves the youngest team in the league," head coach Ron Wilson said. "Instead of looking back, we're looking forward."

Burke also said the roster shakeup for the worst team in the Eastern Conference probably isn't over.

"We're still open for business," Burke remarked. "We're not done."

TSN

Larry Brooks is reported the Leafs might be interested in trading for Ales Kotalik. Mentioned XLB possibly going the other way. Kotalik’s got 2 years at 3 mil per remaining on his contract. Thoughts?

That’s not that bad actually. Toronto still needs forward depth, so it makes sense. That being said, if XLB can bring a conditional mid-round draft pick, I’ll take the Leafs scouting brass to do their job.

That being said, the Rags seem to have interest in Exelby for some reason. Kotalik plus a draft pick for Exelby, since Kotalik would serve as their salary dump would be a trade I can swallow.

If that happens I would think Higgins makes more sense for Calgary. Flames still have a lot of D and don’t really need Gilroy even though he’s pretty good. As for the Rangers… seems like a big and needless gamble on a player with a big name but little production to back it up.

Anyway…. Hagman and Stajan were expendable. I’m glad we go Phaneuf out of the deal.

It’s interesting isn’t it? Burke builds from the defence out, and he likes big defencemen. It shouldn’t have been that surprising that he’d trade White for something. I’d have preferred picks, but them’s the breaks. Phaneuf seems like a nice addition.

I think people forget how great a player McCabe was for a few years: 4th in Norris voting, 2nd team all-star, Team Canada taxis squad, scored 50 goals over three seasons and was close to a PPG player in 2005-06.

I think Giguere is done. He’s put up bad numbers over two seasons now.

Hillier, playing behind the same team, has a sv% 16 points higher and a GAA that’s .4 lower than Giguere.

Next season, goalie gear gets downsized again, I can’t see that helping Giguere improve either.

Even with all of these knocks against him, he’s better than Toskala and gives the Leafs nominally better goaltending from their back-up.

if phaneuf projects no better than mccabe

then the leafs lose this, hard, because we’re going to be paying Phaneuf $6.5M (more than mccabe ever got) for 4+ more seasons.

I have a hard time seeing how Phaneuf can ever be a “value” at that contract but maybe. I’m encouraged by the fact that dmen peak a lot later. I mean, 10 years ago Chara was a throw-in in the Yashin deal.

Amazing thing from the national press

Is they are focussing on the Phaneuf trade as the great one for the Leafs and the Giggy deal as a side note.

If the Leafs dump Finger in the minors, resign RFAs Kulemin, Mitchell, Hanson and Mitchell at 10% raises, sign Gustavsson for $2MM and put someone like Mikjus in as #7D, they’ll have almost $8MM in cap space needing to sign only 2 forwards. This could be interesting.

That doesn’t include bonuses but Cap Geek doesn’t include them in calculating cap space.

if giguere’s even an average tender next year, that’s worth $4M at least, given how much goalies in this league make. still overpaid, but not as overpaid as a $4m 3rd-line plug like Blake.

add in the potential ‘mentoring’ of Gus and the fact that it’s only a 1-year contract, and i think it’s a pretty clear win.

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

by daoust on Jan 31, 2010 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

sorry, didn’t show math:

giguere earns $4m of $6M contract = $2M in lost value for the leafs.

blake earns $1M of $4M contract = $3M in lost value for the leafs.

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

by daoust on Jan 31, 2010 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Giguere hasn’t been an “average” goaltender for 2 years.

38th sv% in 2008-09 and 37th in 2009-10. Why would he be “avearage” next year?

Blake was a 25 goal scorer last year, good for 63 points. To sign a player in that point spectrum as a UFA it would cost about $4M.

I don’t see the value in Giguere, nor do I see Blake only being worth $1M.

If he had bounced back this year, he might get a mulligan, but he’s almost statistically identical.

And (broken record alert) goalie gear gets downsized again next year. Giguere has more gear than a GWAR show.

the leafs could find about 20 guys to play on the 3rd line for $1M and be as effective as blake has been this year.

and yes, blake was decent last year. if that’s relevant, than so is giggy’s .922 sv% 2 years ago.

he’s had problems with his kid, then his dad died, and he’s only been given a handful of starts this year. i have more reason to believe in giguere than i do in jason fucking blake.

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

by daoust on Jan 31, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Look, I’m no fan of Blake and I’m thrilled that he’s gone.

But to claim there are 20 guys available for a $1M that could replace him?

I’d love it if the Leafs could find a guy 2 to 3 guys on pace to net 17 goals for $1M.

And Giguere ain’t bouncing back. He’s put up a long string of bad numbers over two seasons, gear is getting smaller, and he’s about to play for the Leafs, who are always good for a .15 to .25 dip in sv%.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Jan 31, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

time will tell. but i feel marginally better about our goaltending than just having monster next year. we may have been able to sign a cheaper goalie who’s just as mediocre as giggy, but then we’d still have blake, too.

20 may have been hyperbole (ok, it was) but the role blake’s currently filling could be replaced with a much cheaper contract.

i think i’m just baffled that anyone could be negative about a trade that gets jason blake off the team.

First of all, how is Joey Mac any more than maybe a 0.01% upgrade over Toskala? He sucked when he was up.

Also, we have enough 2nd line guys who can score 20ish goals for a lot less than 4mil…

Sure, Giggy will hit us with 6mil next year, but writing him off as washed up is ridiculous. He’s not raycroft, who had ONE good year and sucked, this guy was a dominant goalie for several years. I’d take his 6mil cap hit for 1 year over Blakes 4mil for 2 years any day… not to mention we are now Toskalol free.

MacDonald cap hit: $0.95M

Sure, Giggy will hit us with 6mil next year, but writing him off as washed up is ridiculous.

That was an argument many made about Toskala.

Let’s look at Giguere’s tale-of-the-tape.
Over the past two seasons Giguere has posted the 38th and 37th best sv%.

He has 16 wins in his last 49 starts.

Next year equipment gets smaller.

He’s the 5th highest paid goalie in the NHL and all the arrows are pointing in the wrong direction.

that’s why it’s a good thing he’s off the books next year. We just need a semi-competant year of goaltending from him and mentorship for Gustavsson, and we’re OK. We couldn’t get either from Toskala, either for the rest of this season or next.

mf, I’m not trying to be a douche, I just think that you should give Giguere a chance. Honestly, he’s won a Con Smyth and a Cup. He’s been through a lot of personal problems, and he lost the goalie coach who make him who he is.

Maybe with Allaire, a new environment, and a team that allows less shots a game than the Ducks, he can do well. Either way, he is a veteran who can mentor the Monster and is an upgrade on Tosk AND/OR Joey Joe Joe.

Also, take into account the weak FA class this summer, and the 6mil cap hit we take next year is a good trade-off for the 4 mil we save in 11-12 by unloading blake.

That’s a strange salary dump.

Jokinen’s a pending UFA at $5.25M

Kotalik is $3M/yr through 2012.

Gilroy head a great start…

I’d do that deal just to land Gilroy. It’s not like Jokinen is going to net much at the trade deadline.

Exactly

So having the choice of Higgins makes no sense.

by lordosis on Jan 31, 2010 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

What I want to know is, how does replacing Jokinen with Kotalik and Gilroy/Higgins make the Flames better for the post season? Unless Sutter has already conceded the playoffs……

I’m guessing he already knows Jokinen isn’t built for the playoffs even if he got them there, but at least Kotalik has had some measure of success with the Oilers beforehand. And Gilroy has to be the prize. Higgins just doesn’t compare, right?

Either way, there seems to be a contest of oneupmanship out West on who can be worse over their tenure. Lowe set the bar real low, but Sutter is that underdog everyone is rooting for in the surprise disaster hit, “PS, I hate you Calgary Flames”

If Calgary had to deal with the Toronto media there would be a shitstorm of epic proportions.

The Flames gave up a first to get Jokinen and now it’s rumoured he’s heading out of town for Kotalik and Higgins? Yikes.

Ok, so the Flames would have lost Jokinen to free agency and been rid of his $5.25M contract. Instead they get Kotalik’s hit of $3M (which is terrible because he sucks) for the next two years and Higgins for the rest of the year at $2.25M.

Whereas the Rangers effectively free up $5.25M in cap space for this upcoming free agency.

How does this deal make any sense for the Flames? Why would Sutter agree to this?

Minutes breakdown in my mind

Phaneuf’s 27 or so: ES and PP
Komi 20 of so: ES and PK
Kaberle: 20 or so: ES and all the PP
Beauch: 20: ES, remainder of PP when Phaneuf comes off, PK
Schenn: 16.5: ES, PK
Gunnar, 16.5: ES, remaining PP and PK.

I like the French Connection of Beauch and Phaneuf. Beauch to play totally defensively like he did in Anaheim. Total stay at home d-man to make up for Dion’s mistakes which I hope will almost never happen.

That is exactly how I felt. Christmas came in July. Or in this case in February. “……who’ll perform the vital role of scapegoat now? Step forward some plucky Swede.” WAY too funny. It’s finally sunk in – Toskalol and Shake ’n Blake are gone forever. Thank you Brian Burke. You are a golden god. And Wallin will be gone in about 70 days.

Puns, Innuendo and Bad Spelling, Yes We Got That

by JaredFromLondon on Jan 31, 2010 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

true

but to get anything.. anything at all, for Toskala and Blake? It’s a miracle. Giguere’s got one more year on his contract, so he’s low risk. If he gets back into form, great. If not, he can be let go.

As for the Phaneuf deal:
-Mayers was worth nothing, so he’s expendable
-Stajan was a UFA so he’s expendable as a rental. He’s a 3rd line centre who can be replaced on the free agent market. He’s not good enough to fit into the top-six of the “top-six bottom-six model”.

So it’s really Phaneuf + defensive prospect for White and Hagman. Risky, yes. But Hagman wasn’t going to get any better. White, as I’ve said before, probably felt the “fan favourite” winds blowing his way and I feel he would have pushed for an embarassing 4.5 mil a year contract with a NTC. I’ve also felt he’s at the peak of his potential. Plus, he never fit into Burke’s Big Burly Befenseman (sorry) model of building a hockey team, whereas Phaneuf does (as does Noname Prospectman.)

The downside – now we REALLY have no scoring on this team. Hopefully those college kids develop.

Mirtle weighs in with fresh copy

His take on the numbers is here.

with 32 per cent of the cap dedicated to just Phaneuf, Giguere and Kessel next season, it’s going to be a tight squeeze to fit more top-six forwards into the mix

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Feb 1, 2010 12:12 AM EST reply actions

I think this can be debunked by the fact that the term “top-six forward” is really really ridiculous and stupid.

Moustache Fever, not to be confused with swine flu.

by Shield on Feb 1, 2010 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

I think you need to look at the big picture. The Leafs have about $13M to sign 10 players. $1.3M per player doesn’t get you much talent and it won’t get the Leafs very far.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Feb 1, 2010 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

But if you assume that maybe 4 or 5 of those guys will be rookies, making between 700 and 850k, you have a bit more than that for the other 5 or 6.

by Shield on Feb 1, 2010 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

Name four or five rookies the Leafs could conceivably roll out next year.

Don’t forget to include bonuses. Schenn makes nearly $3M when you fold those in. Bozak too.

Stefanovich, D’Amigo, Kadri. There are three. Also consider guys like Deveaux or Ondrus who can cheaply fill 4th line spots.

This is the scary part though

Moustache Fever, not to be confused with swine flu.

by Shield on Feb 1, 2010 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

No, Kabs and Finger gone frees up $7.25M in cap space. The Leafs are in tight though, there’s no doubt about it.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Feb 1, 2010 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

Stefanovich is a long-shot to make the NHL.

D’Amigo is a maybe.

Deveaux and Ondrus were spectacular failures at the NHL level.

Kadri’s cap hit is $1.75M – $450K higher than what the Leafs have per player.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Feb 1, 2010 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

All I’m saying is that yeah, so 10 guys at 1.3 per, but probably 3 of those make somewhere in the 750-900k range, meaning we have a bit more. And even then, we would probably sign a few guys around 1 or 1.3-4, leaving room for another “top six forward”

Plus, we will be without either Finger or Kaberle, freeing up another 3.5-4.5 mil

Moustache Fever, not to be confused with swine flu.

by Shield on Feb 1, 2010 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

Even if you can get six guys at $1M (and that’s a tough go) that leaves $7M for your final 4, or $1.75M each. Nowhere near enough.

The Leafs have to purge more salaries. Giguere eating up $6M is a heavy price to pay to be rid of Blake.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Feb 1, 2010 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

I totally agree

That we have to get rid of more salaries. Still, I stick to the idea that the 2 mil next year that we lose is worth the 4 mil we lose in 2011-12. And yeah, Phaneuf is a high price, but at least with him there is a chance of awesomeness.

Moustache Fever, not to be confused with swine flu.

by Shield on Feb 1, 2010 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

This could be Burke’s big chance to follow through on his threat. He won’t be burying Finger because he is punishing him but because he has to.

And Kaberle is gonzo. He has to be.

Dion and Gunnarsson

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Feb 1, 2010 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

But neither of those guys are really puck-moving d-men. Gunnarson is more of a defensive guy with an offensive upside (that’s nowhere near White or Kabbys) and Phaneuf is known for making bad first passes. The only guy we have right now who would be passable as our #1 mover (besides kabby obviously) is beach, which is sad.

So.

Stajan is on his way to a tryout as a number one centre out in Calgary with one of the best wingers in the game. If he racks up a point-per-game season, I’ll know why, but it’ll still piss me off. “Oh Stajan has just blossomed under the wing of Iggy” they’ll say. NO. He is Rico Fata, bouncing goals in off his ass, skating next to Jarome Iginla.

Should have made that clearer.

Rico Fata, for those who don’t remember, played with Lemieux, and probably stayed in the league a whole lot longer than anyone expected because he mysteriously found his game skating next to 66 for a brief period of time.

It’s a beautiful day, don’t let it get away. Intense partying. I can’t stop laughing and chuckling and chortling. BB – you are Da Man! Don’t stop now. Finger? Exelby? Keep on mowin’ em down. Blow this team up.

Keep Poni. Find a way to keep Kaberle. Counting down the 70 days ‘til Wallin is gone to Stockholm. Mitchell, meh. Beauch, Komi, Dion, Schenn, Gunner, Kess, Bozak, Stalberg, Rosehill (I love that man, not always sure why), Orr, Primeau, Gusty, Gettin’ Giggy with It.

And bring up Hanson and let us find out if he can skate and play with the big boys for the rest of this year. We had him up for five games last year – let’s see what he can do now. Let him get a few games in before the Olympic break and sit Wallin forever. I truly hope Rickard never has to play for us again, but I know that is probably wishful thinking. It’s all too beautiful.

I see Giggy and Phaneuf totally motivated and ready to roll and be all they can be – again.

Resurrection for Giggy.

Vindication and vengeance for Phaneuf.

They are going to be two VERY highly motivated dudes! I’d still like Gusty to start most of the games here on in to get a better picture of how he has progressed, but with a healthy helping of Giggy as needed.

I believe in this team again. Thank you Brian Burke!
